The Air Battle of Malta has been the topic of countless books since the end of World War Two and has always been a subject of great interest to the author who has produced a detailed narrative, primarily from the Allies perspective, of Malta''s aerial defense (and offense) from June 1940 to September 1941. This volume deals with the early years of the siege imposed upon Malta when small numbers of RAF Sea Gladiators and Hurricanes, occasionally accompanied by a handful of Fleet Air Arm Fulmars, blunted Axis aerial attacks against the islands at a time when an embryonic Malta-based strike force began to emerge that would develop to become the scourge of Axis supply convoys across the Mediterranean. An additional aspect of the author''s approach to this book is his fresh examination of the camouflage schemes worn by the combatant aircraft involved in this battle, particularly those employed by the British. Using evidence garnered from a number of sources, including interviews and correspondence with veterans and by reinterpretation of selected photographs, reappraisals of the colors worn by many of the aircraft are considered.

Mais là n’est pas le principal intérêt du roman. Oui, on y trouve des histoires de deals, d’amitié perdue, de souffrance, de sexe et de relations superficielles. Bien sûr il y a les motels pourris, les crises de manque, les cliniques de méthadone et la recherche permanente du « high ». Et non il n’y a aucun romantisme, aucune morale, et pas de retour des ténèbres vers la lumière. Mais ce douloureux et croissant besoin de dope, qui vous fait pactiser avec le Diable, est aussi une quête sans fin pour trouver un sens à sa propre vie. Et c’est ce qui propulse Du bleu sur les veines bien au-delà du traditionnel parcours fléché « addiction / rédemption ». L’aventure d’un musicien-écrivain qui cherche en lui-même ce qu’il y a de plus précieux : un fragment d’amour oublié mais intact-amour-propre, amour pour les autres. Et l’amour autorise l’espoir, même si aucun message explicite dans ce sens ne nous est fourni par cette histoire magnifiquement racontée où Tony O’Neill, sans effort apparent et avec beaucoup de finesse, nous fait apprécier le pouvoir et la grâce de l’écriture. Car après la seringue c’est le stylo qui a changé sa vie, cette fois en bien. Comme le dit Charles Bukowski dans Love is a dog from hell : « les gens ne sont pas bons les uns envers les autres ». On pourrait ajouter : les gens sont rarement bons envers eux-mêmes. Du bleu sur les veines nous le rappelle page après page.
