Reflections on War, Diplomacy, Human Rights and Liberalism

release date: Dec 01, 2020
Reflections on War, Diplomacy, Human Rights and Liberalism
For most people, the idea that extremist ideologies glorify themselves through warfare, and commit crimes against humanity and genocide, is the natural extension of their moral and philosophical failings. As this volume outlines, liberal democracies such as Australia, and others, also glorify in war and they may also, at various times, engage in, support, or turn a blind eye to crimes against humanity or genocide. However, liberal democracies such as Australia, the US, and the UK, among others, routinely present themselves as arbiters of liberal values, defenders of human rights, and guardians of virtue. This book explores the obvious contradiction between the ideals of liberalism and how liberal democracies ignore, and at times even justify, their failure to uphold the principles they espouse.

Independent Nation

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Independent Nation
This book traces the evolution of a new independence of thought displayed by the Australian government towards foreign policy, and in particular towards its relations with Indonesia, after the Second World War. During the period 1901-1941 two distinct ideologies had formed over Australian strategic policies: pro-Imperial and self reliance. The Second World War challenged previously sacrosanct expectations regarding Australia''s military relationship with the United Kingdom. With the Fall of Singapore in 1942 Australia was forced to contemplate the implications of national selfdefence and its own regional interests. Shaped by the experiences of war, alternative foreign and strategic policies were explored that challenged previous assumptions. The emergence of widespread Indonesian nationalism after the Second World War meant that the possible regional security benefits of Dutch rule in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) diminished. Yet Dutch failure to provide security against Japanese aggression during the Second World War was exacerbated by their post-war misjudgements and inflexibility toward the Indonesian Republicans. These two factors greatly influenced Australian post-war policies toward the NEI. From an initial position of concerned neutrality, the Chifley government shifted to supporting the Indonesian nationalists. This new independence of thought was shaped by the failure of the pro-Imperial ideal in 1942, diplomatic reconstruction (1942-1945) and a post-war ambition of middle power diplomacy through the United Nations. This book is based on Adam''s MA Hons thesis at Macquarie University, Sydney. Based at the Research School of Social Sciences (Department of History) at the Australian National University, Canberra, he is currently researching Australian foreign debates and attitudes in the 1950s and 1960s.

Uttering the Holy

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Uttering the Holy
Poetry. In this, his second collection of poetry, Adam Hughes continues to weave a tapestry of language. In these poems are found words that illuminate, words that cheer and fulfill, words that inspire longing, words that commemorate, and words that revel in the glory of uncertainty. In his pursuit of the holy, Hughes utters words both profound and common, romantic and rational, hopeful and hopeless. Through it all the voice of the Other whispers and all of creation sings through children, grasshoppers, men on fire, escaped hijackers, and a host of other voices all uttering the holy. Adam Hughes''s poems take place in a world on fire where the shadows creep east and mercy is found in a lion''s mouth. These poems listen attentively to the world, to a child''s breath in a baby monitor, to the wind, to God''s slow exhale. Nothing escapes Hughes''s gaze. He populates his work with remoras, moths, flying foxes, five-legged grasshoppers, and wasps dying on garage floors. There''s never enough time to decipher ''the unwritten words on the wall, '' but these poems keep singing to a God that gave us all the grace He could spare.--Traci Brimhall

This Is Rugby

release date: Aug 15, 2022
This Is Rugby
If you ask the average American what they know about the game of rugby, they will likely mention the stereotypes - violent, alcohol-fueled, meatheads, etc. What most don''t know about rugby is its inclusivity, diversity, culture of camaraderie, and openness to every shape and size. This is the story of American rugby culture. After interviews with over 400 rugby clubs, individuals, and organizations from the most casual social amateur up to Olympians, professionals, and national team members, Adam Hughes has written the authoritative book on American rugby. From business leaders like Mark Cuban, military leaders like General HR McMaster, rugby stars like Naya Tapper and Todd Clever, and the weekend warriors in places like Des Moines, Iowa and Eagle Rock, California, these stories tell about a culture and a community unlike any other. In a country that has never been more factional and divided, rugby offers a rare antidote - it doesn''t matter your race, your religion, your gender, your sexuality, your political ideology - in rugby you''re accepted. This book is a love letter to rugby, a repository for the community''s stories, and a study in diversity, inclusivity, and competition. This book is about how we interact with each other and how one collision sport can teach us about peace and harmony. This book is about the women and men who struggle, love, fight, and overcome. It''s a book that goes beyond the pitch and reveals lessons about living in a society with respect and civility. This is rugby.
