I write this letter in great haste, as I have just returned from the new carbonatediscoveries, and haven''t any surplus time left. While I was there a driving snow storm raged on the mountains, and slowly meltingmade the yellow ochre into tough plastic clay which adhered to my boots to such an extentthat before I knew it my delicately arched feet were as large as a bale of hay with about thesame symmetrical outlines.A miners'' meeting was held there Wednesday evening, and a district to be called MillCreek District, was formed, being fifteen miles each way. The Nellis cabin or ranch issituated in the center of the district.I presided over the meeting to give it an air of terror and gloom. It was very impressive. There was hardly a dry eye in the house as I was led to the chair by two old miners. I seatedmyself behind the flour barrel, and pounding on the head of the barrel with a pick handle, Icalled the august assemblage to order.Snuffing the candle with my fingers in a graceful and pleasing style, and wiping the blackoff on my pants, I said: "Gentlemen of the Convention: In your selection of a chairman Idetect at once your mental acumen and intelligent foresight. While you feel confident that, in the rose-colored future, prosperity is in store for you, you still remember that now youlook to capital for the immediate development of your district."I am free to state that, although I have been but a few hours in your locality, I am highlygratified with your appearance, and I cheerfully assure you that the coffers which Icommand are at your disposal. In me you behold a capitalist who proposes to develop thecountry, regardless of expense."I also recognize your good sense in selecting an old miner and mineral expert to presideover your meeting. Although it may require something of a mental strain for your chairmanto detect the difference between porphyry and perdition, yet in the actual practicalworkings of a mining camp he feels that he is equal to any emergency."After the band plays something soothing and the chaplain has drawn up a short petitionto the throne of grace, I shall be glad to know the pleasure of the meeting."Round after round of applause greeted this little gem of oratory. A small boy gathered upthe bouquets and filed them with the secretary, when the meeting proceeded with its work. Most of the delegates came instructed, and therefore the business was soon transacted

MY DEAR SIR: You will doubtless be surprised to hear from me so soon, as I did notpromise when I left New York that I would write you at all while here. But now I take pen inhand to say that the Senate and House of Representatives are having a good deal of funwith me, and hope you are enjoying the same great blessing. You will wonder at first why Isend in my expense account before I send in anything for the paper, but I will explain thatto you when I get back. At first I thought I would not bother with the expense account till Igot to your office, but I can now see that it is going to worry me to get there unless I hearfrom you favorably by return mail. When I came here I fell into the mad whirl of society, and attracted a good deal ofattention by my cultivated ways and Jeffersonian method of sleeping with a differentmember of Congress every night.I have not written anything for publication yet, but I am getting material together thatwill make people throughout our broad land open their eyes in astonishment. I shall dealfairly and openly with these great national questions, and frankly hew to the line, let thechips fall where they may, as I heard a man say to-day on the floor of the house-theWillard House, I mean. But I believe in handling great political matters without gloves, asyou will remember, if you have watched my course as justice of the peace and litterateur.Candor is my leading characteristic, and if you will pardon me for saying so in the firstletter you ever received from me I believe there is nothing about my whole character whichseems to challenge my admiration for myself any more than that.Congressmen and their wives are daily landing at the great national Castle Garden andlooking wildly around for the place where they are told they will get their mileage. Onevery hand all is hurry and excitement. Bills are being introduced, acquaintances renewed, and punch bowls are beginning to wear a preoccupied air.I have been mingling with society ever since I came here, and that is one reason I havewritten very little for publication, and did not send what I did write.Yesterday afternoon my money gave out at 3:20, and since that my mind has beenclearer and society has made fewer demands on me. At first I thought I would obtainemployment at the Treasury Department as exchange editor in the greenback room. Then Iremembered that I would get very faint before I could go through a competitiveexamination, and, in the meantime, I might lose social caste by wearing my person on theoutside of my clothes. So I have resolved to write you a chatty letter about Washington, assuring you that I am well, and asking you kindly to consider the enclosed tabulated bill ofexpenses, as I need the money to buy Christmas presents and get home with
