God is Not Here

release date: May 15, 2015
God is Not Here
In May 2005, Lieutenant Colonel Bill Russell Edmonds of the U.S. Army Special Forces, a decorated counter-terrorism expert, was deployed to the Iraqi city of Mosul, which was boiling over. His job was to advise an Iraqi Intelligence Officer on the art of interrogations, collect intelligence, and monitor the capture and interrogation of insurgents, while applying the brakes on more extreme tactics and torture. From a makeshift basement prison, he would witness a never-ending cycle of some of the darkest things humanity could create. It was a soul crushing minefield of mutually exclusive moral mandates. Edmonds'' training offered little practical guidance for the nuances of the Iraq War, so he had to draw his own red line: what level of torture he would tolerate and what level he would not. A year later he returned home morally and spiritually hollowed-out, with post-traumatic stress and acute moral injury. At first, he thought his distress was from the inevitable adjustment of returning home. In God Is Not Here, Edmonds has gone beyond a blood-and-body-count war memoir, revealing his emotional, psychological, and spiritual trauma—and the tortuous process of his reassembly—while providing a raw look at what happened overseas.

'Modern' Phillips Curves and the Implications for the Statistical Process of Inflation

Your Other Left...idiot!

Your Other Left...idiot!
What was so funny about boot camp? Nothing while you''re going through it. It''s only after that you remember situations in a different light. A wise Marine once said, "It''s impossible to see any humor in an ass kicking until the other guy stops kicking it." Events in this book took place in the early 1950s, right after the Korean War. The Corps, in fact all the services, have no doubt changed since then but I think the aim of what has to be accomplished remains in tact. It is not my purpose to poke fun at the Marine Corps. On the contrary, I have nothing but admiration and loyalty toward the Corps and I believe in the adage, "Once a Marine, always a Marine." As far as the drill instructors go, most were top-notch professionals doing a job that needed to be done. One or two appeared to enjoy the bullying a little too much but they didn''t seem to last. I don''t know where they went but they were usually out of our hair within a couple of weeks. The simple truth is, there would be no Marine Corps without boot camp to teach the willy-nilly how to be Leathernecks. That said, I freely admit I still thrill when they play the Marine Corps Hymn. Even today it makes me stand just a wee bit taller.

Red and Me

release date: Apr 25, 2009
Red and Me
New York Times Bestseller "On the subject of his love of Red Auerbach and his Celtic teammates, Russell is loud and clear. He might object to my use of the word ''love,'' but deny it though you will, Mr. Russell, that''s what sits at the heart of this beautiful book." — Bill Bradley, New York Times Book Review In Red and Me, Boston Celtics basketball legend Bill Russell pays homage to his mentor and coach, the inimitable Red Auerbach. A poignant remembrance of a life-altering relationship in the tradition of Big Russ and Me and Tuesdays With Morrie, Red and Me tells an unforgettable story of one unlikely and enduring friendship set against the backdrop of the greatest basketball dynasty in NBA history. Red Auerbach was one of the greatest basketball coaches in sports history. Bill Russell was the star center and five-time MVP for Auerbach''s Celtics, and together they won eleven championships in thirteen years. But Auerbach and Russell were far more than just coach and player. A short, brash Jew from Brooklyn and a tall, intense African-American from Louisiana and Oakland, the men formed a friendship that evolved into a rare, telling example of deep male camaraderie even as their feelings remained largely unspoken. Red and Me is an extraordinary book: an homage to a peerless coach, which shows how he produced results unlike any other, and an inspiring story of mutual success, in which each man gave his all and gained back even more. Above all, it may be the most honest and heartfelt depiction of male friendship ever captured in print.

The Effects of Mental Imagery Practice on the Performance of Selected Psychomotor Tennis Skills of Postsecondary Students

release date: Jan 01, 2004
The Effects of Mental Imagery Practice on the Performance of Selected Psychomotor Tennis Skills of Postsecondary Students
"The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of mental imagery practice on the performance of selected psychomotor tennis skills of postsecondary students. The principal investigator/researcher conducted a quasi-experimental quantitative study involving a post hoc statistical analysis. The population included six beginning tennis activity classes, for a total of 138 subjects, who participated during the fall 2003 semester on the campus of a small, private midwestern university. The instrument used in this study was the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Tennis skills Test authored by Larry Hensley. This instrument was selected due to its exclusive design for the testing of tennis skills as well as validity and reliability. An alpha level of .05 was used for all analyses. The principal investigator/researcher conducted a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and paired t-tests to examine the mean changes among and within the three groups studied. The results of the study were the following: (a) the control group, Group 3, showed a significant difference between the pretest to posttest, however, not as significant as either Group 1 or Group 2; (b) the group that incorporated the practice of mental imagery prior to physical practice, Group 1, demonstrated a significant difference between the pretest to posttest, recording the highest gains among all groups tested; and (c) the group that incorporated the practice of mental imagery after physically practicing, Group 2, showed a significant difference-- more than Group 3 but less than Group 1. These results are supported by previous research study investigations. The results that both experimental groups employing the use of mental imagery practice in conjugation with physical practice are superior to physical practice alone, are congruent with the literature reviewed. The results that indicated Group 1 using mental imagery prior to physical practice as superior to Group 2 using mental imagery after physical practice and Group 3 physical practice only, can also be found in the literature"--Abstract.
