The Shepherd of Hermas

The Shepherd of Hermas
The Shepherd of Hermas (sometimes just called The Shepherd) is a Christian literary work of the 1st or 2nd century, considered a valuable book by many Christians, and considered canonical scripture by some of the early Church fathers such as Irenaeus. The Shepherd had great authority in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Along with the Apocrypha, it was bound with New Testament in the Codex Sinaiticus, and it was listed between the Acts of the Apostles and the Acts of Paul in the stichometrical list of the Codex Claromontanus. The work comprises five visions, twelve mandates, and ten parables. It relies on allegory and pays special attention to the Church, calling the faithful to repent of the sins that have harmed it. The book was originally written in Rome, in the Greek language, but a Latin translation was made very shortly afterwards. Only the Latin version has been preserved in full; of the Greek, the last fifth or so is missing. The shepherd is one of the meanings that was probably attached to some figurines of the Good Shepherd as well as a symbol for Christ, or a traditional pagan kriophoros. On the Soul and the Resurrection

On the Soul and the Resurrection
St. Gregory of Nyssa (c 335 – after 394) was a Christian bishop and saint. He was a younger brother of Basil the Great and a good friend of Gregory of Nazianzus. His significance has long been recognized in the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Eastern Catholic and Roman Catholic branches of Christianity. Some historians identify Theosebia the deaconess as his wife, others hold that she, like Macrina the Younger, was actually a sister of Gregory and Basil. Gregory along with his brother Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nazianzus are known as the Cappadocian Fathers. They attempted to establish Christian philosophy as superior to Greek philosophy. A Treatise on Baptism

A Treatise on Baptism
This is an English translation of a discourse of St. Basil, in which he exhorts the many who in his age delayed baptism, although convinced of the truth of Christianity, to hasten to receive it. The readers will no doubt be gratified to hear, as it were, this venerable Doctor of the East, after fifteen centuries, explaining the nature and effects of baptism, enforcing its necessity, and pointing to the vain pretexts on which it was by many postponed. His discourse will be particularly felt by some, who in our day likewise postpone, from time to time, the reception of this most necessary Sacrament.

Spiritual Warfare with the Saints

release date: Aug 09, 2021
Spiritual Warfare with the Saints
Christian writer, C.S. Lewis once made the point that people tend to either obsess over demons or deny their existence entirely-and the devil is equally pleased either way. The Bible is clear. Our battle is not with flesh and blood but with spiritual forces (Eph. 6:12). At the same time, however, the Bible makes it clear that the evil forces, devils and demons, are powerless in comparison to God. If God is for us, who can be against us? Even the demons shudder in the presence of God (James 2:19).

Clare was born in Assisi, Italy as the eldest daughter of Favorino Scifi, Count of Sasso-Rosso and his wife Ortolana. Ortolana was a very devout woman who had undertaken pilgrimages to Rome, Santiago de Compostela and the Holy Land. Later on in her life, Ortolana entered Clare''s monastery, together with Agnes, Clare''s sister. Clare was always devoted to prayer as a child. When she turned 15 her parents wanted her to marry a young and wealhy man but she originally wanted to wait until she was 18. But when she was 18 she had heard Francis''s preachings. Those preachings were beginning to change her life. He told her she was a chosen soul from God. Soon on Palm Sunday when people went to grab their palm branches she stayed. On that very night she ran away to go follow Francis. When she got there he cut her hair and dressed her in a black tunic and a thick black veil. Clare was put in the Benedictine nuns near Bastia and was almost pulled by her father for originally he wanted her to marry at age of 15. Clare and her sister Agnes soon moved to the church of San Damiano, which Francis himself had rebuilt. Other women joined them there, and San Damiano became known for its radically austere lifestyle. The women were at first known as the "Poor Ladies". San Damiano became the focal point for Clare''s new religious order, which was known in her lifetime as the "Order of San Damiano." San Damiano was long thought to be the first house of this order, however, recent scholarship strongly suggests that San Damiano actually joined an existing network of women''s religious houses organized by Hugolino (who later became Pope Gregory IX). Hugolino wanted San Damiano as part of the order he founded because of the prestige of Clare''s monastery. San Damiano emerged as the most important house in the order, and Clare became its undisputed leader. By 1263, just ten years after Clare''s death, the order became known as the Order of Saint Clare. A Month of Prayer with St. Francis of Assisi

A Month of Prayer with St. Francis of Assisi
As much as any of the saints, Saint Francis of Assisi—born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone—is known for his profound piety. He is especially remembered for how he renounced worldly possessions in order to focus on spiritual things. At great personal risk, he attempted to convert the Sultan in Egypt to end the Crusades. His Franciscan Order grew quickly in his time and has since birthed several other orders that persist to this day. He is known particularly for his love of the Eucharist. According to tradition, he received the stigmata while in prayer in 1224, making him the first recorded saint to receive this blessing.

On the Holy Trinity

release date: Feb 15, 2014
On the Holy Trinity
This classic work, On The Trinity, was translated into several languages and played an important role in the spreading of the ideals of Eastern and Western Christianity. Augustine of Hippo, also known as Augustine, Saint Augustine, St. Austin, St. Augoustinos, Blessed Augustine, or St. Augustine the Blessed, was Bishop of Hippo Regius (present-day Annaba, Algeria). He was a Latin-speaking philosopher and theologian who lived in the Roman Africa Province. His writings were very influential in the development of Western Christianity. According to his contemporary, Jerome, Augustine “established anew the ancient Faith.” In his early years he was heavily influenced by Manichaeism and afterward by the Neo-Platonism of Plotinus. In the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion, he is a saint and pre-eminent Doctor of the Church, and the patron of the Augustinian religious order; his memorial is celebrated 28 August, the day of his death. He is the patron saint of brewers, printers, theologians, the alleviation of sore eyes, and a number of cities and dioceses. Many Protestants, especially Calvinists, consider him to be one of the theological fathers of Reformation due to his teaching on salvation and divine grace. In the Eastern Orthodox Church he is blessed, and his feast day is celebrated on June 15th. Among the Orthodox, he is called “Blessed Augustine”, or “St. Augustine the Blessed.”

Praying with the Saints: Prayers on Repentance

release date: Oct 27, 2021
Praying with the Saints: Prayers on Repentance
The New Testament speaks of repentance as a gift from God. Christ came so that he might "give" the gift of repentance to Israel (Acts 5:31), to the Gentiles (Acts 11:18), and unto all that they might proceed from repentance into a mature knowledge of the truth (2 Timothy 2:25). Yet, many things get in the way of repentance. Out of pride, many of us cling to our sins and justify our misdeeds to ourselves. Out of shame, many of us will cover up or ignore our sins as if we could simply pretend they were not a burden. Furthermore, out of the lusts of the flesh, we avoid repentance so that we might continue to indulge what we rebelliously know to be sin. This booklet offers many meditations and prayers on repentance. Perhaps there is a particular sin you have in mind for which you seek forgiveness. Or, as is the case for all of us, you might simply be struggling with the ongoing temptations of the flesh. This book, God willing, might help draw you closer to an attitude of the heart befitting of penance-that is, confession, repentance, satisfaction, and forgiveness.

However, in her short life, she inspired many nuns in the Carmelite community of Lisieux, Normandy. She was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1925 and wrote much regarding the path of humility and holiness befitting a Christian. She was acquainted with temptation and tribulation and learned to find joy in many sufferings. She was one of the most honored saints throughout the twentieth century, and her words still ring true today, inspiring Christians, young and old, who might hope to follow her path of piety.

A Month of Prayer with St. Catherine of Siena

release date: Dec 09, 2020
A Month of Prayer with St. Catherine of Siena
St. Catherine of Siena was born during an outbreak of the Plague in Siena in 1347. She was brought up in the faith and especially after her own sister died at the age of sixteen found herself committed to pursuits of piety. She joined the Dominican order and, at the age of twenty-one, had what she described as her "mystical marriage" to Christ. Today, we know St. Catherine mostly through the many letters she wrote to her fellow brothers and sisters in the faith and also through a collection of visions recorded largely by her fellow nuns as she grew close to death. These meditations combine her letters with several of these revelations wherein she speaks in the first person as though speaking from God himself. In her letters and meditations she speaks at great length about obedience, the centrality of Christ crucified to the faith, and how virtue should be pursued in our quest to grow in intimacy toward God.

He lived during the time of schism, when the head of the church was in contention. Benedict was chosen to help decide between the claims on the papacy - ultimately siding with Pope Innocent II rather than the Antipope Anacletus II. Benedict played a significant role in unifying the church and protecting its unity against the threat that this dispute signified.

Lais of Marie De France

release date: Jan 11, 2020
Lais of Marie De France
** A Christian Classic ** ** Active Table of Contents ** This book comes complete with a Touch-or-Click Table of Contents, divided by each section. The Lais of Marie de France are a series of twelve short narrative Breton lais by the poet Marie de France. They are written in the Anglo-Norman and were probably composed in the late 12th century. The short, narrative poems generally focus on glorifying the concept of courtly love through the adventures of their main characters. Despite her stature in Anglo-Norman literature and medieval French literature generally, little is known of Marie herself, though it is thought that she was born in France and wrote in England. Marie de France''s lais, told in octosyllabic, or eight syllable verse, are notable for their celebration of love, individuality of character, and vividness of description – hallmarks of the emerging literature of the times. Five different manuscripts contain one or more of the lais, but only one, Harley 978, a thirteenth century manuscript housed in the British Library, preserves all twelve. It has been suggested that if the author had indeed arranged the Lais as presented in Harley 978, that she may have chosen this overall structure to contrast the positive and negative actions that can result from love. In this manuscript, the odd lais — "Guigemar," "Le Fresne," etc. — praise the characters who express love for other people. By comparison, the even lais, such as "Equitan," "Bisclavret" and so on, warn how love that is limited to oneself can lead to misfortune. The Harley 978 manuscript also includes a 56-line prologue in which Marie describes the impetus for her composition of the lais. In the prologue, Marie writes that she was inspired by the example of the ancient Greeks and Romans to create something that would be both entertaining and morally instructive. She also states her desire to preserve for posterity the tales that she has heard. Two of Marie''s lais – "Lanval," a very popular work that was adapted several times over the years (including the Middle English Sir Launfal), and "Chevrefoil" ("The Honeysuckle"), a short composition about Tristan and Iseult – mention King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Marie''s lais were precursors to later works on the subject, and Marie was probably a contemporary of Chrétien de Troyes, another writer of Arthurian tales. Poems of St. Therese of Lisieux

Poems of St. Therese of Lisieux
St. Therese was born in Alencon, France, January 2, 1873. Therese, a singularly precocious, charming and beautiful child set her heart upon entering the convent at the age of fifteen. Her wish was granted nearly to the letter, or on April 9, 1888, when only a little more than three months past her fifteenth birthday, she was received into the Carmelu00adite monastery of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and of the Immaculate Conception, at Lisieux, France. There she lived for nine years a life of remarkably joyous and childlike or angelic holiness and there September 30, 1897, she died. Her name in religion was Sister Teresa of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face. In her character she so exemplified the loveliness and the sanctity of the Child Jesus Himself, and to such a singular degree throughout her whole short life did she love and serve her Lord, that the Mother Prioress bade her write her memories, which, with entire openness and simple obedience, she did.

He was on familiar terms with the Julio-Claudian family, advising Augustus''s grandnephew, the future emperor Claudius, as a young man not long before 14 AD in a letter to take up the writing of history. Livy and Augustus''s wife, Livia, were from the same clan in different locations, although not related by blood.
