Early One Morning

release date: Sep 30, 2023
Early One Morning
This book is the result of a collaboration between the artist, Rebecca Forster and poet, Alan Baker. The art is evocative of Milan, where Forster has lived for thirty years, and European art from the Greeks onwards. Baker has reflected in his prose-poems what Forster has done in her artwork, attempting to mirror its craft, skill and imaginative reach. The poems have been translated into Italian and the Italian text follows the English version.

Indispensability

release date: Jun 08, 2023
Indispensability
Our best scientific theories explain a wide range of empirical phenomena, make accurate predictions, and are widely believed. Since many of these theories make ample use of mathematics, it is natural to see them as confirming its truth. Perhaps the use of mathematics in science even gives us reason to believe in the existence of abstract mathematical objects such as numbers and sets. These issues lie at the heart of the Indispensability Argument, to which this Element is devoted. The Element''s first half traces the evolution of the Indispensability Argument from its origins in Quine and Putnam''s works, taking in naturalism, confirmational holism, Field''s program, and the use of idealisations in science along the way. Its second half examines the explanatory version of the Indispensability Argument, and focuses on several more recent versions of easy-road and hard-road fictionalism respectively.

The Warrior's Path

The Warrior's Path
The knowledge in this book is derived from decades of instructing every branch of the U.S. military, as well as the Department of Defense, police agencies, SWAT teams, and elite-level bodyguards. The information and wisdom is also gleaned from over forty years spent in the martial arts and gaining over fifteen black belts in various arts. During that time, I have run numerous academies and been able to work as private protection for numerous VIPs, including the stars of film and TV shows such as The Walking Dead, Arrow, and others. The lessons I''ve learned have shown me that, despite the many obstacles that make life feel impossible at times, there is a way forward for anyone dreaming of becoming an elite-level performer, athlete, businessman, or anyone simply seeking a happier, fuller life. I have been low and discovered what it took to get back up. And I have had people from all across the spectrum come to me for guidance, and I have shown them the steps that I took, and that other masters before me took.We are all down at some point. It is inevitable in this life. But there is a process to recovery, steps that one can take to redeem one''s body, mind and spirit. This book is a collection of those steps, a set of guidelines I have found to be universally beneficial to those that have decided to opt out of the quitter''s mentality and finally seek a higher awareness and greater happiness. A sigma personality.I have taught soldiers, and soldiers have taught me. I have been in the company of killers and monks, and found that there are a surprising number of foundational habits that they all have in common, habits allowing them to reach a higher state and keep themselves sane, aware, healthy and clearheaded. In this book you will learn techniques on breathing and exercising more intelligently, but you will also see highlighted the many ways you can alter your thinking to reach greater physical and mental goals. This book is not just about how you should think differently about your body, but also how you should rethink your thinking, and begin a journey of self-discovery that, if you''re lucky, will last until your dying day. There is a way forward, a path one can take to rejuvenate themselves and ascend past the normal limitations set not just by others, but by oneself. It is not hopeless. You are not hopeless. There is a path forward. Let me show you.

The Personality of Paris

release date: Jan 28, 2021
The Personality of Paris
What was the personality of 19th-century Paris? To answer that question, this book eschews the conventional narrative and chronological route taken by most histories of Paris. Instead, it thematically analyses the complex personality traits of Paris from the onset of the Revolution of 1789 to the beginning of the Great War. Starting with the topographical and cultural legacies that late 18th-century Paris inherited from its foundation in pre-Roman and Roman times and from its medieval infancy and early-modern adolescence, The Personality of Paris unpacks the social and material complexity of the 19th-century city. It considers the role of immigration in the making of Parisians and in the city''s growth from half a million in 1801 to almost three million in 1911. It examines the making of its distinctive landscape through the construction of monuments and architectural icons, through its massive re-modelling by Napoléon III and Baron Haussmann, through its five world exhibitions, through its emphasis on food, fashion and leisure, and through the ways in which Parisians sought rural release from urban pressure. Finally, the book considers the self-harm done to the person of 19th-century Paris by revolutions and wars and the damage inflicted on it by 20th-century hubristic politicians and architects.

Missed Memories

release date: Jul 26, 2018
Missed Memories
A horrific accident introduces a frightening supernatural presence into a young woman''s life, altering both her past and future. Alexandra Drummond''s life is forever changed by a car wreck that kills her parents and sister. Ironically, recovering from her emotional and physical scars is not her biggest challenge. She is also haunted by Azrael, the angel of death. On the morning of the accident, Alex watches as Azrael takes the souls of her family. And the visions keep coming. A man with oily black hair in a pinstripe suit appears to Alex in the hospital, outside her high school, and in the woods near her campsite. She worries that she''s crazy, though Azrael appears to be just as threatened by her ability to see him. She confides in her doctor and friends and, while they appear to believe her, they are unable to help Alex banish death. Midway through the book, the narrative takes an unexpected twist and Alex''s recovery is overshadowed by the realization that she could bring her family back to life. But Azrael is determined to stop Alex''s meddling and she must enlist the help of her remaining family and friends if there is any hope for success. "The author''s plot twist is agreeably surprising and propels the supernatural story into the world of mystery" -Kirkus Reviews Missed Memories placed as a Semi-Finalist in the 2018 Faulkner Wisdom Competition

A Taste of Europe

release date: Jan 15, 2015
A Taste of Europe
This book had its beginnings as picture narrative to share our travel experiences with our family and friends. That way, they could follow our trip at their own pace rather than the unfashionable photo or slide night. Our adventurers are a middle aged Australian couple keen to share their travel experiences with anybody prepared to listen or more particularly, read about them. Our itinerary basically consisted of touring Switzerland, Southern France and Northern Italy. We had heard from numerous sources that Switzerland was everyones favourite place in Europe so our first flight destination was Zurich. From Zurich, we were off to beautiful Paris, onto Dijon to Chalon Sur Soanne where we travelled by river cruise boat to Arles and Avignon. From Avignon, we travelled to Nice by train where we made a ripper mistake to travel by hire car into Italy something that Id always wanted to do. We made our way to the beautiful Cinque Terre via Sestri Leventi and up north to gorgeous Bellagio on Lake Como in the foothills of the Italian Alps. From there, we went back to Milan, onto unbelievable Venice, down to Florence, Sienna and finished our adventure in Rome. The book is a light hearted diary of our trip with lots of meaningful pictures. It is also littered with travel tips and advice for the unwary traveller such as :- Dont ever again forget to take the vegemite Dont ever again forget to pack the shorts Dont ever again hire a car overseas. The train services in Europe are fantastic. A smooth comfortable and very fast ride. Dont ever again take a large suitcase Dont ever again fly long haul routes in anything smaller than an A380 Airbus I must travel by first class rail wherever possible Anyway, the book seemed to be popular with those who had read it so I thought that I would publish it professionally and share our experiences with the wider public. I hope that you enjoy reading it.

The Edge of Science

release date: Jan 17, 2013
The Edge of Science
How did the universe begin and how will it end? What happens to us when we die? Do intelligent beings exist elsewhere in our galaxy and beyond? The Edge of Science addresses these and many other questions that have bewildered and perplexed humanity for centuries. Some of these enigmas have been solved through the ingenuity of their investigators; others remain a mystery and have given rise to equally bizarre speculations. From the Tunguska explosion of 1908 to the enigma of the Moon''s origin, from the possibility of time travel to the search for zero-point energy, author Alan Baker examines the many theories that have been presented to account for the world''s most enduring mysteries. Each chapter deals with an enigma that has caused wonder, excitement or fear to all who have pondered it, including: the discovery of strange fossils that hint at an unknown early history of humanity; anomalous structures photographed on the Moon and Mars; the mystery of dark matter and dark energy; and strange disappearances of people and objects. Join Alan Baker as he embarks on a strange, stimulating and sometimes frightening journey to The Edge of Science.

While exploring the lighthouse, now automated and deserted, one of the team discovers a manuscript written by one of the relief keepers, a man named Alec Dalemore.
