Nazi Ideology before 1933

release date: Nov 06, 2014
Nazi Ideology before 1933
This collection of early writings by leading Nazi intellectuals sheds light on the evolution of Nazi political thought as the party came to power. Barbara Miller Lane and Leila J. Rupp bring together a crucial yet hitherto inaccessible body of material that thoroughly chronicles Nazi ideology before 1933. It includes the extensive writings and programs published by Dietrich Eckart, Alfred Rosenberg, Gottfried Feder, Joseph Goebbels, Gregor and Otto Strasser, Heinrich Himmler, and Richard Walther Darré. Hitler’s role in the development of Nazi ideology, interpreted here as a very permissive one, is thoroughly assessed. In commentary by the editors, the significance of each Nazi theorist is evaluated at each stage of the history of the party. Lane and Rupp conclude that early Nazi ideology was not a consistent whole but a doctrine in the process of rapid development to which new ideas were continually introduced. By the time the Nazis came to power, however, a group of interrelated assertions and official promises had been made to party followers and to the public. Hitler and the Third Reich had to accommodate this ideology, even when not implementing it. Each selection is accompanied by an introductory note and annotations which clarify its relationship to other works of the author and other writings of the period. Also included are original translations of the “Twenty-Five Points” and a number of little-known official party statements.

The Stasi Files Unveiled

release date: Jan 26, 2022
The Stasi Files Unveiled
In 1992 the massive files of East Germany''s infamous Ministry for State Security, the Stasi, were made publicly available and thousands of former East Germans began to confront their contents. Finally it was possible for ordinary citizens to ascertain who had worked for the Stasi, either on a full-time basis or as an "unofficial employee," the Stasi''s term for an informer. The revelations from these documents sparked feuds old and new among a population already struggling through enormous social and political upheaval. Drawing upon the Stasi files and upon interviews with one-time informers, this book examines the impact of the Stasi legacy in united Germany. Barbara Miller examines such aspects of the informer''s experience as: the recruitment procedure; daily life and work; motivation and justification. She goes on to consider the dealings of politicians and the courts with the Stasi and its employees. Her analysis then turns to the way in which this aspect of recent German history has been remembered, and the phenomenal impact of the opening of the files on such perceptions of the past. The Stasi Files Unveiled: Guilt and Compliance in a Unified Germany offers important new perspectives on the nature of individual and collective memory and is a fascinating investigation of modern German society. Barbara Miller graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1991 with a degree in German and psychology. She taught and researched in Germany and Austria before completing her doctoral thesis in Glasgow in 1997. She is now based in Sydney, Australia.

Houses for a New World

release date: Jul 12, 2022
Houses for a New World
The fascinating history of the twentieth century''s most successful experiment in mass housing While the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, and their contemporaries frequently influences our ideas about house design at the midcentury, most Americans during this period lived in homes built by little-known builders who also served as developers of the communities. Often dismissed as "little boxes, made of ticky-tacky," the tract houses of America''s postwar suburbs represent the twentieth century’s most successful experiment in mass housing. Houses for a New World is the first comprehensive history of this uniquely American form of domestic architecture and urbanism. Between 1945 and 1965, more than thirteen million houses—most of them in new ranch and split-level styles—were constructed on large expanses of land outside city centers, providing homes for the country’s rapidly expanding population. Focusing on twelve developments in the suburbs of Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Los Angeles, Barbara Miller Lane tells the story of the collaborations between builders and buyers, showing how both wanted houses and communities that espoused a modern way of life—informal, democratic, multiethnic, and devoted to improving the lives of their children. The resulting houses differed dramatically from both the European International Style and older forms of American domestic architecture. Based on a decade of original research, and accompanied by hundreds of historical images, plans, and maps, this book presents an entirely new interpretation of the American suburb. The result is a fascinating history of houses and developments that continue to shape how tens of millions of Americans live. Featured housing developments in Houses for a New World: Boston area: Governor Francis Farms (Warwick, RI) Wethersfield (Natick, MA) Brookfield (Brockton, MA) Chicago area: Greenview Estates (Arlington Heights, IL) Elk Grove Village Rolling Meadows Weathersfield at Schaumburg Los Angeles and Orange County area: Cinderella Homes (Anaheim, CA) Panorama City (Los Angeles) Rossmoor (Los Alamitos, CA) Philadelphia area: Lawrence Park (Broomall, PA) Rose Tree Woods (Broomall, PA)

Service Dog Skills Faster

release date: Aug 29, 2024
Service Dog Skills Faster
This book and method are about showing a dog a concept, starting with the first step, which we call the base step. Showing the dog what tools nature gave it--teeth, nose, paws, and their smell--is the first step. Then show the dog the little steps leading to the task. Going up and down, the idea steps like concept spiraling, using the number three for the smallest number you can remember, like chunking, and using tools to insert to help the dog learn better, like scaffolding tools. Using it all like a foraging puzzle, they can figure out the task for themselves. The best thing is that even though this is a tough method for the trainer to learn, it''s the easiest and fastest for the dog. When done correctly, a smart dog can learn a skill in ten minutes, something that can take many months with conditioning. Even a dumb dog that wants to work can almost always learn in three sessions, maybe lasting up to an hour each. The dog is not burnt out and does longer sessions often when it''s working for itself, solving a puzzle. What we hope to accomplish with the sharing of this method is to shorten the time it takes to train a service dog and the time it takes for people with disabilities to get one.

Explores how women can heal deep emotional pain through a new therapeutic approach that combines mindfulness meditation with psychotherapy. • Includes 8 vivid stories of women overcoming great emotional pain and life obstacles through Mindfulness Psychotherapy. • Each story is followed by a discussion and a relevant mindfulness meditation. Now she presents the integration of her life''s work through the poignant stories of eight women--all faced with critical decisions and tough life circumstances--and how they used Mindfulness Psychotherapy to attain greater levels of peace and well-being. The author offers a radical shift in a woman''s relationship to life.
