The Canon of the New Testament

release date: Mar 06, 1997
The Canon of the New Testament
This book provides information from Church history concerning the recognition of the canonical status of the several books of the New Testament. Canonization was a long and gradual process of sifting among scores of gospels, epistles, and other books that enjoyed local and temporary authority - some of which have only recently come to light among the discoveries of Nag Hammadi. After discussing the external pressures that led to the fixing of the limits of the canon, the author gives sustained attention to Patristic evidence that bears on the development of the canon not only in the West but also among the Eastern Churches, including the Syrian, Armenian, Georgian, Coptic, and Ethiopian. Besides considering differences as to the sequence of the books in the New Testament, Dr Metzger takes up such questions as which form of text is to be regarded as canonical; whether the canon is open or closed; to what extent a canon should be sought within the canon; and whether the canon is a collection of authoritative books or an authoritative collection of books.

Reminiscences of an Octogenarian
Bruce Manning Metzger''s memoirs trace his life from his childhood in the Pennsylvania Dutch country and his student years at Princeton through his distinguished career of teaching, writing, lecturing, and editing. Professor Metzger''s work has won him the gratitude of both biblical scholars and the larger Bible-reading public. His text-critical work on the New Testament is reflected in the standard Greek text now used and appreciated by scholars worldwide. His efforts on the Revised Standard and New Revised Standard versions of the Bible helped produce the readable, accurate English translations used for study and devotion by so many. His work on The Reader''s Digest Bible and The Oxford Companion to the Bible has made the Bible more accessible for an untold number of readers. In these memoirs, Professor Metzger''s own words put a human face on his monumental scholarly achievements. The wide array of stories and vignettes--from Senator Joseph McCarthy''s attack on RSV committee members and Metzger''s audiences with the pope to the time Professor Metzger and other members of the NRSV committee had to crawl out of a library window to get to their dinner--offer the reader a personal insight into some of the twentieth century''s crucial developments in the text and translation of the Bible.

Outlined here is the development of biblical translation, including a careful analysis of more than fifty versions of the Bible. One of the most respected living biblical scholars, Bruce Metzger begins this engaging survey with the earliest translations of the Old and New Testaments before proceeding to English versions dating from the eleventh century to the present. Metzger explores the circumstances under which each translation was produced and offers insight into its underlying objectives, characteristics, and strengths. Having served on a number of modern translation committees, his insights into the evolution of Bible translation flow not only from careful research, but also from personal experience. Students, pastors, and interested readers will discover the history of the written Word and gain useful insight into which modern translations best serve their own needs.

Apostolic Letters of Faith, Hope, and Love

release date: Oct 15, 2006
Apostolic Letters of Faith, Hope, and Love
Professor Metzger has been a leader in New Testament studies for the past fifty years, through his teaching, his publications, his text-critical work, and his translation work. This volume brings his deep insight to three key epistles, focusing on three fundamental Christian virtues. The following pages set forth the teaching from three of the twenty-one letters contained in the New Testament: Galatians, 1 Peter, and 1 John. Each letter presents characteristic emphases of three prominent leaders in the early church: Paul, Peter, and John. Each letter arises out of quite different social and theological backgrounds, and each provides insight into the manner in which the special needs of the recipients of the letter were met. Key words and phrases from each letter are discussed within the context of the occasion that called forth the writing of the letter. At the same time the theological and devotional import of the writer''s teaching is related to the Christian life, then and now. A concluding chapter weaves together theological and ethical themes common to the three principal strands of New Testament Christianity. Faith puts us on the path; hope keeps us walking; and love is what the Christian life is all about. --from the Preface
