Architecture and Politics in Germany, 1918-1945

Architecture and Politics in Germany, 1918-1945
In the spring of 1933, the Nazi government began its campaign to eliminate "modern" tendencies in German art--with particular emphasis on architecture--and to eradicate what it chose to call "art bolshevism." The Bauhaus, by then an internationally famous center of avant garde design, was shut down. In a close analysis of intellectual, political, social, and economic developments, Lane shows that Nazi views on architecture were generated by a complex of historical factors. Far from being cohesive, Nazi cultural policy was largely the product of the conflicting ideas about art held by the Nazi leaders and their efforts to advance these ideas during internal power struggles.

How to Quit Smoking Even If You Don't Want To

release date: Jul 18, 2008
How to Quit Smoking Even If You Don't Want To
You can quit smoking! It is not impossible! I use to say, "I don''t want to quit smoking" I asked myself, "What if this was the addiction?" I then thought, I want to, want to quit. What could make you want to quit? My biggest motivation came from not wanting to be controlled by this nicotine. I wanted to be in charge. This book is about how to transform one''s thinking while simultaneously getting ready to quit. "This book gives you a step-by-step plan that will show you how to get ready to quit. Quitting smoking is like going into battle. With this plan in place you will be ready to win! You will learn how to develop your willpower and tap into an incredible source of "Self-Power." This plan shows you exactly what to do. How to Quit Smoking Even If You Don''t Want To is in textbook format with ten brainstorming exercises you must do. People who smoke are often on "auto-pilot-thinking." This plan interrupts the "auto-pilot" and shows you how to re-write the script. It is true that you do not have to want to quit smoking but you do have to want to change something about how you make decisions. It is not complicated. As a matter of fact it is all very easy. By doing the exercises and following through with the plan you will "see" exactly what is holding you on to cigarettes. When you "see" what is keeping you addicted it becomes a whole lot easier to let go. This book will show you how to eliminate 75% of the nicotine fits, if not more. When you are all done the brainstorming exercises you will have made a one-of-a-kind, custom-made tool that will tell you what to think, when to think it, what to do and when, and how to act and how not to act. You will use this tool when you open your last pack. I often hear people say, "I have tried everything." My response is, "Have you looked in the mirror?" The answers lie inside you, not in the drugstore. This book is about transforming yourself from the inside. Some of the exercises can help you change other areas of your life that you are not completely satisfied with. My plan and method is about transforming your mind into one that can do what it could not do before. This is a serious subject with a twist of humor. I am sure you will enjoy it! Do not be afraid of trying to quit smoking. Be afraid of what will happen if you do not! Be free! Go for it!

Frances L. Goodrich's Brown Book of Weaving Drafts

release date: Feb 28, 2014
Frances L. Goodrich's Brown Book of Weaving Drafts
A collection of traditional eighteenth and nineteenth century weaving drafts, written sequences of the threading order on the loom used to create specific patterns. They are presented here in their original form as gathered by Frances L. Goodrich and illustrated in over 160 color photos. This volume also contains over 200 valuable modern translations of the same drafts for use by today''s weavers. In 1890, Frances L. Goodrich came to the southern mountains in North Carolina from a life of culture to live and work among people who had little opportunity for education or social enrichment. Through her work for the Presbyterian Home Mission Board, she grew to love and respect these neighbors who worked so hard and had so little. She established schools, a small hospital, and the Allanstand Cottage Industries. As she traveled the mountain roads and trails on horseback, Miss Goodrich collected these precious weaving drafts from the women who wove for Allanstand Cottage Industries. In your hands is the heart of that collection.

National Romanticism and Modern Architecture in Germany and the Scandinavian Countries

release date: Jan 01, 2000
National Romanticism and Modern Architecture in Germany and the Scandinavian Countries
This book provides a comprehensive examination of one of the most important modernist traditions. Offering a new interpretation of its origins, Barbara Miller Lane focuses on the movement called ''National Romanticism'', which flourished in Germany and Scandinavia from about 1890 to 1920. During this period, painters, interior designers, city planners and architects created a new kind of domestic architecture and interior design, as well as monumental architecture. Drawing upon local and regional folk traditions, and encouraging a simple way of life, architects such as Eliel Saarinen, Hans Poelzig, and Martin Nyrop, looked back to medieval and even prehistoric times for their models, as they also tried to create a new architecture for the new millennium. Their buildings encouraged new kinds of social and political relationships and have had a profound influence in the architecture of Germany and Scandinavia.

The Dying Days Of Segregation In Australia

release date: Aug 31, 2017
The Dying Days Of Segregation In Australia
While this book is an up-to-date account of the situation in Australia generally and particularly in Yarrabah, an Aboriginal community near Cairns, Queensland, most of the research was done in 1984. This was an incredibly significant time when nearly 100 years of legal oppression and segregation of Indigenous people in Queensland came to an end. What began in 1897 as legislation to ostensibly protect Indigenous people from white society, including outright slaughter, ended up as the Queensland Aborigines Act which put them on reserves with a permit system like apartheid South Africa? Read real life stories about segregation, self-management, land rights and human rights.

Taking Root in an Honored People

release date: Jul 04, 2015
Taking Root in an Honored People
As a young child, Barbara Miller found herself intrigued by the stories she heard each week in Sunday school. As an adult, Miller ventured beyond the Protestant denominations of her youth to find the sense of spirituality she craved within Roman Catholicism. It wasn''t until she began to explore Reform Judaism, however, that she found a life sustaining blend of study, ritual, and prayer that embodied her understanding of the purpose of life. Taking Root in an Honored People chronicles Miller''s conversion to Reform Judaism and her efforts to create her own identity as a Jew without the benefit of family tradition or heritage to draw upon. Each chapter focuses on a particular aspect of Miller''s search, and on the ways that her conversion called her to a new orientation-a process of building upon her past instead of denying it. Using biblical texts to illustrate her journey and provide parallel narratives, Miller explores many facets of the convert''s experience, including what it means to be a woman within Judaism, the individual and communal significance of the holidays, the importance of social justice, and coming to terms with the Holocaust.
