Scribe

release date: Oct 07, 2014
Scribe
Ever since he joined the sports department of the Boston Globe in 1968, sports enthusiasts have been blessed with the writing and reporting of Bob Ryan. Tony Kornheiser calls him the “quintessential American sportswriter.” For the past twenty-five years, he has also been a regular on various ESPN shows, especially The Sports Reporters, spreading his knowledge and enthusiasm for sports of all kinds. Born in 1946 in Trenton, New Jersey, Ryan cut his teeth going with his father to the Polo Grounds and Connie Mack Stadium, and to college basketball games at the Palestra in Philadelphia when it was the epicenter of the college game. As a young man, he became sports editor of his high school paper-and at age twenty-three, a year into his Boston Globe experience, he was handed the Boston Celtics beat as the Bill Russell era ended and the Dave Cowens one began. His all-star career was launched. Ever since, his insight as a reporter and skills as a writer have been matched by an ability to connect with people-players, management, the reading public-probably because, at heart, he has always been as much a fan as a reporter. More than anything, Scribe reveals the people behind the stories, as only Bob Ryan can, from the NBA to eleven Olympics to his surprising favorite sport to cover-golf-and much more It is sure to be one of the most talked-about sports books of 2014, by one of the sports world''s most admired journalists.

Back to the Stone Age

Back to the Stone Age
This book is written under the impression that God is raising up an army of men to be Spiritual Warriors. These men do not need a stage or a position. They may be pipe-fitters or professionals; they may landscapers or lawyers. They are being drawn by the Holy Spirit to engage personally and collectively. As Men of Fire who make a difference, they are defined by what they do. This book asserts that men need to recapture their passions for “building, breaking, providing and protecting” in their homes, churches, and community. Men are ready to gather at fires as they define themselves through stories. Retelling life experiences at campfires, BBQ pits, and bonfires expose a man’s passions and announce readiness to address life as Men of Fire. Stories need a safe place to surface the passions that have been surrendered to television warriors and superheroes consigning themselves as the “keeper of the remote.” From emerging young men sitting at the feet of fathers and spiritual warriors, to men who have been told to sit down and be quiet, God is raising up Men of Fire today to face God’s challenges as spiritual warriors that face life with courage and commitment.

The Rivals

release date: Apr 01, 2007
The Rivals
The Rivals marks the first joint project from the top sports writers of New York Times and the Boston Globe--and what better subject than the two baseball teams whose crossed fortunes obsess and define each city. A Struggle for the Ages. . . BOSTON GLOBE JANUARY 6, 1920 RED SOX SELL RUTH FOR $100,000 CASH -------- Demon Slugger of American League, Who Made 29 Home Runs Last Season, Goes to New York Yankees -------- FRAZEE TO BUY NEW PLAYERS The Yankees vs. the Red Sox. Each baseball season begins and ends with unique intensity, focused on a single question: What''s ahead for these two teams? One, the most glamorous, storied, and successful franchise in all of sports; the other, perennially star-crossed but equally rich in baseball history and legend. In The Rivals sports writers of The New York Times and The Boston Globe come together in the first-ever collaboration between the two cities'' leading newspapers to tell the inside story of the teams'' intertwined histories, each from the home team''s perspective. Beginning with the Red Sox''s early glory days (when the Yankees were perennial losers), continuing through the Babe Ruth era and the notorious trade that made the Yankees champions (and marked the Sox with the so-called "Curse of the Bambino"); to Ted Williams vs. Joe DiMaggio; Thurman Munson and Carlton Fisk; Roger Clemens and Pedro Martinez; down to last year''s legendary playoff showdown, The Rivals captures the drama of key eras, events, and personalities of both teams. And who better to tell the story than the baseball writers of the two rival cities? For The New York Times, it''s Dave Anderson, Harvey Araton, Jack Curry, Tyler Kepner, Robert Lipsyte and George Vecsey who report on the Yankee view of the rivalry, while The Boston Globe Gordon Edes, Jackie MacMullan, Bob Ryan, and Dan Shaughnessy recount the view from the Hub. And their stories are richly illustrated with classic photographs and original articles from the archives, capturing the great moments as they happened. For Red Sox fans, Yankees fans, or anyone interested in remarkable baseball history, The Rivals is an expert, up-close look at the longest, and fiercest of all sports rivalries.

In Scoring Position

release date: May 10, 2022
In Scoring Position
A love letter to the game of baseball from one of America''s foremost scribes Bob Ryan has scored every baseball game he''s attended, at every level, since the start of the 1977 season. It''s a deeply personal tradition still going strong at more than 1,400 games and counting. The tattered scorebooks he''s filled are worn from age, travel, and countless summer days, but their grids and scrawled symbols tell the stories of milestones, rivalries, rare historic achievements, and more. In Scoring Position captures the incomparable spirit of baseball, with its infinite possibilities and madcap anomalies. Ryan, alongside baseball historian and statistician Bill Chuck, has scoured his scorecard archives for the most singular events—a switch-hitter being hit by a pitch from both sides of the plate in the same game; a player batting for the cycle off four different pitchers; even back-to-back pinch-hit home runs with two outs in the 9th. Featuring some of the game''s biggest names and wildest scenarios, this is a fascinating romp through baseball history, exuding a pure zeal for this sport that fans of all teams will recognize in themselves. Part of the collection at the library of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, this volume also features reproductions of dozens of scorecards from Ryan''s collection.

The Master Photographer

The Master Photographer
We do not teach photography; we show you how to ''burn'' the knowledge and skills you need deep into the ''firmware'' of your brain. Meet your authors: Professor Bob Ryan ARPS FRSA: a specialist in analysis and the development of expert judgement. This book builds upon decades of his work in the development of deep-learning and the activation of non-conscious skills. Here is a small sample of what has been said about Bob as a photographer, image analyst and educator: ''A highly accomplished, wildlife photographer'' (Chris Weston - amongst the top 50 most influential photographers); ''in the top ten percent of image analysts'' (Jon Fishback - PSA Director of Education Services at the Photographic Society of America); and as an educator: ''student evaluations consistently rank Bob amongst the top three academics on Manchester''s Global MBA'' (Professor Elaine Ferneley, Global & MBA Director, Alliance Manchester Business School). Andy Beel FRPS: a photographic alchemist who can turn the most ordinary and uninspiring of subjects into photographic gold. His specialism, developed over 30 years of intense effort, is in black-and-white photography. Realizing how Bob''s deep-learning methods could radically foreshorten his own struggle for mastery, he now uses them to inspire his own work and to teach others. Here is a small sample of what his clients, workshop participants and talk audiences say about Andy''s work as a photographer and teacher: ''truly stunning'' (Simon Galloway, Group Picture Editor, Bristol News & Media (Bristol Evening Post)); ''as always you are an inspiration'' (David Bathard FRPS AWPF, Frome-Selwood Photographic Society); ''superb tuition, I learned an awful lot from you'' (Jay Charnock FRPS).

Shaman of the Mountain

release date: Sep 01, 2008
Shaman of the Mountain
Herein is the story of a boy Rusty whose heartstrings are stretched taut with happiness, fright, sorrow, shame and physical pain while budding to adulthood. Rusty''s often self inflicted predicaments are conveyed in hindsight with hilarious jocularity while the urgency of their real occurrence in time are confessed with honest clarity so profuse it''s impossible not to become entangled in Rusty''s wheeling emotions. The joy and innocence of Rusty''s spirited childhood is slowly eroded by deceit, misunderstandings, mistakes and heartbreak, yet Rusty rushes energetically forward while stumbling into brief rations of excitement and love for fuel. It arduously teaches Rusty to try to look at life with a little bit of levity and be convinced that another good time is bound to come sooner or later. The book shows the things we often work for the hardest sometimes become what we wanted least, and during such work we discover the things we just happen to get are of what sweet dreams are made.

Larry Bird

release date: Apr 12, 2023
Larry Bird

Transformation Evangelism

release date: Jan 19, 2018
Transformation Evangelism
This book creates a new platform from which to see evangelism. What did Jesus mean when He declared, "Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven?" What is our identity and our calling? We are created by the Father to exercise dominion (not domination) over the earth. This book challenges our current understanding of the Good News and shows how Scripture offers "even better news." This is an edgy, controversial, but Spirit-led look at evangelism from God''s eyes, rather than those of the traditional Church. One reader wrote: "Unbelievable! What a work of love and encouragement! The overall theme is wonderfully uplifting. Finally a gospel message I can feel good about sharing with our broken hurting world." - Jeff Gudim
