Screwtape Proposes a Toast

release date: Dec 06, 2023
Screwtape Proposes a Toast
"Screwtape Proposes a Toast" by C.S. Lewis is a satirical and thought-provoking work that serves as an addendum to Lewis''s earlier masterpiece, "The Screwtape Letters." In this sequel, Lewis revisits the demonic bureaucracy of Hell, presenting the senior demon Screwtape delivering a toast to a group of graduating demons. Through this imaginative and allegorical narrative, Lewis explores themes of human weakness, societal trends, and the subtle ways in which evil can infiltrate everyday life. Screwtape''s toast becomes a darkly humorous commentary on the dangers of contemporary ideologies, societal norms, and the erosion of traditional values. This brief yet impactful work offers readers a satirical lens through which to examine the complexities of human behavior and the ever-present temptations that may lead individuals away from a virtuous path. "Screwtape Proposes a Toast" showcases Lewis''s keen wit and insightful observations, inviting readers to reflect on the moral challenges of their own time and consider the timeless principles that shape human character.

The C.S. Lewis Science Fiction MEGAPACK®
Clive Staples Lewis (1898–1963) was a British novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, literary critic, essayist, lay theologian, broadcaster, lecturer, and Christian apologist. He held academic positions at both Oxford University (Magdalen College, 1925–1954) and Cambridge University (Magdalene College, 1954–1963). He is best known for his works of fiction, especially The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Space Trilogy, and for his non-fiction Christian apologetics, such as Mere Christianity, Miracles, and The Problem of Pain. Lewis and fellow novelist J. R. R. Tolkien were close friends. They both served on the English faculty at Oxford University, and were active in the informal Oxford literary group known as the Inklings. According to Lewis''s memoir Surprised by Joy, he was baptised in the Church of Ireland, but fell away from his faith during adolescence. Lewis returned to Anglicanism at the age of 32, owing to the influence of Tolkien and other friends, and he became an “ordinary layman of the Church of England.” Lewis''s faith profoundly affected his work, and his wartime radio broadcasts on the subject of Christianity brought him wide acclaim. Lewis wrote more than 30 books, which have been translated into more than 30 languages and have sold millions of copies. The books that make up The Chronicles of Narnia have sold the most and have been popularised on stage, TV, radio, and cinema. His philosophical writings are widely cited by Christian apologists from many denominations. This volume collects C.S. Lewis’s classic “Space Trilogy,” consisting of Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength. Perelandra
Written during the dark hours immediately before and during the Second World War, C. S. Lewis''s Space Trilogy, of which Perelandra is the second volume, stands alongside such works as Albert Camus''s The Plague and George Orwell''s 1984 as a timely parable that has become timeless, beloved by succeeding generations as much for the sheer wonder of its storytelling as for the significance of the moral concerns. For the trilogy''s central figure, C. S. Lewis created perhaps the most memorable character of his career, the brilliant, clear-eyed, and fiercely brave philologist Dr. Elwin Ransom. Appropriately, Lewis modeled Dr. Ransom after his dear friend J. R. R. Tolkien, for in the scope of its imaginative achievement and the totality of its vision of not one but two imaginary worlds, the Space Trilogy is rivaled in this century only by Tolkien''s trilogy The Lord of the Rings. Readers who fall in love with Lewis''s fantasy series The Chronicles of Namia as children unfailingly cherish his Space Trilogy as adults; it, too, brings to life strange and magical realms in which epic battles are fought between the forces of light and those of darkness. But in the many layers of its allegory, and the sophistication and piercing brilliance of its insights into the human condition, it occupies a place among the English language''s most extraordinary works for any age, and for all time. In Perelandra, Dr. Ransom is recruited by the denizens of Malacandra, befriended in Out of the Silent Planet, to rescue the edenic planet Perelandra and its peace-loving populace from a terrible threat: a malevolent being from another world who strives to create a new world order, and who must destroy an old and beautiful civilization to do so.
