The Shield of Mashona
"In this epic tale, Rothman uncompromisingly sets the reader deep in the 16th-century world of the Mediterranean - unmitigated, with no nod to modern sensibilities or expectations. It''s wonderful and refreshing." -Justin M. Lindsay, Historical Novel Society "Love and death in the time of Siege... Even today, 451 years after the four terrible months that almost wrested Malta out of its European context and yanked it back into the Muslim world, the allure of the Great Siege of 1565 lives on, and not just in the local collective memory...The Course of Fortune is a good read which gives a reliable version of the events of the siege and should provide many hours of pleasant reading." -Louis J. Scerri, author of Malta: Origini Della Civilta Mediterranea/ Malta: Origins of Mediterranean Civilization In three volumes, The Course of Fortune -A Novel of the Great Siege of Malta, follows the adventures of a young Spanish soldier-of-fortune Francisco de Barai over the course of fifteen of the most turbulent years in the most turbulent century in history, adventures that climax in the Great Siege of Malta of 1565. During that most momentous of all sieges, tens of thousands of Turks descend on the island, defended by some 600 Knights of Malta and another few thousand mercenaries and Maltese civilians. The horrific and heroic events are recounted with the utmost attention to historical accuracy, just as the entire escalating chain of events is played out against a finely researched tapestry of Renaissance values, superstitions and culture.

The Effects of Mental Imagery Practice on the Performance of Selected Psychomotor Tennis Skills of Postsecondary Students

release date: Jan 01, 2004
The Effects of Mental Imagery Practice on the Performance of Selected Psychomotor Tennis Skills of Postsecondary Students
"The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of mental imagery practice on the performance of selected psychomotor tennis skills of postsecondary students. The principal investigator/researcher conducted a quasi-experimental quantitative study involving a post hoc statistical analysis. The population included six beginning tennis activity classes, for a total of 138 subjects, who participated during the fall 2003 semester on the campus of a small, private midwestern university. The instrument used in this study was the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Tennis skills Test authored by Larry Hensley. This instrument was selected due to its exclusive design for the testing of tennis skills as well as validity and reliability. An alpha level of .05 was used for all analyses. The principal investigator/researcher conducted a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and paired t-tests to examine the mean changes among and within the three groups studied. The results of the study were the following: (a) the control group, Group 3, showed a significant difference between the pretest to posttest, however, not as significant as either Group 1 or Group 2; (b) the group that incorporated the practice of mental imagery prior to physical practice, Group 1, demonstrated a significant difference between the pretest to posttest, recording the highest gains among all groups tested; and (c) the group that incorporated the practice of mental imagery after physically practicing, Group 2, showed a significant difference-- more than Group 3 but less than Group 1. These results are supported by previous research study investigations. The results that both experimental groups employing the use of mental imagery practice in conjugation with physical practice are superior to physical practice alone, are congruent with the literature reviewed. The results that indicated Group 1 using mental imagery prior to physical practice as superior to Group 2 using mental imagery after physical practice and Group 3 physical practice only, can also be found in the literature"--Abstract.
