Capable of Honor

release date: Aug 18, 2014
Capable of Honor
The sequel to the Pulitzer Prize–winning novel is a political thriller examining the influence of the media on presidential elections. It is one of the most fundamental questions facing America today: How justifiably, or irresponsibly, do the volatile and unbiased American media—press, television and radio—attempt to interfere with, and control, the political process and the foreign policy of the nation? In a hotly fought Presidential primary, the news media fractures along ideological lines, supporting and distorting the candidates’ records, manipulating the news rather than covering it. Capable of Honor, the third novel in the grand, bestselling Advise and Consent saga, is a compelling blockbuster that shines a harsh and revealing spotlight on how the media shapes the news, guides public opinion, creates policy—and tries to shape history itself.

That Summer

That Summer
In That Summer, Allen Drury turns from the world of international politics to the private politics of Greenmont, an exclusive vacation colony high in the California Sierras where an intense love story is played out against tribal country-club mores and tragic social pressures. Greenmont is a millionaire’s hideaway, a super-civilized encampment for the privileged few, but dangerous currents run beneath its affluent exterior. Major Bill Steele arrives there as an outsider, lonely and shaken after a painful and humiliating divorce. He is fleeing his own personal demons, but the people of Greenmont have their own plans for him. They see him as the perfect final solution to the increasingly serious problem of their favorite daughter, Elizavetta—at 35, kind and pretty, but unmarried. Major Steele tries to establish a gentle friendship with Eliza, recognizing that her emotions are as complicated and defenseless as his own. The people of Greenmont make it clear to the Major that friendship is not enough. From nasty small skirmishes, Allen Drury draws his vicious little society into a ruthless battle of frightening proportions and violent consequences. That Summer is the most personal and passionate book from one of America’s master novelists.

Come Nineveh, Come Tyre
In one of two possible ends to the Pulitzer Prize–winning thriller series, the US president faces threats from half-way around the world—and much closer. Was it the Liberal Vice President Ted Jason, or staunch Conservative Presidential Candidate Orrin Knox? The answer to that question was so large that Pulitzer Prize–winner Drury had to write two novels, each exploring the full ramifications of one of two outcomes . . . In Come Nineveh, Come Tyre, China and the Soviet Union are waiting and watching for any sign of weakness from the untried Ted Jason, survivor of the assassination attempt that took the life of Orrin Knox and propelled him into the presidency. But now that he is in this position of power, is he up to the challenge of leadership in such a time of crisis? Or will he bend too far toward appeasement, at the cost of freedom around the world? Looking at the stakes for the United States against the backdrop of war, politics, and scandal, President Jason must play winner-take-all in this game of politics.

The National Tree-list Layer

release date: Jan 01, 2011
The National Tree-list Layer
The National Tree-List Layer (NTLL) project used LANDFIRE map products to produce the first national tree-list map layer that represents tree populations at stand and regional levels. The NTLL was produced in a short time frame to address the needs of Fire and Aviation Management for a map layer that could be used as input for simulating fire-caused tree mortality across landscapes. Simulated tree mortality estimates using the NTLL as model input provided acceptable results when compared with tree mortality simulations using field-sampled tree attribute data. Our results indicate that fire managers can expect simulated tree-mortalities using the NTLL to predict fire-caused tree mortality as well as field-measured plot data, especially during extreme wildfire events. Decision makers can use tree mortality maps that are produced using the NTLL to develop and support decisions such as where to place fuels treatments or where to most effectively position fire suppression resources.
