The Lobster's Tale

release date: Oct 07, 2021
The Lobster's Tale
Exploring the lobster''s biology and its history in language, literature and gastronomy, The Lobster''s Tale navigates the perils of a life driven by overreaching ambition and the appetite for knowledge, conquest and commerce. In conversation with the text, Bruce Foster''s photographs navigate a parallel course of shadows and light, in which the extraordinary textures and colours of the natural world tell a darker story. The Lobster''s Tale is a meditation on the quest for immortality on which both artists and scientists have embarked, and the unhappy consequences of the attempt to both conquer nature and create masterpieces. Meanwhile, below the waterline of text and images, a modest voice can be overheard whispering an alternative to these narratives of heroic and doomed exploration. The Lobster''s Tale brings together award-winning writer Chris Price and distinguished photographer Bruce Foster. It is the third in the korero series of ''picture books'' edited by Lloyd Jones, written and made for grown-ups and designed to showcase leading New Zealand writers and artists working together in a collaborative and dynamic way.

Citizen of Santiago

release date: Jan 01, 2013
Citizen of Santiago
Between March and May 2013, photographer Bruce Foster and poet Gregory O''Brein were temporary citizens of Santiago de Chile, staying in an apartment a short walk from the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, where their works were included in the ''Kermadec - Art Across the Pacific'' exhibition. Camera in hand, Foster walked the streets of this ambiguous yet curiously animated city, with its buskers, military parades, stray dogs and cascades of water from the cannons of armoured vehicles; O''Brien wrote poems, seated at Cafe Sur or the Mosqueto (with its Fernando Pessoa placemats), or on a bench in the Parque Forestal. Together they observed the life of street, park, and busy intersection; they were drawn into the generous, abundant lives of their fellow citizens.

Chemical Admixtures

Chemical Admixtures
Although concrete admixtures are chemicals in a literal sense, by convention in concrete technology, the term "chemical admixture" is restricted to water-soluble substances other than air-entraining agents. Most chemical admixtures react chemically with the cement in concrete. This discussion will be confined to set-controlling and water-reducing admixtures. Chemical admixtures of other types are classified and described in a recent report of the American Concrete Inst. [1]. A water-reducing admixture is defined as one that reduces the quantity of mixing water required to produce concrete of a given consistency; a retarding admixture as one that retards the setting of concrete; an accelerating admixture as one that accelerates the setting and early strength development of concrete; a water-reducing and retarding admixture as one that reduces the quantity of mixing water required to produce concrete of a given consistency and retards the setting of concrete; and a water-reducing and accelerating admixture as one that reduces the quantity of mixing water required to produce concrete of a given consistency and accelerates the setting and early strength development of concrete. These five types of admixtures are referred to in ASTM Specifications for Chemical Admixtures for Concrete (C 494 - 63 T) as Types A, B, C, D, and E, respectively.
