A Message for Its Own Time

release date: May 19, 2023
A Message for Its Own Time
This book is written for Catholics and fellow Christians seeking a vision of the Church which inspires great hope in these challenging times. The Church is God''s process of healing and developing humanity. Father Brian Murphy highlights its history of change and development, and suggests how the present trials are intense preparation for the future. God has led us into the desert where all true renewal begins, in order to be prepared for a wonderful new spring. Each of us needs to become more deeply ''the type of worshiper the Father wants'': that is to ''worship in truth'' by rediscovering the treasures of the faith, and to ''worship in spirit'' through contemplation, the prayer of the heart (John 4:24). Then the Church will be more effectively empowered to continue its mission to baptise all people into the life of the Trinity, and to renew the face of the earth. In the last part of the book Anne Bardell stresses the need for Adult faith formation, giving many practical examples. She discovered that most Catholics seem content with their level of faith knowledge. However, once introduced to the deeper riches of the history and truths of the faith, people were eager to know more as their thirst for faith formation grew. She argues for the essential need for centres or hubs of faith formation in every parish. It is essential that practising Catholics are encouraged to access these hubs as a normal part of parish life. They should also be accessible to parents leading their children through the Sacraments of Initiation. This requires the training of leaders equipped to support people as they travel ever deeper into their relationship with Jesus.

Foreign Disinformation in America and the U.S. Government’s Ethical Obligations to Respond

release date: Apr 18, 2023
Foreign Disinformation in America and the U.S. Government’s Ethical Obligations to Respond
The U.S. no longer has a free marketplace of ideas. Instead, the marketplace is saturated with covert foreign-backed disinformation. And despite the ethical obligations to act, successive administrations have done nothing. Additionally, the decline in trust has left the door open for populism and illiberalism to enter. Some believe the very fabric of American liberalism is at stake. So what are the ethical responsibilities of the executive branch to counter covert campaigns such as the one coming from Russian-backed disinformation circulating within the US? Why has the government failed to act? So far, the practical challenges are daunting if the executive branch addresses the threat to the homeland. The process to limit this problem is wrought with profound political implications. By its very nature, social media-based disinformation is inextricably linked with existing complex societal cleavages, the First Amendment, and politics. But the failure to do anything is a serious abdication of the government’s ethical responsibilities. This raises the question of where the line is for government intervention. This work provides answers.

KING KONG SUDOKU: A TRUE BEAST OF A PUZZLE, IN LIVING COLOR!

release date: Dec 20, 2022
KING KONG SUDOKU: A TRUE BEAST OF A PUZZLE, IN LIVING COLOR!
Do you REALLY like to play Sudoku puzzles? Are you the type of puzzler who loves the 16×16 and 25×25 grids, and also likes variety Sudokus, but has little interest in “boring” standard 9×9s? Well, great news! Here’s a humongous 100×100 Sudoku, with diagonals, and here’s the best part: This one is in color! No more bothering with those tiny black-and-white grids! With this book, you can go much, much further than that and create a much larger grid size, by cutting pages out and pasting or taping them together to form a 100×100 Sudoku. And what’s more, each of the 100 individual 10×10 squares are subdivided into four 5×5 squares with different colors: red, yellow, green, and blue, along with gray squares indicating the diagonals. The gray squares along the long diagonals each contain the numbers 0 to 99. In addition, each color set has its own 25 different numbers from 0 to 99, which will be consistent throughout the entire grid, which you can deduce via crossing out numbers used on other color squares, using the scratch pads provided. As a result, when you combine any four 5×5 squares with the four different colors – whether those four 5×5 squares be in a 10×10 cage, all aligned in a row, in a column, or even on a long diagonal, as well as each set of “four corners” from the outermost corners of the grid to the centermost, or just in random, disparate places – they will end up containing all of the numbers from 0 to 99. How cool is that!

28: A Photographic Tribute to Buster Posey

release date: Aug 30, 2022
28: A Photographic Tribute to Buster Posey
Packed with over 150 color photos, 28: A Photographic Tribute to Buster Posey captures the catcher’s entire career, from the first time he stepped foot onto the field for the San Francisco Giants back in 2009 all the way to his final at-bat in 2021. Longtime sports photographer Brad Mangin teams up with Buster Posey himself in this visual celebration of the star catcher’s 12 seasons with the San Francisco Giants. One of the most beloved players in Giants history, the rookie catcher helped carry the franchise to its first World Series in San Francisco in 2010, and from there, the rising star carried the Giants to win two more World Series in 2012 and 2014—all brilliantly documented by Mangin. With an introduction from veteran sportswriter and San Francisco radio host Brian Murphy, along with essays from Buster and his teammates, managers, and other sports luminaries—including Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper, Bruce Bochy, Matt Cain, Brandon Crawford, Gabe Kapler, Hunter Pence, Sergio Romo, Logan Webb, and Barry Zito—28 tells the story of Buster’s illustrious career from the heartfelt perspective of those who know him best. Off the field, Buster used his platform to help children, and now his legacy continues to transform lives. He and his wife, Kristen, created and nurtured BP28, a charity that has raised over $4 million since 2016 in its endeavor to improve outcomes and raise awareness of pediatric cancer. Kristen also shares that story here, and a portion of the proceeds from this book will benefit their foundation.

Beyond Sfooustenance

release date: Jan 01, 2022
Beyond Sfooustenance
«An important contribution to understanding our culinary journey in Ireland from a time when food was regarded merely as sustenance. As a nation, we have grown in confidence. Up to relatively recently in Ireland, we had a serious inferiority complex and not just about our food and food culture. Brian documents through various prisms the growing pride in our tradition, the quality of our produce and the growing skills of our chefs. At last, we appreciate what we have here in Ireland and serve our Irish food proudly.» (Darina Allen, Ballymaloe Cookery School) Through concepts such as place and story, this work considers the cultural importance of the foods we eat and the drinks we imbibe in Irish society. While providing us with the necessary sustenance to survive, they also have something to say in terms of how we relate to each other and the world around us. The book examines the products we associate with gastronomy in Ireland and the uniquely Irish places in which they are consumed. Places considered include the Irish pub, the traditional Irish butcher shop and the Irish whiskey distillery. Both products and places are explored through the lens of terroir, experience and the impact of Third Place and Fourth Space paradigms. Though much of what is discussed here is anchored in the past, the book also examines how that past has impacted on more contemporary phenomena such as Irish café culture and social gastronomy. While the work is primarily focused on Ireland, it draws insights from lessons learned in countries like France that possess a widely renowned gastronomic legacy. In addition to the obvious food connections, the chapters in this work are all linked by a common thread of personal engagement that stems from a lifetime spent working in and around the food and drink sector.

Understanding Soils in Urban Environments

release date: Nov 01, 2021
Understanding Soils in Urban Environments
With an ever-increasing proportion of the world’s population living in cities, soil properties such as salinity, acidity, water retention, erosion and pollution are becoming more significant in urban areas. While these are known issues for agriculture and forestry, as urban development increases, it is essential to recognise the potential of soil properties to create problems for the environment as well as structural concerns for buildings and other engineering works. Understanding Soils in Urban Environments explains how urban soils develop, change and erode. It describes their physical and chemical properties with a focus on specific soil problems that cause environmental damage, such as acid sulfate soils, and also affect the integrity of engineering structural works. This fully revised second edition addresses contemporary issues, including an increase in the use of green roofs and urban green space as well as manufactured soils in a variety of urban environments. Understanding Soils in Urban Environments provides a concise introduction to all aspects of soils in urban environments and will be extremely useful to students in a wide range of disciplines, from soil science and urban forestry and horticulture, to planning, engineering, construction and land remediation, as well as to engineers, builders, landscape architects, ecologists, planners and developers.

Remember Who You Are

release date: Jul 13, 2021
Remember Who You Are
Pedro Gomez of ESPN was a beloved figure in the world of baseball and his death from sudden cardiac arrest on Feb. 7, 2021, unleashed an outpouring of heartfelt tributes. He was 58, both a hard-nosed reporter and a smiling ambassador of the sport. These 62 personal essays soar beyond sports to delve into life lessons. Pedro, a proud Cuban American, was known for his dramatic reporting from Havana. Fully and fluidly bilingual, he did as much as anyone to bridge the wide gap that had existed between U.S.-born players and the Latin Americans now so important to the game''s vitality and future growth. He was also a family man who loved to talk about his three children, Sierra, Dante and Rio, a Boston Red Sox prospect.Pedro was universally known as a smiling presence who brought out the best in people. His humanity and generosity of spirit shaped countless lives, including one of his ESPN bosses, Rob King, who was so moved by Pedro''s advice to him--"Remember who you are"--that he printed up the words and posted them on the wall of his office in Bristol. King is one of a diverse collection of contributors whose personal essays turn Pedro''s shocking death into an occasion to reflect on the deeper truths of life we too often overlook. Part The Pride of Havana and part Tuesdays With Morrie, part The Tender Bar and part Ball Four, this is the rare essay collection that reads like a novel, full of achingly honest emotion and painful insights, a book about friendship, a book about standing for something, a book about joy and love. Former New York Times writer Jack Curry writes about Pedro''s passion for live music, and former Sports Illustrated writer Tim Kurkjian brings alive spring-training basketball games with executives like Sandy Anderson and Billy Beane and Pedro right in the mix. Detroit manager AJ Hinch and formers Texas manager Ron Washington both reveal that in their darkest hours Pedro gave them some of the best advice of their lives. Hall of Famers Dennis Eckersley, Tony La Russa, Peter Gammons, Ross Newhan, Tracy Ringolsby and Dan Shaughnessy are among the contributors. So are likely future Hall of Famers Max Scherzer and Dusty Baker. Pulitzer-Prize-winning Washington Post war correspondent Steve Fainaru, award-winning writers from Howard Bryant and Mike Barnicle to Tim Keown, Ken Rosenthal and Dave Sheinin also contribute. Rounding out the mix are current and former ESPN stars including Rachel Nichols, Shelley M. Smith, Peter Gammons, Bob Ley and Keith Olbermann. This is a book to rekindle in any lapsed fan a love of going to the ballpark, but it''s also a wakeup call that transcends sports. To any journalist, worn down by the demands of a punishing job, to anyone anywhere, pummeled by pandemic times and the dark mood of the country in recent years, these essays will light a spark to seize every opportunity to make a difference, in your work and in the lives of people who matter to you.

Flame and Crimson: A History of Sword-and-Sorcery

release date: Jan 01, 2020
Flame and Crimson: A History of Sword-and-Sorcery
The Many Children of Conan Little did then-obscure Texas writer Robert E. Howard know that with the 1929 publication of "The Shadow Kingdom" in the pulp magazine Weird Tales, he had given birth to a new and vibrant subgenre of fantasy fiction. Sword-and-sorcery went from pulp obscurity to mass-market paperback popularity before suffering a spectacular publishing collapse in the 1980s. But it lives on in the broader culture and today enjoys a second life in popular role-playing games, music, and films, and helped give birth to a new literary subgenre known as grimdark, popularized by the likes of George R.R. Martin''s A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy series. Flame and Crimson: A History of Sword-and-Sorcery provides much-needed definitions and critical rigor to this misunderstood fantasy subgenre. It traces its origins in the likes of historical fiction, to its birth in the pages of Weird Tales, to its flowering in the Frank Frazetta-illustrated Lancer Conan Saga series in the 1960s. It covers its "barbarian bust" beneath a heap of second-rate pastiche, a pack of colorful and wildly entertaining and awful sword-and-sorcery films, and popular culture second life in the likes of Dungeons & Dragons and the bombast of heavy metal music.

A Pilgrim’s Path

release date: Nov 09, 2018
A Pilgrim’s Path
This book of poetry was inspired by three life-changing experiences: a year as a medical platoon leader in Vietnam, as an international medical volunteer, and finally, as a pilgrim on a thirty-seven-day pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago. The last of these moved me to try to describe in verse how these disparate experiences influenced my spiritual life and to share it with fellow pilgrims.

Adrift

Adrift
A story of tragedy at sea where every desperate act meant life or death The small ship making the Liverpool-to-New York trip in the early months of 1856 carried mail, crates of dry goods, and more than one hundred passengers, mostly Irish emigrants. Suddenly an iceberg tore the ship asunder and five lifeboats were lowered. As four lifeboats drifted into the fog and icy water, never to be heard from again, the last boat wrenched away from the sinking ship with a few blankets, some water and biscuits, and thirteen souls. Only one would survive. This is his story. As they started their nine days adrift more than four hundred miles off Newfoundland, the castaways--an Irish couple and their two boys, an English woman and her daughter, newlyweds from Ireland, and several crewmen, including Thomas W. Nye from Fairhaven, Massachusetts--began fighting over food and water. One by one, though, day by day, they died. Some from exposure, others from madness and panic. In the end, only Nye and the ship''s log survived. Using Nye''s firsthand descriptions and later newspaper accounts, ship''s logs, assorted diaries, and family archives, Brian Murphy chronicles the horrific nine days that thirteen people suffered adrift on the cold gray Atlantic. Adrift brings readers to the edge of human limits, where every frantic decision and desperate act is a potential life saver or life taker.

Tennessee River and Northwest Alabama

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Tennessee River and Northwest Alabama
This pictorial history illustrates the Tennessee River''s influence on Northwest Alabama and people, places, and events that have shaped the area''s cultural and natural history. For centuries, the Tennessee River has shaped the lives of northwest Alabamians. Native peoples made their homes on its shores, living on the rich resources found in its waters and on its banks. Early Europeans and Americans recognized the river''s importance in connecting east with west, although traveling the 40-mile stretch of rocky shoals between present-day Decatur and Florence was difficult. Overcoming that navigation challenge led to such 19th-century technological advances as the Tuscumbia, Courtland & Decatur Railroad--the first rail line west of the Appalachian Mountains--and the Muscle Shoals Canal. During the Civil War, skirmishes over control of factories, rail lines, and bridges characterized most military activity in northwest Alabama. In the 20th century, the construction of Wilson Dam and the creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority improved the quality of life and increased economic opportunities in northwest Alabama.

Forgotten Patriot

release date: Sep 01, 2016
Forgotten Patriot
It had been a busy few days for Adolf Hitler, but Douglas Hyde had not slipped his mind ... On 25 June 1938, Douglas Hyde became the first President of Ireland. His values stood in stark contrast to those of the continental dictator. As a Protestant nationalist and a leading figure in the language revival, he made the office an inclusive one and determined to be a president for all the people of Ireland. He also played a highly significant, but previously unheralded, role in the state''s policy of neutrality during the Second World War. Hitler''s fleeting fixation with Hyde was that the new presidency significantly diluted Ireland''s bonds with the British Empire. The accepted wisdom is that Hyde''s transition to the presidency was a seamless process, but new research shows it only came about on foot of a late political compromise. He may have been a compromise candidate, but with his non-partisan background, he was also an inspired choice. Forgotten Patriot shows Hyde''s considerable impact on the development and perception of the office of President of Ireland.
