Two undercover agents take the greatest risk of their careers—and lives—in these thrilling first two books in Loreth Anne White’s Bellona Channel series! MELTING THE ICE Hannah McGuire’s resort-town life had been quiet, happy and safe. Until her best friend was murdered and the investigation forced her into a partnership with Dr. Rex Logan—the man she’d loved, lost and been hiding from for six years. Rex had put Hannah’s life in danger once before. Now he had to face her again. And this time, to protect her, he was staying close—very close. Working to expose a terrorist who possessed a weapon that could threaten global security, Rex was defenseless in the face of the powerful passion that still simmered between them. SAFE PASSAGE Wounded government agent Scott Armstrong hated his newest assignment—baby-sitting scientist Dr. Skye Van Rijn. As their enemy closed in, Scott was forced to choose between his loyalties to his job—and his passion for the woman who might just be able to save his soul . . .

More Heaven

release date: Feb 24, 2016
More Heaven
Based on a true story, More Heaven is about six children with special needs and the remarkable teacher who gives them a chance at learning and life. Despite challenges and a lack of support, Miss Tina Randolph’s commitment to reach, teach, and inspire these children is unwavering. By accepting their uniqueness and participating in their private fantasy world, while at the same time engaging them in the real world, she eventually succeeds. Tina, her quick-witted teacher’s aide Kaye, and the children mount a tireless, daily battle to shift the tide toward the acceptance of people who are different. The experiment, begun in chaotic, uncharted waters, bridges the gap of understanding and paves the way for the inclusionary practices of education and society’s acceptance of children and adults with special needs. This is a road that continues to need paving, making the messages in More Heaven equally relevant today. The book evolved from an experiment in the Philadelphia school system in the late 1970s in response to the 1975 Education for the Handicapped Act, ruling that public schools in the US educate all children with disabilities, despite their severity. Previously, many of these special needs children were kept at home—isolated and denied access to the mainstream. More Heaven is a powerful story of compassion, determination, disappointment, triumph, and love.

The Impact of Migration on Poland

release date: Sep 10, 2018
The Impact of Migration on Poland
How has the international mobility of Polish citizens intertwined with other influences to shape society, culture, politics and economics in contemporary Poland? The Impact of Migration on Poland offers a new approach for understanding how migration affects sending countries, and provides a wide-ranging analysis of how Poland has changed, and continues to change, since EU accession in 2004. The authors explore an array of social trends and their causes before using in-depth interview data to illustrate how migration contributes to those causes. They address fundamental questions about whether and how Polish society is becoming more equal and more cosmopolitan, arguing that for particular segments of society migration does make a difference, and can be seen as both leveller and eye-opener. While the book focuses mainly on stayers in Poland, and their multiple contacts with Poles in other countries, Chapter 9 analyses ‘Polish society abroad’, a more accurate concept than ‘community’ in countries like the UK, and Chapter 10 considers impacts of immigration to Poland. The book is written in a lively and accessible style, and will be important reading for anyone interested in the influence of migration on society, as well as students and scholars researching EU mobility, migration theory and methodology, and issues facing contemporary Europe.

An essay by White, as well as an excerpt from Rachel Carson''s The Edge of the Sea, set the tone for this book by reflecting on change at both the edge of the sea and life.

Small-town Russia

release date: Jan 01, 2004
Small-town Russia
This book examines a number of key questions about social change in contemporary Russia - issues such as how people survive when they are not paid for months on end, ''the New Poor'', the falling birth rate, why so many Russian men die in middle age, whether regional identities are becoming stronger, and how people''s sense of ''Russianness'' has developed since the creation of the Russian Federation in 1992. It examines these issues by looking at actual experiences in three small Russian towns. It includes a great deal of original ethnographic research, and, by looking at real places overall, provides a good sense of how different aspects of social change are interlinked, and how they actually affect real people''s lives.

Democracy, Justice, and the Welfare State

release date: Nov 01, 2010
Democracy, Justice, and the Welfare State
The commitment to &“end welfare as we know it&” shaped public policy in the 1990s. Analysts all seemed to agree that public welfare programs were a resounding failure. What should better public care look like? Democracy, Justice, and the Welfare State sets up a dialogue between work on the ethic of care and studies of public care in practice. White argues that care as it is currently institutionalized often both assumes and perpetuates dependency and so paternalistic relationships of authority. Better public care requires that such paternalistic practices be challenged. Care appropriate to a democratic context must itself be a democratic practice.

Hero-ego in Search of Self

release date: Jan 01, 2004
Hero-ego in Search of Self
In Hero-Ego in Search of Self, Judy Anne White offers a perceptive explanation for continued interest in the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf. Building upon the earlier work of Jeffery Helterman and John Miles Foley, she argues that the sum of all confrontations between hero and monster in Beowulf equals the process of individual psychological development identified by Carl Jung as individuation. Dr. White''s study proposes that the hero''s struggle is the universal struggle towards self-knowledge - and that Beowulf thus resonates for the contemporary reader as it did for the poet''s original audience.

Polish Cities of Migration

release date: Nov 18, 2024
Polish Cities of Migration
Polish Cities of Migration analyses how Poland is transitioning to a new identity as a ‘country of immigration’, although its ‘country of emigration’ identity remains strong outside a handful of bigger cities. The book explores two interconnected puzzles: how Poland’s migration transition is influenced by the fact that it is simultaneously a country of emigration, and why migrants are spreading out beyond the metropolises, often settling with their families in smaller cities with limited labour markets, cities from which Poles themselves continue to migrate. It argues that migrants’ feeling of comfort in such locations can be explained mostly by network and lifestyle considerations. These link to impressions that local Poles – who used to be migrants themselves, and/or have family and friends abroad – possess pragmatic and accepting attitudes towards migration, particularly from Ukraine. The book is based on in-depth interviews with 37 Polish return migrants, 70 Ukrainians and 17 other foreigners living in Kalisz, Płock and Piła. Key concepts include migration culture, livelihood strategies and place attachment. The analysis is situated within a wide range of existing secondary literature and contributes towards understanding the impact of migration on Poland, Ukrainian labour migration and wider global migration processes in the twenty-first century. Praise for Polish Cities of Migration ''A nuanced portrait of a Central European country in an era of fundamental socio-cultural transformations brought about by migration ... A valuable and original contribution to the field of European migration research ... based on impressive empirical material.'' Katarzyna Andrejuk, Polish Academy of Sciences ‘This superb book by a leading authority on Polish migration breaks new ground by focusing on smaller Polish cities and the simultaneous impact of continuing emigration, return migration and Ukrainian immigration in shaping Poland’s transition to a new country of net in-migration.’ Russell King, University of Sussex
