The Hellenistic Pottery from the Panayia Field, Corinth

release date: Jan 01, 2010
The Hellenistic Pottery from the Panayia Field, Corinth
The new chronology of Corinthian fine ware presented in this dissertation is based on pottery from the recently discovered Hellenistic deposits (dated from the 3rd to 1st c. B.C.) in the Panayia Field. This new Panayia Field chronology was created by first quantifying the pottery in each deposit and then seriating the deposits in order to plot the initial production and use-life of individual ceramic shapes. The results substantially revise the previous chronology of Corinthian Hellenistic pottery published in Corinth VII. 3, which has long been acknowledged as problematic by scholars of the period. One key aspect in which the Panayia Field chronology differs from its predecessor is in the recognition that pottery production resumed in Corinth after the sack of the city in 146 B.C. The evidence for a post-146 B.C. or interim period ceramic industry and its products are discussed in detail. Using the new Panayia Field chronology, the South Stoa and numerous previously excavated deposits at Corinth are re-assessed. Arguably, the most important Hellenistic structure in Corinth, the South Stoa, now appears to have been begun in the 290s rather than the 330s B.C. Attempts are also made to address the cultural and economic history of Hellenistic Corinth for the first time. For instance, the adoption of certain shapes into the local ceramic assemblage illustrates the influence of the Hellenistic koine on Corinthian culture. At the local level, the continued production of ceramic kraters in the late 3rd to early 2nd c. B.C. and their findspots seem to suggest that metal vessels were more commonly used in public spaces. In terms of trade, the data on imported fine ware and amphoras from more than 60 deposits clearly demonstrate the flow of goods through the city and Corinth''s role in the trade networks of the Hellenistic period. This analysis reveals a strong connection to Athens during the Macedonian occupation, increasing contact with Italy and the Aegean beginning in the late 3rd c. B.C. and the continuity of Corinth''s economic contacts into the interim period. This research therefore also contributes significantly to our understanding of this important commercial city''s external contacts during the Hellenistic period.

Modeling Mortuary Behavior Based on Secondary Burial Data from Carson Mound Group, Coahoma County, Mississippi
Abstract: Mortuary data can be a powerful analytical tool for understanding the social and symbolic systems of prehistoric people. Secondary burials provide particular insight because of the increased social handling and preparation necessary to produce multiple burials. The Carson Mound site contains a large Mississippian Era cemetery of secondary, bundle burials. Burial 4 at Carson is a mass burial with a minimum of 36 individuals, both males and females in nearly equal ratios, ranging in age-at-death from 2.5 years to 50 years old. The composition of the bundles appears to be commingled suggesting the use of a charnel house. The cemetery at the site is surrounded by a palisade, separating the mortuary area from the remainder of the site. The burial and site data from Carson suggest a possible social emphasis on the corporate group in the secondary burial ceremony.

Mass Transfer Mechanisms During the Solvent Recovery of Heavy Oil

release date: Jan 01, 2009
Mass Transfer Mechanisms During the Solvent Recovery of Heavy Oil
Canada has the second largest proven oil reserves next to Saudi Arabia which is mostly located in Alberta and Saskatchewan but is unconventional heavy oil and bitumen. The tar sands are found at the surface and are mined, yet 80% of the 173 billion barrels of heavy oil and bitumen exist in-situ according to the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP). Two factors inhibit the economic extraction and processing of Canadian heavy oil; its enormous viscosity ranging from 1000 to over 1 million mPa.s and the asphaltene content (high molecular weight molecules containing heavy metals and sulphur). Heavy oil and bitumen were only included in the reserves estimates through the efforts of Canadian enhanced oil recovery (EOR) research. Viscosity reduction is the one common element of in-situ methods of heavy oil recovery with the exception of cold production. Currently, steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) are being used commercially in the field where the oil''s viscosity is reduced by injecting steam. Thermal methods are energy intensive requiring vast volumes of water such that any improvement would be beneficial. Solvent extraction is one alternative requiring no water, the solvent is recoverable and reusable, and depending on the mode of operation the heavy oil is upgraded in-situ. Vapour Extraction (VAPEX) and enhanced solvent extraction (N-SolvTM) are two such methods. VAPEX and N-Solv reduce the bitumen''s viscosity via mass transfer and a combination of mass and heat transfer, respectively. A light hydrocarbon solvent (instead of steam) is injected into an upper horizontal well where the solvent mixes with the heavy oil, reduces its viscosity and allows the oil to drain under gravity to a bottom production well. The idea of using solvents for heavy oil extraction has been around since the 1970s and both VAPEX and N-Solv are patented processes. However, there is still much to be learned about how these processes physically work. Research to date has focused on varying system parameters (including model dimensions, permeability, heavy oil viscosity, solvent type and injection rate, etc.) to observe the effect on oil production from laboratory scale models. Based on an early mass balance model by Butler and Mokrys (1989) and an improvement by Das (1995), molecular diffusion alone cannot account for the produced oil rates observed from laboratory models. Until recently, very little progress had been made towards qualifying and quantifying the mass transfer mechanisms with the exception of the diffusivity of light hydrocarbons in heavy oil. Mass transfer can only be by diffusion and convection. Differentiating and quantifying the contribution of each is complex due to the nature and viscosity of the oil. The goal of this thesis is to investigate the mass transfer mechanisms during the solvent recovery of heavy oil.

Mentoring

release date: Jan 01, 2008
Mentoring
Mentoring is an intervention growing in popularity with a weak research foundation. This study combines mentoring and social skill training within a positive behavior support framework. Targeting a fourth-grade, Latino student at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders, this single-subject study looks at his ability to master a specific social skill. The mentor served to reinforce social skill learning through practicing, role-playing, and goal setting. The student was chosen using the Systematic Screening for Behavior Disorders and the social skill was created using the School Social Behavior Scales that identified social skill strengths and weaknesses. Student demonstration of the social skill was monitored two to three times each week. The student made progress toward mastery, but did not fully master the social skill. Additionally, pre- and post-School Social Behavior Scales showed increased social skill competency and decreased anti-social behaviors during the five-month mentoring intervention. Results indicated that short-term mentoring positively influenced the student''s general level of social competency but was not sufficient for the mastery of the selected social skill.

Beyond Habermas
Jurgen Habermas suggests an equitable society through the revitalization of an ideal public sphere and rational discourse. This is called into question, on the basis of the vast phenomenon of anti-Semitism and counter-capitalist violence, which is argued to stand beyond rational discourse and have its roots in a mythic consciousness.

Determinants and Implications of the Selection of Full Vs. Limited Tort Automobile Insurance in Pennsylvania and New Jersey

Determinants and Implications of the Selection of Full Vs. Limited Tort Automobile Insurance in Pennsylvania and New Jersey
The relationship between accident risk and tort right limitation has been the subject of considerable theoretical analysis and empirical inquiry. In Pennsylvania and New Jersey, resident drivers have the option of retaining full tort rights, or accepting limitations to those rights in exchange for lowered premiums. This study focuses on identifying differences in selected automobile accident claim experience measures of full and limited tort selectors at the aggregate and individual claim level. Empirical results indicate that limited tort selection is greater in counties where first-party claim frequency and severity are higher. Furthermore, limited tort selection is not uniformly associated with a greater assignment of the degree of driver fault, a more serious injury or a greater number of medical visits for all closed claim samples and state and survey year results differ substantially.

Shacking Up
Factories and Cities, begun more than two decades ago, is a poem about America in conflict—between the democratic and communal promise that ignited its original spirit and the dark psychological and economic realities that have come to burden not only many of its own people, but many of the wider world. It is a poem that explores the hungers and unfulfilled needs of the past for freedom, and perhaps identity, that haunt a nation propelled into a moment of world power to become a focus of humanity''s historical struggles. Just saw your poems in Minneapolis magazine they are wonderful your images so clear and etched like Whitman write a lot write let the images pour we need these images they are a social communal vision... great prophetic visions of the people. - Meridel LeSueur Jacobson has unusual gifts... He was the most brilliant student I have ever had... I am sure he will become one of the best poets in the country. - Thomas McGrath Factories and Cities embodies the venom and beauty that survived the ravages of what Elizabeth Bishop once called "our worst century so far" and it does so with both venom and beauty to spare. - Floyce Alexander
