Santa envidia

Engaging in Educational Research-Practice Partnerships
Engaging in Educational Research-Practice Partnerships guides academic researchers into forming mutually respectful, collaborative, and scalable partnerships with school practitioners. Despite robust theoretical and conceptual planning, research on learning is often removed from real settings and generates findings with limited practical relevance, yielding frustration for K-12 stakeholders. This book provides invaluable resources to researchers seeking to work with practitioners as they solve problems and improve outcomes while answering fundamental questions about who gets to generate knowledge, from where, to whom, and in what contexts. A range of illustrative case studies and strategies explores how to apply appropriate theories and methodologies, negotiate agendas that ensure mutually beneficial goals, determine the role of pracademics, establish institutional supports, policies, and procedures that amplify impact and sustainability, and much more.

Holy Envy

release date: Mar 30, 2019
Holy Envy
The renowned Christian preacher and New York Times bestselling author of An Altar in the World recounts her moving discoveries of finding the sacred in unexpected places while teaching world religions to undergraduates in Baptist-saturated rural Georgia, revealing how God delights in confounding our expectations. Christians are taught that God is everywhere--a tenet that is central to Barbara Brown Taylor''s life and faith. In Holy Envy, she continues her spiritual journey, contemplating the myriad ways she encountered God while exploring other faiths with her students in the classroom, and on field trips to diverse places of worship. Both she and her students ponder how the knowledge and insights they have gained raise important questions about belief, and explore how different practices relate to their own faith. Inspired by this intellectual and spiritual quest, Barbara turns once again to the Bible for guidance, to see what secrets lay buried there. Throughout Holy Envy, Barbara weaves together stories from her classroom with reflections on how her own spiritual journey has been challenged and renewed by connecting with people of other traditions--and by meeting God in them. At the heart of her odyssey is her trust that it is God who pushes her beyond her comfortable boundaries and calls us to "disown" our privatised versions of the divine--a change that ultimately deepens her relationship with both the world and with God, and ours.

To God Be the Glory for All He Has Done

release date: Nov 01, 2018

Resilience for All

release date: May 24, 2018
Resilience for All
In the United States, people of color are disproportionally more likely to live in environments with poor air quality, in close proximity to toxic waste, and in locations more vulnerable to climate change and extreme weather events. In many vulnerable neighborhoods, structural racism and classism prevent residents from having a seat at the table when decisions are made about their community. In an effort to overcome power imbalances and ensure local knowledge informs decision-making, a new approach to community engagement is essential. In Resilience for All, Barbara Brown Wilson looks at less conventional, but often more effective methods to make communities more resilient. She takes an in-depth look at what equitable, positive change through community-driven design looks like in four communities—East Biloxi, Mississippi; the Lower East Side of Manhattan; the Denby neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan; and the Cully neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. These vulnerable communities have prevailed in spite of serious urban stressors such as climate change, gentrification, and disinvestment. Wilson looks at how the lessons in the case studies and other examples might more broadly inform future practice. She shows how community-driven design projects in underserved neighborhoods can not only change the built world, but also provide opportunities for residents to build their own capacities.

JoAnna Poehlmann
JoAnna Poehlmann once told Barbara Brown Lee, "I have all these ideas in my head and I''m afraid I''m going to run out of time. I''m afraid I''m not going to get everything done." JoAnna Poehlmann: Now and Then is witness to all these ideas. With over a hundred images and in three essays Poehlmann and her work are introduced to the larger audience. In her essay Barbara Brown Lee introduces us to her friend and lets us see the keen, meticulous artist with a wry sense of humor that peaks though all her work. Then Barbara Manger records Poehlmann''s history and reveals the variety of techniques and concepts she has explored in her long, successful career. From scientific drawings and silverpoint to large lithographic stones, Poehlmann uses her skill to explore the natural world and pay homage to the artists who have preceded her. As her concepts expanded, she added collage, found objects, and xerography to her toolbox. In the final essay John Shannon explores Poehlmann''s work in relationship to historic artistic themes and modern, contemporary art concepts. Most importantly, Now and Then beautifully presents the work. Kate Hawley''s layout and Robb Quinn''s photography let the work dominate the page. We see Poehlmann travel from intimate drawings through collage and collection to her current Travel Troves and Homages.Poehlmann''s unique observations, disciplined craft, and humor (the Seventh Sense according to Poehlmann) show her to be a truely modern artist. Joanna Poehlmann; Now and Then gives us, her audience, a better chance to explore what she has created.

Questioning Architectural Judgment

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Questioning Architectural Judgment
The book shines light on the problem of judgment, particularly in the realm of architectural "technics" and the codes that regulate it. The struggle to define "sustainability," and thus judge architecture through such lenses, is but one dimension of the contemporary problem of judgment. By providing the reader with an inherently interdisciplinary study of a particular discipline--architecture, it brings to the topic lenses that challenge the too frequently unexamined assumptions of the discipline. By situating architecture within a broader cultural field and using case studies to dissect the issues discussed, the book emphasizes that it is not simply a matter of designing better, more efficient, or more stringent codes to guide place-making, but a matter of reconstructing the boundaries of the systems to be coded. The authors are winners of the EDRA Place-Research Award 2014 for their work on the Green Alley Demonstration Project used in the book.
