Managing a Nonprofit Organization in the Twenty-First Century

Managing a Nonprofit Organization in the Twenty-First Century
Since this classic work was originally published in 1984, there have been major shifts in the nonprofit world -- the growth of more profit-oriented ventures, the overhaul of accounting rules, new partnerships, and an emphasis on customer-oriented service and leadership. In easy-to-understand language, Thomas Wolf explains how to cope with these changes and deal with the traditional challenges of managing staff, trustees, and volunteers.

A Comparison of Four Approaches to the Calculation of Conservation Laws

release date: Jan 01, 1999
A Comparison of Four Approaches to the Calculation of Conservation Laws
Abstract: "The paper compares computational aspects of four approaches to compute conservation laws of single differential equations or systems of them, ODEs and PDEs. The only restriction, required by two of the four corresponding computer algebra programs, is that each DE has to be solvable for a leading derivative. Extra constraints may be given. Examples of new conservation laws include non-polynomial expressions, an explicit variable dependence and conservation laws involving arbitrary functions. Examples involve the following equations: Ito, Liouville, Burgers, Kadomtsev-Petviashvili, Karney-Sen-Chu-Verheest, Boussinesq, Tzetzeica, Benney."

A Study of Genetic Algorithms Solving a Combinatorial Puzzle
Abstract: "The suitability of Genetic Algorithms (GAs) to solve a combinatorial problem with only one solution is investigated. The dependence of the performance is studied for GA-hard and GA-soft fitness functions, both with a range of different parameter values and different encodings."

G 2 Perfect Fluid Cosmologies with a Proper Conformal Killing Vector
Abstract: "We study the Einstein field equations for spacetimes admitting a maximal two-dimensional abelian group of isometries acting orthogonally transitively on spacelike surfaces and, in addition, with at least one conformal Killing vector. The three-dimensional conformal group is restricted to the case when the two-dimensional abelian isometry subalgebra is an ideal and it is also assumed to act on non-null hypersurfaces (both, spacelike and timelike cases are studied). We consider both, diagonal and non-diagonal metrics and find all the perfect- fluid solutions under these assumptions (expect those already known). We find four families of solutions, each one containing arbitrary parameters for which no differential equations remain to be integrated. We write the line-elements in a simplified form and perform a detailed study for each of these solutions, giving the kinematical quantities of the fluid velocity vector, the energy-density and pressure, values of the parameters for which the energy conditions are fulfilled everywhere, the Petrov type, the singularities in the spacetimes and the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson- Walker metrics contained in each family."

Programs for Applying Symmetries of PDEs

release date: Jan 01, 1995
Programs for Applying Symmetries of PDEs
Abstract: "In this paper the programs APPLYSYM, QUASILINPDE and DETRAFO are described which aim at the utilization of infinitesimal symmetries of differential equations. The pupose of QUASILINPDE is the general solution of quasilinear PDEs. This procedure is used by APPLYSYM for the application of point symmetries for either calculating similarity variables to perform a point transformation which lowers the order of an ODE or effectively reduces the number of explicitly occurring independent variables in a PDE( -system) or for generalizing given special solutions of ODEs/PDEs with new constant parameters. The program DETRAFO performs arbitrary point- and contact transformations of ODEs/PDEs and is applied if similarity and symmetry variables have been found. The program APPLYSYM is used in connection with the program LIEPDE for formulating and solving the conditions for point- and contact symmetries which is described in [4]. The actual problem solving is done in all these programs through a call to the package CRACK for solving overdetermined PDE-systems."

Academic Preparation in the Arts

Academic Preparation in the Arts
Prepared as a sequel to the College Board Educational Equality Project''s "Academic Preparation for College: What Students Need To Know and Be Able To Do," this book examines curricular ideas, teaching strategies, arts learning rationales, and related issues. The arts are defined as separate fields of study which offer a distinctive contribution to high school students'' preparation for college. Creating or performing art works, learning to analyze and evaluate art, and knowing art works of various periods and cultures can teach students to understand and pursue quality, to be expressive and responsive, to exercise their imaginations, and to be interested in the visions and imaginations of others. Teachers must help students develop the special knowledge, sensitivity, and skills that training in the arts require. Selected arts courses are presented to illustrate how students might achieve the goals of production and performance skills, abilities in analysis and evaluation, and knowledge of the cultural contexts and historical development of the arts. The development of outstanding arts courses and the utilization of arts education to assist students in achieving basic competencies in reading, writing, speaking, listening, mathematics, reasoning, and studying is described. Art teachers are encouraged to develop curricula which achieve and maintain excellence in arts education for all high school students. (JHP)
