As water supplies in the American West become increasingly strained by growing populations and threats of drought and climate change, water managers and governments are working to maximize water-use efficiency. With well over half of municipal water being used on outdoor irrigation, improved landscape water efficiency has been a clear candidate for conservation messaging. Because social norms play a significant role in what conservation behaviors individuals adopt voluntarily, conservation messaging strategies often try to influence and shift norms in favor of improved behaviors. A clear understanding of the existing norms, demographics, and cultural values of an area is essential to tailoring relevant and effective conservation messages. The purpose of this research was to identify landscape norms in Washington County, Utah and whether residents had perceived a shift in norms over time toward desert-adapted landscapes. We also researched whether social norms played a significant role in the types of landscapes residents preferred. To answer these questions, we surveyed three populations: visitors to a popular, local conservation garden, participants in conservation programs and workshops, and members of a homeowner association. Based on their responses, we found that residents did perceive a shift in landscape norms toward desert landscapes. The vast majority of respondents also indicated approval of homeowners using desert landscaping in their neighborhoods, regardless of their own landscaping decisions. However, little social pressure exists to motivate homeowners to adapt to a specific neighborhood norm. As such, conservation strategies in Washington County should emphasize the approval and growing use of appropriate water-conserving landscape norms. To increase effectiveness, conservation messaging should address the needs of specific demographics. For example, because we found that homeowners with children tend to prefer larger amounts of lawn, conservation messaging needs to demonstrate how child-friendly alternatives to lawn-dominant landscapes can meet the needs of children. In addition to suggestions for improving voluntary behavior changes, we discuss how policies can help to accelerate changes in landscape norms.

"This study seeks to demonstrate that sensitivity towards the dynamics of an honor and shame culture can enhance our comprehension of certain laws and narratives in the Torah. The application of the anthropological studies of honor and shame cultures have been successfully applied to the area of New Testament studies, but very little research has been conducted with applying these studies to the Torah. In this study, we will develop a model for understanding honor and shame culture based on the current research in the Mediterranean culture and examples of its existence in the Torah. The development of this model will also include a discussion of the vocabulary and semantic ranges associated with honor and shame, as well as the Israelite peculiarities in application of honor and shame principles. This model will then be applied to select laws and narratives in the Torah; the rape laws and the Genesis 34 narrative, the laws of the suspected adulteress, and the laws and narratives surrounding the kinsman redeemer institution. This application will demonstrate a deep complexity in the selected text that exhibits a concern for preservation of honor and covering of shame. This successful application should encourage future research into this field of study."--Abstract.

Creativity is a widely studied yet poorly understood phenomenon of the human brain. Several methods have been used to study creative cognition on a neural level, but few have been successful at identifying a specific mechanism of action. Recent work involving divergent thinking tasks has identified a promising lead in creativity neuroscience which suggests that neural coupling between two commonly anti-correlated brain networks, the default mode network (DMN) and the executive control network (ECN) may be largely implicated in creative cognition through a dual-process model. The purpose of this project is to determine a causal relationship between DMN-ECN functional connectivity and creative cognition using a neurofeedback training program. Participants were tested on consecutive days using the go/no-go task and the alternative uses task (AUT). During the first session, participants completed these tasks and either a neurofeedback training task or a sham neurofeedback task. During the second session, participants only repeated the go/no-go task and the AUT. Statistical analysis revealed that participants who underwent the neurofeedback training task exhibited significantly higher levels of DMN-ECN neural coupling during the AUT in the second session. These neural changes were accompanied by significant increases in mean originality ratings of responses generated in the AUT when compared to ratings from the first session. There was no apparent effect on reaction time observed in the go/no-go task nor the AUT between sessions for the experimental group, but the control group showed significantly decreased mean reaction time in both tasks. Cumulatively, these effects provide support for the role of DMN-ECN neural coupling in creative cognition.

As hip-hop musicians continue to prosper financially and achieve unprecedented levels of success and longevity in the industry, understandings of the hip-hop career have shifted. Hip-hop musicians attempt to translate their cultural capital into financial profit by leveraging their respective personas into marketable brands and lifestyles that act as non-musical, career extending strategies. The thesis investigates how the hip-hop music career commences, the activities and individuals required to nurture a career, and the criteria that ultimately determine success. When entering contractual employment relationships, how do hip-hop musicians navigate intricate relations of power, retain or give up important authorial rights, and understand the attainment of economic self-sufficiency in relation to autonomy? Ultimately, I suggest that many contemporary hip-hop musicians develop and structure their careers based on previously established models and recognizable patterns, and that popular musicians in other genres face similar struggles for autonomy. For hip-hop musicians, unlike those working in other genres, there is a linkage between possessing large amounts of economic capital and high evaluations of cultural capital, and establishing a long-term career is the most effective way of achieving success in these interrelated areas.

A substantial challenge in ligand design for protein-ligand interactions is the accurate prediction of changes in binding energy associated with small structural variations in ligands. In a previous study analyzing the binding energetics of varied hydrophobic surface area in peptide mimics, we observed an unfavorable gauche conformation in the pY+3 sidechain of an inhibitor of growth receptor bound protein 2 (Grb2) SH2 domain. To investigate the change in binding energy from alleviating of torsional strain in the protein-ligand complex, constrained ligand analogues containing a cyclopropane ring were designed to reduce the energetic penalty associated with adopting a gauche conformation, potentially enhancing binding enthalpy. Additionally, the cyclopropane ring serves to preorganize the ligand by positioning the terminal substituent in a similar fashion to the bound state of the flexible control, potentially enhancing binding entropy. Thus, the proposed constrained ligands present a unique opportunity to enhance both binding enthalpy and entropy with a single modification. The synthesis of three constrained peptide mimics will be discussed. Additionally, optimization of the growth and expression of Grb2 SH2 for binding analysis with the prepared ligands will be discussed.
