Never Underestimate the Spirit

release date: Sep 07, 2023
Never Underestimate the Spirit
Never Underestimate the Spirit evolved from a series of weekly memos I sent to my employees, encouraging personal and professional learning and growth. Although I began writing to encourage, motivate, and inspire them, in time it was they who provided a never-ending pool of inspiration to me. To quote Albert Schweitzer: "At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us." When we share our stories we are sharing our spirits. A story is a mysterious thing. Often that which seems less significant to the writer is something that is treasured most by the reader. This should serve as a lesson for us all. Share your spirit with others. You never know when your words may rekindle the flame for someone who needs their spirit restored.

Join John Michael Greer (Collapse Now and Avoid the Rush) for this anthology of genre-founding climate-fiction parodies, bursting with twelve improbable visions of future solutions to every existential problem. The world''s predicaments are plenty real, but our current solutions-"raising awareness" and being "intersectional," mostly-aren''t helping much. How about some irreverent new futures, like ?? The world''s richest Karrenn butting heads with Sweden''s most entitled environmental wunderkind? More than you ever wanted to know about a future industry that puts people (into the grinding machine) first? All the trouble that ensues after a chance discovery at the Australian Wildlife Fund gives the world its wish for limitless energy? And 9 more iconoclastic futures guaranteed to bust blood vessels in the foreheads of true believers in the latest way to Save the World Without Really Trying. The coming decades of the Long Descent from the heights of the fossil fuel age won''t be easy, but if we can learn to laugh at ourselves, then maybe, with luck, on some far-off day we can all die with a grin

Industrial Bank

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Industrial Bank
Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt declared a bank holiday on March 5, 1933, closing banks across the country until they proved financial soundness. Meanwhile, as the United States crawled out of the Great Depression, Jesse H. Mitchell and a group of black businessmen accomplished the extraordinary--they started a black-owned bank on a street known as "Black Broadway" in the nation''s capital. Mitchell, a Howard University-educated lawyer and realtor, and his friends sold $65,000 in stock, and in the sweltering heat on August 20, 1934, Industrial Bank of Washington opened for business. A range of black investors rallied around the effort, from individuals, churches, and service-oriented organizations to savvy business owners. The bank has carried on for three generations: Mitchell''s son B. Doyle Mitchell Sr. succeeded him as president in 1953, who was then succeeded in 1993 by his grandson B. Doyle Mitchell Jr. as president and CEO and his granddaughter Patricia A. Mitchell as executive vice president.

Carry Trade and Systemic Risk

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Carry Trade and Systemic Risk
In this paper we document first that, in contrast with their widely perceived excess returns, popular carry trade strategies yield low systemic-risk-adjusted returns. In particular, we show that carry trade returns are highly correlated with the return of a VIX rolldown strategy -- i.e., the strategy of shorting VIX futures and rolling down its term structure --nd that the latter strategy performs at least as well as beta-adjusted carry trades, for individual currencies and diversified portfolios. In contrast, hedging the carry with exchange rate options produces large returns that are not a compensation for systemic risk. We show that this result stems from the fact that the corresponding portfolio of exchange rate options provides a cheap form of systemic insurance. Keywords: carry trade, forward premium puzzle, vix futures and rolldown, interest parity condition, Fama-French factors. JEL Classification: F31, G01, G15.

Perpetuations

Perpetuations
Jonathan Foster was unlike any twelve year old boy growing up in the 1960''s in a semi-rural area of a Midwestern city. The only brother of three sisters, the youngest sister Sarah, looked up to him as big brother and sometimes hero; someone to try and emulate and admire. Neither of them had any idea that their brother-sister relationship would be used later in life to manipulate them both. The mysterious disappearance of Sarah leaves Jonathan with a guilt that he carries for over twenty-five years and into a successful career, marriage and fatherhood that finally manifests itself into threatening and destroying everything that he holds dear to him. Then the mayhem begins. Sarah comes back from presumably being dead and wreaks havoc on her family with only one goal in sight. Her big brother must be made atonable for not what he did to her twenty-five years before, but for sins committed in a previous life. With a close friend that turns traitor, a mysterious death and near-fatal accidents along the way, it all comes down to a final showdown between Jonathan and his resurrected little sister Sarah and evil itself. The results leave Jonathan not just starting to understand his past, but also raise the question of why? Why he and a select group of others like him, have the ability to not have lived in previous lives over the centuries, but to also retain the memories and experiences from one generation to the next?

Understanding and Treating Adults With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

release date: Apr 02, 2007
Understanding and Treating Adults With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
An estimated seven million American adults have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Understanding and Treating Adults With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder provides accurate, timely information about the nature and treatment of this disorder. Written in a collegial style, this resource combines evidence-based material with clinical experience to address problems in diagnosing and treating adults with ADHD. Dr. Doyle shows how diagnostic and treatment methods in children with ADHD also apply to affected adults. He examines the role of medications, including new agents that expand the range of therapeutic choices. Understanding the evolution of the concept and treatment of ADHD in children illuminates current thinking about the disorder in adults. Dr. Doyle presents guidelines for establishing a valid diagnosis, including clinical interviews and standardized rating scales. He covers genetic and biochemical bases of the disorder. He also addresses the special challenges of forming a therapeutic alliance -- working with "coach" caregivers; cultural, ethnic, and racial issues; legal considerations; and countertransference issues. He explores a range of options for treating adult ADHD: Detailed facts about using medication, with specific information on both CNS stimulants and nonstimulant medications. He also discusses highly touted medications that are actually ineffective. Full coverage of comprehensive treatment approaches beyond medication -- focusing on cognitive behavioral therapies, among others. He uses a detailed clinical example drawn from several patients to illustrate issues involved in treating ADHD adults over time. Complete review of conditions that may require treatment before ADHD can be addressed. Many ADHD adults struggle with comorbid anxiety, affective disorders, and substance abuse. Dr. Doyle explains how overlooked ADHD can complicate the treatment of other disorders. He provides strategies for the patient with medication-resistant or treatment-refractory ADHD. The book provides in-depth discussion of such issues as the impact of ADHD in the workplace, including steps for maximizing job satisfaction; special considerations related to women; and the effect of ADHD on families. A useful appendix helps readers and patients find reliable information about ADHD on the Internet, allowing clinicians to develop an "e-prescription" to supplement medication and other interventions. Dr. Doyle advocates the promise of enhanced life prospects for adults with ADHD that effective treatment provides. Besides addressing the special challenges of ADHD adults, Dr. Doyle conveys the rewards of working with patients who prove resourceful, creative, and persistent.

Congress, Defense, and the Budget Enforcement Act in 1992
The budget controls prescribed by BEA were rather faithfully implemented in 1992, but the deficit continued to grow and the clarity of the budget process was diminished. Spending on mandatories accelerated. The discretionary budgets were met and the defense accounts provided what deficit relief occurred in 1992. Spending control was not deficit control in 1992.
