This volume is presented as a tribute to "two icons from the world of optics"--in the words of editors Harvey (Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers, U. of Central Florida) and Hooker (electrical and computer and engineering, U. of Colorado)--both of whom have been affiliated with the Optical Sciences Center at the U. of Arizona. Twenty-one papers from a tribute conference, some highly technical and others more personal, detail the honorees contributions to optics and optics education. These are followed by 45 journal article reprints authored by Bob Shannon and Roland Shack or their students in the technical areas of optical design and analysis, image evaluation, applications of the marginal ray height--chief ray height diagram, optical testing, optical fabrication, phased telescope arrays, aberration theory, propagation effects in the atmosphere, and diffraction/surface scatter phenomena. A catalogue and general review of early New Zealand printed maps, published up to the middle of the 1840s.

Recent interest in the use of synthetic aperture optical systems for astronomical and reconnaissance applications prompted this study. The imaging characteristics of a synthetic aperture system consisting of six circular elements positioned on a circle were determined for the case when piston error, tilt, defocus, spherical aberration, astigmatism or coma was introduced into one element of the array. In addition, system defocus was introduced across all elements of the array. The effects of the aberrations on the optical wavefront, the point spread function, and the image of an extended object were determined. The optical transfer function was calculated by a digital computer for the case of small aberrations and was measured experimentally for the case of large aberrations. Synthetic aperture systems produce imagery having an unconventional appearance which is accentuated by aberrations. Special demands are placed on the photointerpreter and on photointerpretation equipment from degrading already low contrast imagery.
