Stay Down, Old Abram

release date: Jun 29, 2004
Stay Down, Old Abram
From two short stories and fragments of others comprising basically an outline by the author, grows a masterpiece--after 14-months, a most lucid novel, perhaps the best account of a cross-cultural form of intolerance, in historical-fiction in a long time. Based on actual events, "Stay Down, Old Abram, " the author paints two streets, one white, one black--in this tragic game where moods and friction bring out the roots of deeply idealistic rejection and suppressed tendencies, all embedded in the narrative. One might even conclude, this story is not all that much different than what took place in Iraq''s Abu Ghraib prison, outside of Baghdad recently, although in a thinner angle: yet in both cases we see undisciplined soldiers working in sensitive spots. The time and place is West Germany, mid-l970''s. By Rosa Pe aloza Translator, Writer "I had read some of Dennis Siluk''s books and I liked them very much, the stories and topics touched in each one. I could say that reading them they carry you inside the story and you begin to dream and dream as if you were part of the story." Nancy De Valencia English Teacher

The In-between People

release date: Jan 01, 2004
The In-between People
They are the last generation to have experienced (as children) traditional life before contact with European cultures in the early 1950s and the first generation to experience the cultural change brought about by that contact - these are ''the in-between people''. As parents, they want their children to experience the best of both the high technology world of today, and the language and culture of their traditional world. The In-Between People studies how the Kaugel-speaking people of Papua New Guinea approach the tension that results from the intersection of the old and new cultures. Specifically, the author focuses on Kaugel pre-primary bilingual education, a nonformal mother-tongue education program whose purpose is to increase the children''s success in formal English education and also to increase their appreciation of and participation in their ethnic language and culture. He approaches his work with three purposes in mind: understanding how the Kaugel pre-primary program has been maintained and expanded, understanding Kaugel parents'' attitude toward their children''s education, and describing how community members resolve the tension between maintaining their mother tongue and succeeding in English-speaking schools. Dennis Malone has lived and worked in Papua New Guinea since 1967, first as an educator in primary schools, later as a mother-tongue literacy specialist for the Kaugel Literacy Project, and as a mother-tongue education advisor to the PNG Department of Education. Since receiving his Ph.D. in Education from Indiana University in 1998 he has served as an International Literacy Consultant for SIL International in the Asia area.

Opportunities for Making Wood Products from Small Diameter Trees in Colorado

release date: Jan 01, 2002
Opportunities for Making Wood Products from Small Diameter Trees in Colorado
Colorado''s forests are at risk to forest health problems and catastrophic fire. Forest areas at high risk to catastrophic fire, commonly referred to as Red Zones, contain 2.4 million acres in the Colorado Front Range and 6.3 million acres Statewide. The increasing frequency, size, and intensity of recent forest fires have prompted large appropriations of Federal funds to reduce fire risk and improve fire protection. Experimental ecological restoration studies using thinning and prescribed fire have been conducted at several locations across the State during the past 5 years to determine if high-risk areas could be treated to improve forest health and reduce the potential for catastrophic fires. These studies established that 80 to 96 percent of the trees removed to improve ecological conditions were between 5 and 11.9 inches in diameter. Some trees 12 inches and larger in diameter had to be removed to properly apply ecological prescriptions and typically comprised 4 to 18 percent of the trees removed. The projects studied had profit margins of 1 percent (Pines Partnership), 6 percent (Mixed Conifer Project), a loss of $78,000 (Chessman Reservoir-Trumbull Project), and required subsidies of $779 per acre (Fox Run) and $679 per acre (Air Force Academy). A search for opportunities to use small diameter trees from these projects was conducted as part of an effort to improve the financial feasibility of forest restoration. A previous study, "Wood Use in Colorado at the Turn of the Century" (Lynch and Mackes 2001), describes in detail the various types and quantities of wood products used in the State and identifies where products came from. Using this study, the authors identified potential products that might be manufactured from small diameter trees removed in restoration thinnings. The potential opportunities for using wood are listed in two categories: (1) existing products, processes, and technology, and (2) new products, processes, and technology. Products are arranged within each category in order of increasing complexity of processing and technology. Estimates of the potential retail market value for each product are presented. Examples of existing product opportunities include Christmas trees, mine props, firewood, posts and poles, rough sawn lumber and timbers, and oriented strandboard. Examples of new products and processes include structural roundwood, biomass energy, and wood pulp. The report concludes that future restoration programs must be designed to provide a consistent supply of raw material to processors. It also recognizes that there is no single product that will utilize all small diameter trees from Red Zone areas. Instead, a stable, diverse wood industry appears to be the most desirable future.

Body Music

Body Music
Body Music reveals the remarkable depth and range of Dennis Lee as a poet and thinker. In eleven ground-breaking essays, Lee explores the experience of body music: the dance of energy from which poems arise. Whether he is discussing rhythm as a form of cosmology, examining children''s verse, or probing what it means to worship without belief, his explorations constantly fascinate and entertain. At a time when literary theory can be highly abstract, Body Music is anchored in a writer''s working experience. It opens up dramatic new ways to think about words and the world.

Lord Lyndhurst

release date: Jan 01, 1994
Lord Lyndhurst
John Singleton Copley, Jr., Baron Lyndhurst (1772-1863), was a major figure in nineteenth-century British politics yet one of very few important politicians of his day not to have a modern biography until now. Although historians have relegated Lyndhurst to a minor role, the three-times Lord Chancellor of England remained an influential force until his nineties. A mentor of the young Benjamin Disraeli, Lyndhurst presided over the House of Lords and was also a leading member of the Cabinet. Lord Lyndhurst: The Flexible Tory, is perhaps the first nonpartisan biography of a man who was controversial among his contemporaries, being labeled an opportunist, a careerist, and a turncoat. Although Lyndhurst claimed to have burned his personal papers, author Dennis Lee located them at Cambridge University, at the Glamorgan County Hall in Cardiff, Wales, and among private collections.
