A series of four hard science fiction novellas, set in distant future where civilisation is built on purely biological technology.

The crucial question of the quality of automatic classification is treated at considerable length, and empirical data are introduced to support the hypothesis that classification quality improves as more information about each document is used for input to the classification program. Six non-judgmental criteria are used in testing the hypothesis for 100 keyboard lists (each list representing a document) for a series of computer runs in which the number of words per document is increased progressively from 12 to 36. Four of the six criteria indicate the hypothesis holds, and two point to no effect. Finally, the future of automatic classification and some of the practical problems to be faced are outlined.

In this paper we document first that, in contrast with their widely perceived excess returns, popular carry trade strategies yield low systemic-risk-adjusted returns. In particular, we show that carry trade returns are highly correlated with the return of a VIX rolldown strategy -- i.e., the strategy of shorting VIX futures and rolling down its term structure --nd that the latter strategy performs at least as well as beta-adjusted carry trades, for individual currencies and diversified portfolios. In contrast, hedging the carry with exchange rate options produces large returns that are not a compensation for systemic risk. We show that this result stems from the fact that the corresponding portfolio of exchange rate options provides a cheap form of systemic insurance. Presents results of calculations of power and fuel consumption for compound engine composed of reciprocating engine, supercharger, and exhaust-gas turbine.

An investigation was made to determine the effect of exhaust pressure on the performance of an 18-cylinder air-cooled radial engine equipped with a conventional exhaust collector ring. The investigation covered a range of engine speeds from 1200 to 2400 rpm, inlet-manifold pressures from 30 to 45 inches of mercury absolute, and fuel-air ratios of 0.069, 0.085, and 0.100. The exhaust pressure was varied, in general, from approximately 7 inches of mercury absolute to about 20 inches of mercury above the inlet manifold pressure.
