Judith Ann Thomas''s diary for 1961 follows part of her short life in Brisbane, Australia as she goes to dances and parties with various Brisbane musicians like Johnny Pickering & the Planets and visiting bands and singers including Peter Allen, the Allen Bros. and Lucky Starr and is invited to Queensland''s first O.B. of "Bandstand" from Lennons Broadbeach before she follows her dream as a showgirl at Chequers Nightclub with modelling.

At the turn of the twentieth century, West Virginia was in the throes of its formative years as a state. After more than two decades of alternating its government seat between Wheeling and Charleston and the destruction of the Gothic Revival Capitol in Charleston by fire in 1921, a building commission was formed to create a permanent Capitol that would display the young state''s pride, wealth, and sophistication to the entire nation. To achieve these goals, the legislature approved a budget of more than $6.5 million for the design and construction of this statehouse and the Commission appointed by the Governor hired internationally renowned Cass Gilbert as its architect. After much debate, an impressive site along the shore of the Kanawha River in Charleston was selected as its location. As one of the most influential architects of the early twentieth century, Cass Gilbert is known for structures such as the Woolworth Building, the United States Supreme Court building, and the Minnesota State Capitol. He believed architecture should reflect historic tradition and established social order, and this conservative philosophy is evinced within the classic form and proportions of the West Virginia State Capitol. As one of his final commissions, the West Virginia Capitol, with its golden "dome of majestic proportion," marble interiors, ornamental reliefs, and rich woodwork, remains a distinguished example of noble simplicity in American architecture. Cass Gilbert''s West Virginia State Capitol narrates the intricate story behind this architectural feat. Its close examination of the design, construction, and execution of this commission not only reveals the social, political, and financial climate of West Virginia during this period but also provides insight into the cultural importance of this public building. As Cass Gilbert''s design process is traced through unpublished documentation, drawings, and letters from several archives, the over one hundred accompanying photographs--many historical and others newly commissioned for this book--divulge the subtle beauty of the Capitol complex. At the same time, an extensive analysis of historical and contemporary illustrations and primary sources further elucidates the architectural value of this structure. This catalog, assembled by the National Gallery of Canada, includes studio portraits of soldiers and members of their families as well as official photographs that reflect the military and political objectives of the war.

In Coal in Our Veins, Erin Thomas employs historical research, autobiography, and journalism to intertwine the history of coal, her ancestors'' lives mining coal, and the societal and environmental impacts of the United States'' dependency on coal as an energy source. In the first part of her book, she visits Wales, native ground of British coal mining and of her emigrant ancestors. The Thomases'' move to the coal region of Utah—where they witnessed the Winter Quarters and Castle Gate mine explosions, two of the worst mining disasters in American history—and the history of coal development in Utah form the second part. Then Thomas investigates coal mining and communities in West Virginia, near her East Coast home, looking at the Sago Mine collapse and more widespread impacts of mining, including population displacement, mountain top removal, coal dust dispersal, and stream pollution, flooding, and decimation. The book''s final part moves from Washington D.C.—and an examination of coal, CO2, and national energy policy—back to Utah, for a tour of a coal mine, and a consideration of the Crandall Canyon mine cave-in, back to Wales and the closing of the oldest operating deep mine in the world and then to a look at energy alternatives, especially wind power, in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The caterpillar''s old cells represent our sin and unhealthy baggage that God must remove such as, bitterness, lack of self-worth, shame, pride, and unforgiveness. These must go to make room for what the butterfly needs to soar. We initially hate and even fight the process of retreating to our spiritual cocoon, only to find an intimacy, love, and power we never knew existed. Yes, God draws us into isolation, but once we stop kicking and screaming and surrender; we realize that we yearn to be with God as much as He desires to be with us. When God has His perfect way in the process, we emerge more powerful than we could have imagined, ready to pursue our God-given purpose and destiny.
