Judgments of Service Coordinator Practices and Transition-Related Outcomes for Children and Families

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Judgments of Service Coordinator Practices and Transition-Related Outcomes for Children and Families
The transition between IDEA Part C early intervention and Part B 619 preschool special education is one of many transitions experienced by young children with disabilities and their families. Transition is a continuous process, not a discrete event, and Part C service coordinators are charged with facilitating the early intervention transition process for children and families (IDEA, 636. 20 USC § 1436, 2004). An exploratory study was conducted to better understand service coordinator reported practices and child and family transition outcomes using case study research methodology. Eleven participating Part C service coordinators described judgments of their experiences with two families, a family for whom the transitions went well and a family for whom the transition did not go well. Results of an iterative qualitative process identified successful and unsuccessful outcomes, as reported by service coordinators, of family transition experiences, including continuity of service, parent preparedness, and parent satisfaction with preschool programs. Results of quantitative analyses showed that the consistent use of communication and collaboration service coordinator practices were related to reported successful transition-related outcomes for children and families. In contrast, practices implemented with less consistency showed reported transition outcomes to be less successful. Quantitative analyses of 22 family experiences indicated a higher proportion of families classified as low income and higher proportions or children with more severe disabilities experienced unsuccessful transitions.

"Whatever You Say, You Say Nothing"

release date: Jan 01, 2012
"Whatever You Say, You Say Nothing"
With a subpoena in one hand and a donor agreement in the other, what choice should an ethical archivist make? Since the legal battle over the Belfast Project--a collection of oral histories from Northern Irish paramilitaries about their involvement in the Troubles--at Boston College erupted in 2011, such a scenario has become a reality. With U.S. attorneys demanding access in the name of truth and justice, and historians advocating denial for the sake of scholarship and honor, the archival profession is facing some troubling legal and ethical issues. Regardless of the ultimate fate of the Belfast Project, the archival field will have to adapt to a new reality. This reality will have to consider the effects of the law and oral history practices on archives. Should archives be granted privilege recognized within the legal system? Should there be oversight for oral histories? Should archives offer privacy protections for third parties? How can the archival community address these issues? This thesis will use the Belfast Project to analyze legal and ethical issues facing archivists and explore what this means for the future of the profession.

Murder Runs in the Family
Mary Alice has spared nothing for her only daughter''s wedding -- from seventy-five yards of bridal train to gourmet food for over three hundred guests and enough glittering elegance to make Mary Alice think about finding herself a fourth rich husband to pay for it all. Their mysterious guest has taken a plunge from the ninth floor of the courthouse building -- an apparent suicide. But given the scandals a nosy genealogist might have uncovered, the sisters are betting that some proud Southern family is making sure their shameful secrets stay buried. . .along with anyone who tries to dig them up.

Parents' Knowledge and Attitudes about Immunization in India

release date: Jan 01, 2004
Parents' Knowledge and Attitudes about Immunization in India
Childhood immunization is acknowledged as being a crucial health intervention for children. Immunization rates of children may vary depending on their parents'' knowledge and attitudes about the issue. The focus of this study is on parents'' knowledge and attitudes about immunization, and employs Urie Bronfenbrenner''s ecological systems theory. A questionnaire was administered to 233 parents in India to explore the issues of parental immunization knowledge and attitudes. Correlates of parental knowledge and attitudes that were explored included gender, education, respondents'' immunization status, and children''s immunization status. Sources of parental knowledge about immunization were also examined. Overall, parents in this sample had a high level of awareness and positive attitudes about immunization. Parents'' knowledge about immunization was correlated with their attitudes on immunization. Gender was correlated with parents'' knowledge about immunization, but not their attitudes, with females having greater awareness about immunization than males. Parental education, parental immunization status, and children''s immunization status were positively correlated with both knowledge and attitudes about immunization. Doctors and health care settings were the major sources of information about immunization for parents in this sample. Implications for research, policy, and education are discussed.
