The Yearling

release date: Jan 01, 2001
The Yearling
The classic Pulitzer prize-winning novel read by the star of the TV movie.
It all started the day the rattlesnake bit Jody Baxter's pa, Penny, in the arm. The doe and her fawn just happened to be nearby. Penny shot the doe and used its liver to try to draw the deadly venom out of his veins. By the time they got Penny home, he was near dead. And as much pain as Jody was in for his pa, he hurt for the orphaned fawn, too. So he went back the next day and brought the newborn home.
The magic of The Yearling has touched and enchanted us for nearly six decades. Here's the joy, sadness and hardships faced by the Baxter family in the heart of the wild, dangerous Florida scrub. Here's the story of the hunt for the vicious marauding bear, Slewfoot, the deadly winter floods, and the running battles with the rough and rowdy Forrester clan. But here, too, is the beauty and wonder of the land: the humming bees, fragile lavender, sweet bay and magnolias.
And, at last, here is the tale of a boy and the yearling fawn he would come to love and cherish, and name Flag, after its small white tail -- a boy who becomes a man, as he learns to make the brutally hard choices that life sometimes demands of us all.

The Complete Tales & Poems of Winnie-the-Pooh

release date: Oct 01, 2001
The Complete Tales & Poems of Winnie-the-Pooh
In 1926, the world was introduced to a portly little bear named Winnie-the-Pooh. Along with his young friend, Christopher Robin, Pooh delighted readers from the very beginning. His often befuddled perceptions and adorable insights won the hearts of everyone around him, including his close group of friends. From the energetic Tigger to the dismal Eeyore, A. A. Milne created a charming bunch, both entertaining and inspirational. These simple creatures often reflected a small piece of all of us: humble, silly, wise, cautious, creative, and full of life. Remember when Piglet did a very grand thing, or Eeyore's almost-forgotten birthday?

Gorgeous watercolor illustrations from Ernest H. Shepard appear in all their glory. With beautiful colors and simple lines, these images hold their own as classics. The tales, filled with superb story lines and lessons, will continue to capture the hearts of new generations.

The Wind in the Willows

Everything is new for the simple but stalwart mole. Never before had he seen a river, taken a boat ride, or encountered the woods. But this is nothing compared to what awaits him when he gets tangled up in the escapades of the indomitable Mr. Toad, the society-hating Badger of Wild Wood, and the easy-going Water Rat! Motorcars, gypsies, jailbreaks, and a weasel rebellion are all in store for these intrepid animals. Beyond mischievous life adventures, the story conveys the typical turn of twentieth-century life in Britain and the struggle between the noisy, common way of life and the genteel.

A Tale of Two Cities

release date: Mar 01, 2005
A Tale of Two Cities
A Tale of Two Cities (1859) is a novel by Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. With well over 200 million copies sold, it ranks among the most famous works in the history of fictional literature. The novel depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralized by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same time period. It follows the lives of several protagonists through these events. The most notable are Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton. Darnay is a French once-aristocrat who falls victim to the indiscriminate wrath of the revolution despite his virtuous nature, and Carton is a dissipated British barrister who endeavours to redeem his ill-spent life out of his unrequited love for Darnay's wife, Lucie Manette. The 45-chapter novel was published in 32 weekly instalments in Dickens' new literary periodical titled All the Year Round. In May 1859 through December 1859, Dickens also republished the chapters as eight monthly sections in green covers. Dickens' previous novels had appeared only as monthly instalments. The first weekly instalment of A Tale of Two Cities ran in the first issue of All the Year Round on 30 April 1859. The last ran thirty-one weeks later, on 25 November.
