Thuở nhỏ, cậu bé ham mê đọc sách, nhưng trình độ học vấn không cao. Pháp văn của ông rất tệ, ông thường bị trêu chọc ở trường vì chất giọng khôi hài. Napoleon chỉ tìm thấy mình khi vào quân đội, sau khi tốt nghiệp Trường Quân sự ở Paris và tìm được vị trí sĩ quan pháo binh.
