THE KOPJE FARM

release date: Jan 01, 2022
THE KOPJE FARM
Those stirring times are days of the past, and the unsheathed sword has given place to the ploughshare, but weird pictures of bloodshed among man and beast are indelibly impressed on Jack Lovat''s brain, and his dreams of to-day are often linked with the scenes enacted during the "White Men''s War" beneath the glittering Southern Cross. Jack Lovat was not a Colonial bred and born, for his boyhood had been passed amid the peaceful surroundings of a Highland sheep farm in dear old Scotland. Mr. Lovat, Jack''s father, had been a laird of substantial means, and was descended from a line of ancestors in whose veins coursed a strain of royal blood; but bad times came, and Jack, instead of proceeding to Loretto, took passage as a member of the Lovat family, in a Castle liner bound for Cape Town. Jack was seventeen at the time our story opens. Rather above the middle height, he was broad, and his bronzed features testified to his three years'' sojourn on the South African veldt. The Kaffirs on his father''s ostrich farm, near Orangefontein, had dubbed him "The Strong-armed Baas," only a month later than his advent to the holding locally known as "The Kopje Farm." Pete, the Kaffir who acted as native foreman to Mr. Lovat, declared that "Baas Jack" could fell the biggest ox ever inspanned in a Cape waggon, which of course was an exaggeration of a very bad type, but to which statement Pete and the other "boys" employed on the estate pinned implicit faith. The dogs of war had been let loose in South Africa, but Orangefontein had not been troubled as yet. Ladysmith, Kimberley, and gallant little tin-roofed Mafeking had been besieged and relieved, but round the homes of the settlers near Ookiep and Orangefontein tranquillity reigned...

A Body in Fukushima

release date: Jun 01, 2021
A Body in Fukushima
On March 11, 2011 one of the most powerful earthquakes in recorded history devastated Japan, triggering a massive tsunami and nuclear meltdowns at three reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant complex in a triple disaster known as 3.11. On five separate journeys, Japanese-born performer and dancer Eiko Otake and historian and photographer William Johnston visited multiple locations across Fukushima, creating 200 transformative color photographs that document the irradiated landscape, accentuated by Eiko''s poses depicting both the sorrow and dignity of the land. The book also includes essays and commentary reflecting on art, disaster, and grief. From the Preface THIS IS A BOOK OF FUKUSHIMA. THIS IS A BOOK OF WAILING AND UPSET, inhabiting time after March 11, 2011 and imagining time before then. This is a book of the irradiated landscape of Fukushima. This is a book of violence, and of disasters, fast and slow. This is a book of people, mountains, fields and the sea. This book is A Body in Fukushima: the body of a performer—an immigrant artist from Japan, and the body of a historian who is also a photographer, and the body of the land itself. We traveled together to Fukushima five times between 2014 and 2019. Eiko performed in the disrupted landscapes. Bill photographed the performances. Together we selected the photographs and writings for this book, and Bill wrote the captions. The year 2021 marks the tenth anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. The Timeline in the book extends to include a deeper history that is part of this tragedy and this place. And Places Visited shows the coastline where we performed and photographed. We hope that these images allow you to enter Fukushima, to feel and smell it. —EO & WJ

The Life of Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston

release date: Nov 24, 2015
The Life of Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston
One ordinarily thinks of General Albert Sidney Johnston merely as the Confederate general who lost his life at the Battle of Shiloh April 6, 1862. In reality, Johnston was a general in three different armies: the United States Army, the Republic of Texas, and the Confederate States Army. Compared to his service in these armies, his time in the Confederate Army was relatively short, and he died too soon in the war to have established a martial standing along with a Lee or a Jackson. Johnston had participated in a wide range of fighting, seeing action in the Black Hawk War, the War for Texas Independence, the Mexican War, the Mormon War in Utah, and finally the War Between the States, commonly called the "American Civil War." Highly regarded as one of the best generals in the Confederate army by President Jefferson Davis, he has the distinction of being the highest-ranking Union or Confederate officer killed during "Civil War." Who better to write the biography of this exemplary soldier than his son, William Preston Johnston? The younger Johnson''s biography of his father, published in 1878, is unrivaled to this day. It is the "go to" book for anyone wishing to study the life of this remarkable man and those like him who did so much to forge the nation into one that would stretch entirely across the continent. This is a long book, but still one that will hold the reader''s interest. It is also a "keeper" as a reference book to the student of American history, particularly of the 19th century wars. Foreign phrases have been translated by the editor and explanatory notes have been added as an aid for the contemporary reader. Anyone interested in history or adventure will enjoy this book.

The Life of General Albert Sidney Johnston : His Service in the Armies of the United States, the Republic of Texas, and the Confederate States

release date: Jun 15, 2014
The Life of General Albert Sidney Johnston : His Service in the Armies of the United States, the Republic of Texas, and the Confederate States
Today Albert Sidney Johnston (1803- 1862) is one of the most overlooked generals of the Civil War, but in April 1862 he was widely considered the Confederacy''s best general. After graduating from West Point, where he befriended classmates Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee, Johnston had a distinguished military career that ensured he would play a principal role in the Civil War. The fact that he was friends with Davis didn''t hurt either, and near the beginning of the war Johnston was given command of the Western Department, which basically comprised the entire Western theater at the time. The Confederates were served poorly in that theater by incompetent officers who Johnston and the South had been saddled with, and from the beginning of the Civil War the Confederates struggled to gain traction in the battlegrounds of Kentucky and Missouri. After critical Confederate setbacks at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in early 1862, Johnston concentrated his forces in northern Georgia and prepared for a major offensive that culminated with the biggest battle of the war to that point, the Battle of Shiloh. On the morning of April 6, Johnston directed an all out attack on Grant''s army around Shiloh Church, and though Grant''s men had been encamped there, they had failed to create defensive fortifications or earthworks. They were also badly caught by surprise. With nearly 45,000 Confederates attacking, Johnston''s army began to steadily push Grant''s men back toward the river. As fate would have it, the Confederates may have been undone by friendly fire at Shiloh. Johnston advanced out ahead of his men on horseback while directing a charge near a peach orchard when he was hit in the lower leg by a bullet that historians now widely believe was fired by his own men. Nobody thought the wound was serious, including Johnston, who continued to aggressively lead his men and even sent his personal physician to treat wounded Union soldiers taken captive. But the bullet had clipped an artery, and shortly after being wounded Johnston began to feel faint in the saddle. With blood filling up his boot, Johnston unwittingly bled to death. The delay caused by his death, and the transfer of command to subordinate P.G.T. Beauregard, bought the Union defenders critical time on April 6, and the following day Grant''s reinforced army struck back and pushed the Confederate army off the field.

Security for Linux on System z

release date: Jan 10, 2013
Security for Linux on System z
No IT server platform is 100% secure and useful at the same time. If your server is installed in a secure vault, three floors underground in a double-locked room, not connected to any network and switched off, one would say it was reasonably secure, but it would be a stretch to call it useful. This IBM® Redbooks® publication is about switching on the power to your Linux® on System z® server, connecting it to the data and to the network, and letting users have access to this formidable resource space in a secure, controlled, and auditable fashion to make sure the System z server and Linux are useful to your business. As the quotation illustrates, the book is also about ensuring that, before you start designing a security solution, you understand what the solution has to achieve. The base for a secure system is tightly related to the way the architecture and virtualization has been implemented on IBM System z. Since its inception 45 years ago, the architecture has been continuously developed to meet the increasing demands for a more secure and stable platform. This book is intended for system engineers and security administrators who want to customize a Linux on System z environment to meet strict security, audit, and control regulations. For additional information, there is a tech note that describes the best practices for securing your network. It can be found at: http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/tips0981.html?Open

A Collection of Thoughts About Life

release date: Jul 25, 2012
A Collection of Thoughts About Life
How this little book came about. Upon discharge from hospital on the second occasion after a battle with a brain tumour, my wife Ruth and I set about the first appropriate step in cleaning out the cupboard of our lives, as we termed it. Up until this point, we had paid little attention to the stresses in our lives, just accepting what is. Our first priority was to habitually harness more the developed awareness from our life experiences. We focused more on the idiosyncrasies of any acquaintance, looking past their persona to allow a greater accuracy of potential conformity to the collective personalities. This before any would make a profound entrance into our lives, opposed to having an ill-conceived come-all policy, to be whipped (metaphorically) by bad manner, lack of empathy or dishonesty. For some people, aggression seemingly forms a central part of their existence, creating their own epiphenomenon with its stress. Peace is an element of life that should be available for all to rightfully inherit. Many never achieve this state, as motivational paralysis or a shallow belief in themselves can keep them suspended in continued dysfunctional unhappiness. The majority of people would agree that they deserve to be treated well, but there are many who expect high esteem to be bestowed on them. They give very little in return, while playing out their different versions of an inferiority/superiority complex or ignorance on others. The subject headings in this book are well known. The content presents a simple and brief reminder to the aspects of mans inherent or contrived nature. To sit awhile in silence and reflect on the condition of ones own life is to enable the beginning, if needed, toward assuagement of a better dawn, no matter where one is placed in life. Pull the contemptuous thorn of others from your mind by the ability of distance. Ian Johnston

A Transition to Advanced Mathematics

release date: Jul 27, 2009
A Transition to Advanced Mathematics
A Transition to Advanced Mathematics: A Survey Course promotes the goals of a "bridge'''' course in mathematics, helping to lead students from courses in the calculus sequence (and other courses where they solve problems that involve mathematical calculations) to theoretical upper-level mathematics courses (where they will have to prove theorems and grapple with mathematical abstractions). The text simultaneously promotes the goals of a ``survey'''' course, describing the intriguing questions and insights fundamental to many diverse areas of mathematics, including Logic, Abstract Algebra, Number Theory, Real Analysis, Statistics, Graph Theory, and Complex Analysis. The main objective is "to bring about a deep change in the mathematical character of students -- how they think and their fundamental perspectives on the world of mathematics." This text promotes three major mathematical traits in a meaningful, transformative way: to develop an ability to communicate with precise language, to use mathematically sound reasoning, and to ask probing questions about mathematics. In short, we hope that working through A Transition to Advanced Mathematics encourages students to become mathematicians in the fullest sense of the word. A Transition to Advanced Mathematics has a number of distinctive features that enable this transformational experience. Embedded Questions and Reading Questions illustrate and explain fundamental concepts, allowing students to test their understanding of ideas independent of the exercise sets. The text has extensive, diverse Exercises Sets; with an average of 70 exercises at the end of section, as well as almost 3,000 distinct exercises. In addition, every chapter includes a section that explores an application of the theoretical ideas being studied. We have also interwoven embedded reflections on the history, culture, and philosophy of mathematics throughout the text.

The Use of PAS in the New Testament
This book examines in detail the use of the pronominal adjective πας («all, each, every») in the Greek New Testament, focusing on how syntactical patterns and the semantic value of words or phrases it modifies are factors determining its sense and scope. These findings are applied to the interpretation of several debated passages in the New Testament.

The Mysticism of The Cloud of Unknowing
The Cloud of Unknowing was the work of an unknown 14th-century English writer with a powerful message of God''s unconditional love in the face of despair. Johnston''s theological treatment of this and other works by the same writer makes a conscious comparison with Oriental ways of contemplation.

Mystical Theology

Mystical Theology
From the earliest centuries there has existed a Christian theology of mysticism, defining the state which Bernard Lonergan called a "being in love with God." St. John of the Cross wrote such a theology for the sixteenth century, calling it "the science of love." Now, William Johnston, one of the great spiritual writers of our time, attempts to do the same for the twenty-first century.

The Modern Epidemic

release date: Jan 01, 1995
The Modern Epidemic
Through a historical and comparative analysis of modern Japan''s epidemic of tuberculosis, William Johnston illuminates a major but relatively unexamined facet of Japanese social and cultural history. He utilizes a broad range of sources, including medical journals and monographs, archaeological evidence, literary works, ethnographic data, and legal and government documents to reveal how this and similar epidemics have been the result of social changes that accompanied the process of modernization. Johnston also shows the ways in which modern states, private organizations, and individual citizens have responded to epidemics, and in the process reexamines the concept of the epidemic itself, showing that epidemics must be thought of not only in medical and biological terms but in political, social and cultural terms as well.
