A Case Study of Instructors' Cultivation of Creative Thinking in an Adult Learning Environment

release date: Jan 01, 2022
A Case Study of Instructors' Cultivation of Creative Thinking in an Adult Learning Environment
The world is changing at a frenetic pace. Current creativity research and literature reveals how important it is for adults to live and work in environments conducive to creative learning and thinking. In education, we know that instructors influence the learning environment significantly, but we do not have a clear understanding of how instructors cultivate a climate for creative learning and thinking for adult learners. The purpose of this research was to understand how instructors cultivate a climate for creative learning and thinking for adult learners. This qualitative case study explored the experiences of a small group of instructors qualified to teach the Red Team Member Course, a unique four-week course that is part of the Red Teaming Education Program conducted by the Department of the Army. Three instructors volunteered from this group using convenient sampling. Four semi-structured interviews and three classroom observations were conducted with each instructor. Data from interviews, observations, course documents, and instructor artifacts were analyzed for emerging concepts, patterns, and themes using the theoretical framework of the investment theory of creativity. Results emerging from the findings confirm evidence of the six creativity constructs of the investment theory of creativity exists in the learning environments of the Red Team Member Course instructors. The convergence of the six creativity constructs, personality, motivation, knowledge, intellectual abilities, environment, and thinking skills, provides evidence of how instructors cultivate a climate for creative learning and thinking for adult learners in this unique learning environment. These findings have implications for professional development and training for adult educators and the learning experiences for adult learners.

The Connection Between Culture and Wellness for Indigenous Social Workers

release date: Jan 01, 2019
The Connection Between Culture and Wellness for Indigenous Social Workers
Reflecting on my own experience as an Indigenous social worker, and a thorough literature review of mostly other Indigenous researchers, I addressed the following questions: What can wellness look like for Indigenous social workers? Does connection to culture contribute to wellness for Indigenous social workers practicing from an Indigenous way of being? And does this connection to culture impact my approach to practice and how? By exploring the literature, current policy and legislation, and social work practice in this province, I will discuss how I navigate my work and how I ensure that my practice continues to be grounded in traditional ways of being. In addition, recent shifts in policy, legislation and practice, urge us to practice in a way that honours traditional systems of decision-making, planning and caring for children within child welfare in BC. Given this, this research is timely. I will explore cultural and permanency planning for children and youth in care and how my own experience plays a vital role in how I approach this area of practice. I will discuss the integral role of culture in my life and how it keeps me grounded to continue walking alongside the Indigenous community in a good way. Ultimately, though, the foundation of this research is centered around wellness. Wellness for Indigenous social workers directly impacts the work we do, how we approach children and families, and our ability to continue doing the work in a good way.

Fallibilism

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Fallibilism
What strength of evidence is required for knowledge? Ordinarily, we often claim to know something on the basis of evidence which doesn''t guarantee its truth. For instance, one might claim to know that one sees a crow on the basis of visual experience even though having that experience does not guarantee that there is a crow (it might be a rook, or one might be dreaming). As a result, those wanting to avoid philosophical scepticism have standardly embraced "fallibilism": one can know a proposition on the basis of evidence that supports it even if the evidence doesn''t guarantee its truth. Despite this, there''s been a persistent temptation to endorse "infallibilism", according to which knowledge requires evidence that guarantees truth. For doesn''t it sound contradictory to simultaneously claim to know and admit the possibility of error? Infallibilism is undergoing a contemporary renaissance. Furthermore, recent infallibilists make the surprising claim that they can avoid scepticism. Jessica Brown presents a fresh examination of the debate between these two positions. She argues that infallibilists can avoid scepticism only at the cost of problematic commitments concerning evidence and evidential support. Further, she argues that alleged objections to fallibilism are not compelling. She concludes that we should be fallibilists. In doing so, she discusses the nature of evidence, evidential support, justification, blamelessness, closure for knowledge, defeat, epistemic akrasia, practical reasoning, concessive knowledge attributions, and the threshold problem.

Theory and Method

Theory and Method
Knowledge of theory is essential to study, but it often seems quite abstract and distant from the ''real world''. Research methods, on the other hand, are strategies that allow us to gather evidence from the people around us to help explain social phenomena. This book explores these two key areas and shows new sociologists how they can understand, appreciate and use both theory and method. Written with student needs firmly in mind, this new edition begins by exploring the most important theories and debates that are essential to understanding sociology. It then goes on to examine the concepts, techniques and trends in research methods, and explains how these link back to theory. Whilst continuing to cover traditional ideas, debates and methodologies, the book has also been updated to address recent thinking and research techniques. It explains how sociologists have responded to contemporary developments in sociology, including postmodernists'' views on science, and introduces contemporary research techniques, such as cyberethnography. Exploring the basics of quantitative and qualitative methods, and explaining how to choose the right method, the book combines practical and theoretical coverage throughout. Part of the Skills-Based Sociology series, Theory and Method continues to encourage an active approach to learning. Each chapter uses a variety of tasks, activities and practice questions that promote critical thinking and develop interpretation, analysis and evaluation skills. It is an invaluable guide for those learning about theory and research for the first time.

Statistical Methods in Admixture Mapping

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Statistical Methods in Admixture Mapping
Genetic admixture occurs when two or more previously isolated populations combine to form an admixed population. The study of admixed populations can provide valuable insights into the complex relationship between environmental exposures, genetic background and complex traits. Gene mapping by linkage admixture disequilibrium, or admixture mapping, is a powerful approach for the identification of genetic loci influencing complex traits in ancestrally diverse populations. Admixture mapping leverages genomic heterogeneity among sampled individuals for improved gene discovery, where genetic loci with unusual deviations in local ancestry and that are significantly associated with a trait are identified. Admixture mapping can serve both as a primary method for discovery of novel genetic variants and as a complement to association mapping. In this dissertation, we thoroughly investigate the performance of existing statistical methods used for admixture mapping and we develop new methods that improve upon existing approaches. We also characterize the correlation structure of genetic loci in admixed populations and develop new genome-wide significance thresholds for admixture mapping under a range of models that should be useful for the future studies. Using real genotyping data in a large sample of African Americans, we find evidence of assortative mating, and in simulation studies with simulated phenotypes, we demonstrate that ancestry-related assortative can induce genome-wide inflation of admixture mapping test statistics and false positive associations. We also show how to appropriately adjust for this inflation and protect against spurious admixture associations. Finally, new linear and logistic mixed model methodology is developed for admixture mapping of quantitative and binary traits, respectively, in the presence of relatedness and population structure. We evaluate the performance of these methods through extensive simulation studies. The methods are applied to large-scale genetic studies of African American and Hispanic/Latino populations for genome-wide admixture mapping analyses where novel candidate loci for a variety of biomedical traits are identified.

Rectification of Tax Mistakes Versus Retroactive Tax Laws

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Rectification of Tax Mistakes Versus Retroactive Tax Laws
This article examines the potential conflict between the right of the provinces to determine property rights, including the equitable right of rectification, and the federal government''s right to enact retroactive tax legislation. It poses a hypothetical question: Does rectification provide the appropriate remedy for the "unfairness" of retroactive legislation to taxpayers who intend and plan their transactions to minimize or avoid tax? The article reviews the trend toward the judicial broadening of rectification remedies in tax cases, as well as perspectives on reliance on the rule of law and transaction costs to determine if and when rectification would be appropriate. The authors conclude that, in certain circumstances, a provincial court could and should rectify a tax plan to counter the effects of a retroactive tax that does not target abusive tax planning, such as Quebec''s proposed (and subsequently withdrawn) tax increase aimed at high income earners.

Human Rights and the Borders of Suffering

release date: Jul 19, 2013
Human Rights and the Borders of Suffering
This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This book argues for greater openness in the ways we approach human rights and international rights promotion, and in so doing brings some new understanding to old debates. Starting with the realities of abuse rather than the liberal architecture of rights, it casts human rights as a language for probing the political dimensions of suffering. Seen in this context, the predominant Western models of rights generate a substantial but also problematic and not always emancipatory array of practices. These models are far from answering the questions about the nature of political community that are raised by the systemic infliction of suffering. Rather than a simple message from ''us'' to ''them'', then, rights promotion is a long and difficult conversation about the relationship between political organisations and suffering. Three case studies are explored - the Tiananmen Square massacre, East Timor''s violent modern history and the circumstances of indigenous Australians. The purpose of these discussions is not to elaborate on a new theory of rights, but to work towards rights practices that are more responsive to the spectrum of injury that we inflict and endure. The book is a valuable and innovative contribution to rights debates for students of international politics, political theory, and conflict resolution, as well as for those engaged in the pursuit of human rights.

Backbone Power the Science of Saying No

Backbone Power the Science of Saying No
A wise man once said, "the key to failure is trying to please everybody." But before you can tell others NO, you have to able to tell yourself YES. Yes to embarking on a path of personal growth. Yes to ending the cycle of people-pleasing and self-neglect-finally and forever. Plainly put, you must develop a BACKBONE. Yes, it is a process and a journey. Yes, you will be tested. But on the other side of this crucible lies empowerment and respect. Let Dr. Anne Brown, a practicing therapist for the last twenty-five years, show you the way. Yes, it is worth it and no, you won''t be sorry.
