The Placeholder

The Placeholder
The Placeholder is the story of a strong-willed young woman whose ideas were ahead of her time. She was born in Alabama in the 1800''s when women were treated like possessions. They were sometimes victims of abuse without recourse. They had no say, could not vote, own property, nor work outside their homes without the permission from a man. They were subjected to the rule of fathers, husbands, brothers, and male employers, if they were fortunate enough to gain employment. The main character, Evinaida Corbitt, fought to change these conditions. She joined a group called the Suffragettes. Their aim was to gain suffrage for women. In addition to being a part of the female equality struggle, she was also born a mulatto which brought on another type of discrimination. ABOUT THE AUTHORAnne James writes to encourage, uplift, and inspire a continuing belief in the living God.

"The death register of Patrick Co., VA was transcribed in March and May of 1991 at the courthouse in Stuart. Not all deaths were reported and many seem to have been recorded several months after the death, sometimes by a friend or neighbor. There were no deaths or births kept in Patrick County from 1896-1913." -- P. [1].

Modeling Mortuary Behavior Based on Secondary Burial Data from Carson Mound Group, Coahoma County, Mississippi
Abstract: Mortuary data can be a powerful analytical tool for understanding the social and symbolic systems of prehistoric people. Secondary burials provide particular insight because of the increased social handling and preparation necessary to produce multiple burials. The Carson Mound site contains a large Mississippian Era cemetery of secondary, bundle burials. Burial 4 at Carson is a mass burial with a minimum of 36 individuals, both males and females in nearly equal ratios, ranging in age-at-death from 2.5 years to 50 years old. The composition of the bundles appears to be commingled suggesting the use of a charnel house. The cemetery at the site is surrounded by a palisade, separating the mortuary area from the remainder of the site. The burial and site data from Carson suggest a possible social emphasis on the corporate group in the secondary burial ceremony.

The Epidemiology of Ixodes Scapularis and Borrelia Burgdorferi Collected from Pet Dogs in an Emerging Lyme Disease Risk Area of Southeastern Ontario, Canada
The major objectives of this thesis were to identify the tick species parasitizing companion dogs in southeastern Ontario, determine demographic and management factors associated with the carriage of I. scapularis and B. burgdorferi-positive ticks, and identify clustering of the carriage of these organisms in space, time, and space-time. Seven species of ticks from 543 companion dogs were collected from 20 participating veterinary hospitals. Ixodes scapularis were detected on 85.6% of parasitized dogs, and 7.5% of these dogs were carrying at least one B. burgdorferi-positive tick. The odds of I. scapularis parasitism was significantly greater in fall and spring compared to summer, with closer proximity to Lake Ontario, in female compared to male dogs, in dogs weighing over 30 kg, and in dogs that had not visited a farm. Significant spatial, temporal and space-time clusters were identified that were frequently consistent with surveillance data acquired from active tick surveillance.

Beyond Habermas
Jurgen Habermas suggests an equitable society through the revitalization of an ideal public sphere and rational discourse. This is called into question, on the basis of the vast phenomenon of anti-Semitism and counter-capitalist violence, which is argued to stand beyond rational discourse and have its roots in a mythic consciousness.

Determinants and Implications of the Selection of Full Vs. Limited Tort Automobile Insurance in Pennsylvania and New Jersey

Determinants and Implications of the Selection of Full Vs. Limited Tort Automobile Insurance in Pennsylvania and New Jersey
The relationship between accident risk and tort right limitation has been the subject of considerable theoretical analysis and empirical inquiry. In Pennsylvania and New Jersey, resident drivers have the option of retaining full tort rights, or accepting limitations to those rights in exchange for lowered premiums. This study focuses on identifying differences in selected automobile accident claim experience measures of full and limited tort selectors at the aggregate and individual claim level. Empirical results indicate that limited tort selection is greater in counties where first-party claim frequency and severity are higher. Furthermore, limited tort selection is not uniformly associated with a greater assignment of the degree of driver fault, a more serious injury or a greater number of medical visits for all closed claim samples and state and survey year results differ substantially.

Explaining the Rise of the Value Added Tax

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Explaining the Rise of the Value Added Tax
Over little more than half a century, the value added tax (VAT) has risen to become one of the world''s most dominant revenue instruments. However, very little is known about what has contributed to the VAT''s rapid rise. This dissertation contends that this gap is due in part to neglect and in part to the dominance of a received explanation that attributes the VAT''s rise to its merits. Upon closer examination, this explanation generally rests on the merits of an ideal or good VAT that is rarely, if ever, realised in practice by the real VATs that have actually been introduced. This dissertation contends that the discrepancy between the good VAT and real VATs is one of many factors which demonstrate the inadequacy of the merits-based explanation of the VAT''s rise. In light of the fact that it is real VATs that have actually risen, this dissertation proposes a new approach to explain the rise of these real VATs. To demonstrate the benefits of an alternative approach, the dissertation draws on policy analysis to examine two case studies, the introduction of a VAT in Australia and the resistance to VAT reform in the United States. The case studies reveal that merits are unable to account for both the decision to adopt a VAT and for the real VATs that get adopted. The analysis shows that an understanding of the histories and institutions that both enable and constrain policy choices is crucial to explaining the rise of real VATs. This dissertation continues, however, where most policy accounts end and focuses on the interaction between these local histories of VAT reform and key decisions relating to the legal design, administration and implementation of the VAT. This focus on law enables insights into real VATs that are lost in many policy accounts of VAT reform or that are ignored, downplayed or insufficiently accounted for in the conventional merits-based explanations of the VAT''s rise. This dissertation makes a significant contribution to both tax law and policy analysis. The challenge it presents to conventional understandings of the VAT''s rise, in turn, reveals new insights into the rise of this important revenue instrument. The law in this dissertation is at 31 January 2012.

Mass Transfer Mechanisms During the Solvent Recovery of Heavy Oil

release date: Jan 01, 2009
Mass Transfer Mechanisms During the Solvent Recovery of Heavy Oil
Canada has the second largest proven oil reserves next to Saudi Arabia which is mostly located in Alberta and Saskatchewan but is unconventional heavy oil and bitumen. The tar sands are found at the surface and are mined, yet 80% of the 173 billion barrels of heavy oil and bitumen exist in-situ according to the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP). Two factors inhibit the economic extraction and processing of Canadian heavy oil; its enormous viscosity ranging from 1000 to over 1 million mPa.s and the asphaltene content (high molecular weight molecules containing heavy metals and sulphur). Heavy oil and bitumen were only included in the reserves estimates through the efforts of Canadian enhanced oil recovery (EOR) research. Viscosity reduction is the one common element of in-situ methods of heavy oil recovery with the exception of cold production. Currently, steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) are being used commercially in the field where the oil''s viscosity is reduced by injecting steam. Thermal methods are energy intensive requiring vast volumes of water such that any improvement would be beneficial. Solvent extraction is one alternative requiring no water, the solvent is recoverable and reusable, and depending on the mode of operation the heavy oil is upgraded in-situ. Vapour Extraction (VAPEX) and enhanced solvent extraction (N-SolvTM) are two such methods. VAPEX and N-Solv reduce the bitumen''s viscosity via mass transfer and a combination of mass and heat transfer, respectively. A light hydrocarbon solvent (instead of steam) is injected into an upper horizontal well where the solvent mixes with the heavy oil, reduces its viscosity and allows the oil to drain under gravity to a bottom production well. The idea of using solvents for heavy oil extraction has been around since the 1970s and both VAPEX and N-Solv are patented processes. However, there is still much to be learned about how these processes physically work. Research to date has focused on varying system parameters (including model dimensions, permeability, heavy oil viscosity, solvent type and injection rate, etc.) to observe the effect on oil production from laboratory scale models. Based on an early mass balance model by Butler and Mokrys (1989) and an improvement by Das (1995), molecular diffusion alone cannot account for the produced oil rates observed from laboratory models. Until recently, very little progress had been made towards qualifying and quantifying the mass transfer mechanisms with the exception of the diffusivity of light hydrocarbons in heavy oil. Mass transfer can only be by diffusion and convection. Differentiating and quantifying the contribution of each is complex due to the nature and viscosity of the oil. The goal of this thesis is to investigate the mass transfer mechanisms during the solvent recovery of heavy oil.
