release date: Jan 01, 2001
Personal Characteristics of Successful Co-parents Post-divorce
The purpose of the present phenomenological study was to identify and describe the personal characteristics of parents who successfully co-parent after divorce. A convenient sample, from a small midwestern community, consisting of 20 divorced individuals (10 ex-couples) who had been legally divorced for more than 12 months and who had never returned to court on parenting issues were selected as co-researchers. Six sociodemographic and six open ended questions were asked during a single structured interview. Co-researchers, were asked to describe personal characteristics of themselves and their ex-spouse related to the co-parenting process. Co-researchers identified six themes that emerged as personal characteristics: focused on parenting, accepting, high self-esteem, considerate, cooperative, and being observant. Results suggest that personal characteristics play a significant role in developing and maintaining a successful post-divorce co-parenting relationship. Implications for professionals and suggestions for further research are discussed.
