Investigând însă un mare număr de familii afectate de asemenea probleme, şi neocolind nici o clipă caracterul dramatic al situaţiilor cu care se confruntă, Solomon arată că de foarte multe ori dragostea înfrânge prejudecăţile, ducând la întărirea legăturilor în cadrul familiei şi al comunităţilor create prin mişcări de solidaritate orizontală. „Timp de mulţi ani, identitatea mea principală a fost cea de istoric al tristeţii. Demonen van de middag is een ontroerend, persoonlijk, openhartig maar ook zeer informatief boek over depressie, dat de status van standaardwerk verwierf en dat het dus alleszins verdient om weer leverbaar te zijn. Andrew Solomon beschrijft niet alleen op prachtige wijze zijn eigen depressie, hij overstijgt het individuele perspectief door ook over het lot van anderen te schrijven de ervaringen van mensen in andere tijden en culturen. Solomon laat zien hoe moeilijk het is om depressie te definiëren. De verschillende soorten medicatie komen aan bod, evenals de therapeutische behandelmethoden en de effecten die de ziekte op een mensenleven kan hebben. Een belangrijk en adembenemend boek.

Una crónica sobre el final de la Unión Soviética y la nueva Rusia que emergía en los años noventa. Rusia, 1991. Tras el período de glasnost (apertura) y perestroika (reestructuración) impulsado por el último líder soviético, Gorbachov, la Unión Soviética se disuelve. Andrew Solomon viajó a Rusia a principios de los años noventa para presenciar los enormes cambios que experimentaba el país. Solomon analizó en este artículo la situación de la sociedad rusa, radiografiando con agudeza a las nuevas generaciones: artistas avant-garde, hombres de negocios y banqueros, miembros de la mafia rusa, políticos con nuevas ideas...
