Personality Perception Accuracy Development Within Newly Acquainted Groups

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Personality Perception Accuracy Development Within Newly Acquainted Groups
The present research sought to investigate the effect of acquaintance on the accuracy of personality judgments and extend results to groups resembling families. Participants were college students ranging from 18 to 54 years of age enrolled in a ten week long "Psychological Assessment" research practicum. The study was designed to assess the ability of individuals to accurately judge the distribution of group members on each of the big five traits of neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness at three different time periods. During the first week participants made a first impression personality trait rating and then engaged in a getting-acquainted conversation with each target and made an additional rating. They then spent nine weeks interacting with targets in activities designed to represent interpersonal contexts that would traditionally occur in a family setting and made final personality ratings at the end of the ten week period. At zero acquaintance participants were able to accurately rank the targets on the traits of extraversion, openness, and neuroticism. After ten weeks of acquaintance-inducing activities participants were able to accurately assess the distribution of group members on each of the big five traits. There was a significant linear trend for increasing accuracy with further acquaintance for all traits with the exception of neuroticism. Implications for relationship development in families are discussed.

release date: Jan 01, 2003
How the Winter Olympics Enrich Community Legacies for Recreational Open Space
The Olympics have been a catalyst through the last century for community alteration including both the renovation of existing areas and building of new sites. This study focuses on the post-Olympic use of active and passive recreational open space infrastructure developed by Winter Olympic host cities. This study examines four Winter Olympics. The observation of a variety of Olympic venues has provided an opportunity to compare the differences in planning due to historical, cultural, and social variables. The comparison of these Olympic sites contributes to understanding of the probability of success or failure of post-game expectations for recreational open space use. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the Winter Olympics on the recreational open space infrastructure of host communities. Future Olympic sites can utilize these experiences as part of a planning effort to create a successful community recreational open space legacy.

The Ocular Paradigm of Frontier Fiction

release date: Jan 01, 2019
The Ocular Paradigm of Frontier Fiction
The Ocular Paradigm of Frontier Fiction: Visual Subjectivities of the Early New Zealand Novel introduces nineteenth-century novels of New Zealand into a discourse of new settlement fictional narratives. The novels chosen from the Nineteenth-century (NZETC) novels collection draw upon contemporary art theory in particular the recent works of American art theorist Caroline Jones whose Sensorium: Embodied Experience, Technology and Art (2006) and Eyesight Alone: Clement Greenberg's Modernism and the Bureaucratisation of the Senses (2005) provides a useful theoretical background in art, consumer society and material culture with which to consider visual perspectives as identity and cultural symbolism in early New Zealand fiction. The Ocular Paradigm is investigative of the early New Zealand novel's relationship to a colonisation of the senses as a literary product of Victorian diaspora directly related to an idea of sight as the ocular sense. As a sensory field discussion relative to the processes of colonisation The Ocular Paradigm is primarily concerned with settlement contexts of early New Zealand fiction which as a settler-colonial perspective are persuasive of unsettled or virtual settler experience. This attempt at an interdisciplinary discourse of art language and fiction aims to situate a critical perspective of sight as a constitutively-based dichotomous relationship between settler and environment.
