Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) is tolerant of short mowing and high traffic, but these conditions increase pathogen susceptibility. A prevalent disease on bentgrass golf course greens and tee boxes is Brown Patch (Rhizoctonia solani). One potential component of integrated pathogen management is correct nitrogen (N) fertilization. The objective for this study was to evaluate the relationship between N and brown patch on A. stolonifera. The hypothesis is that both excessive and deficient N would result in increased brown patch severity when compared to optimum N. Bentgrass was grown in a growth chamber in hydroponic conditions at nine levels of N concentration. Three of these levels (2.5, 10, and 80 mg N L[superscript -1]) were selected from the first study to represent deficient, optimum, and excessive N. Bentgrass was grown for 56 d at these concentrations in the hydroponic solution with or without Rhizoctonia inoculation. This study was repeated for verification with nearly identical results. In both studies, clipping the final harvest biomass increased significantly with increasing N concentration. Rhizoctonia inoculation resulted in atypical root-N response, which increased linearly even at the highest N rate. NDVI measurements revealed increased shoot virulence in inoculated plants. Visual lesions indicated that excessive N fertilization either resulted in decreased inoculation or masked symptoms of infection. It appears that Rhizoctonia has a negative impact on crown growth and development, to which the plant may respond with in increased root and shoot growth.
