Prehistoric Sandals from Northeastern Arizona

release date: Apr 05, 2022
Prehistoric Sandals from Northeastern Arizona
During the late 1920s and early 1930s, archaeologists Earl and Ann Axtell Morris discovered an abundance of sandals from the Basketmaker II and III through Pueblo III periods while excavating rockshelters in northeastern Arizona. These densely twined sandals made of yucca yarn were intricately crafted and elaborately decorated, and Earl Morris spent the next 25 years overseeing their analysis, description, and illustration. This is the first full published report on this unusual find, which remains one of the largest collections of sandals in Southwestern archaeology. This monograph offers an integrated archaeological and technical study of the footwear, providing for the first time a full-scale analysis of the complicated weave structures they represent. Following an account by anthropologist Elizabeth Ann Morris of her parents'' research, textile authority Ann Cordy Deegan gives an overview of prehistoric Puebloan sandal types and of twined sandal construction techniques, revealing the subtleties distinguishing Basketmaker sandals of different time periods. Anthropologist Kelley Ann Hays-Gilpin then discusses the decoration of twined sandals and speculates on the purpose of such embellishment.

Changes in Adult Rat Superior Cervical Ganglion Following Axotomy

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Changes in Adult Rat Superior Cervical Ganglion Following Axotomy
The infiltration of immune cells into the superior cervical ganglion (SCG) following axotomy was characterized in the present study over short- and long-term survival times. OX-42, ED1, ED2, and Iba1 were used to label monocytes and macrophages associated with the SCG. Though immune cells infiltrated the SCG and associated with neuronal cell bodies, there was no evidence of apoptosis at any time point examined. These findings led to the hypothesis that the infiltration served a neuroprotective role at early time points following axotomy to promote cell survival and facilitate regeneration. However, assessment of tyrosine hydroxylase in the SCG and its target, the pineal gland, revealed only a slight recovery from the injury. We conclude that the immune cell infiltration served to promote cell survival in the SCG at early time points. However, regeneration of SCG axons apparently proceeds slowly, with little recovery at the late time points.

Living Well with Endometriosis

release date: Apr 04, 2006
Living Well with Endometriosis
A complete guide to the side–effects and treatments – both conventional and alternative – for endometriosis, from a respected name in the field who also suffers from endometriosis. Endometriosis is a debilitating reproductive and immunological disease that affects 7–10 million American women each year. The disease occurs when the same kind of tissue that lines the walls of the uterus grows outside the uterus in the pelvic cavity or some other area of the body, usually significantly affecting the woman''s fertility and often causing pelvic pain. And as with any condition that affects fertility, the results are often emotional and psychological as well as physical. As someone who suffers from endometriosis, and who has connections to a wide network of healthcare professionals, Morris is the perfect person to guide sufferers through diagnosis, treatment and living well with the condition. Like the previous titles in our successful Living Well series, this book will offer a holistic approach to living with the disease. The author will offer strategies for coping with the psychological aspects of endometriosis, including how best to tell others about the condition; treatment options including alternative and complementary treatment plans; dealing with infertility; and weighing the hysterectomy option. The author will draw on her relationship with fellow sufferers as well as medical professionals to help readers, making this the most comprehensive guide to endometriosis available. Kerry–Ann Morris was diagnosed with endometriosis in 1999. Since then she has become one of the most active members of the endometriosis community, and has started an outreach website for the disease. She has relationships with many fellow sufferers and experts in the medical community, making her the perfect author for a book on holistic treatment.

The Dust and the Blood

release date: Dec 01, 2005
The Dust and the Blood
My family has always been interested in politics. I inherited this interest from my father, who devoured the newspaper every night and was always well informed. My mother''s interest never waned until a series of strokes eroded her memory. So it was natural for me to maintain an interest in current events. My small book is about four fictional characters who join the Marines and then are caught up in the current war in Iraq. If my political interest shines through, well, I don''t apologize for that. I tried, however, to be fairminded. I have followed the war for years, and in fact have several scrapbooks packed with information about it. I have read the 9/11 report. So, after reading, listening, and studying, I decided to fashion a story that may interest the readers. In any case, I went forward with this and found the experience of following my four friends enjoyable and cathartic at the same time. I hope the reader does as well.
