Thomas Aquinas as Reader of the Psalms

release date: Jan 01, 2000
Thomas Aquinas as Reader of the Psalms
Often overlooked but rich in inspiration, Aquinas'' Commentary on the Psalms is part of his lectures on the Bible delivered to students. Composed near the end of his life, this work reflects his mature thought on such central issues as Christ, prayer, preaching, grace, and good works. In his study of this important text, Thomas Ryan shows how the Postilla super Psalmos offers new insight into Aquinas'' spirituality. Combining literary, thematic, and comparative questions, Ryan reveals how this work differs from those more familiar to modern students of Aquinas, and he articulates its significance for the study of spirituality. Aquinas believed the Psalms to be a book that contained all of theology, revealing so much about Christ that it resembles New Testament gospels more than Old Testament prophetic books. Ryan identifies patterns in Aquinas'' confirmatory use of scripture and his use of christological quotations. He shows how Super Psalmos reflects the evocative way in which Aquinas draws out meaning for his students'' lives and pastoral practices, and reveals how as a teacher and theologian Aquinas was intent on moving his students -- often through dramatic language -- both to imitation of Christ and to action inspired by prayer. The first treatment of Super Psalmos in English, Ryan''s work recovers Aquinas as an accomplished biblical and pastoral theologian and not simply a dispassionate expositor of theology, reestablishing him as an important resource for spirituality. It offers a better understanding of Aquinas'' life and work as it suggests new potential for assessing other Thomistic writings -- and also invites us to reconsider the deeper meaning of the Psalms.

The Turkish president will not negotiate. The Turkish military will not allow the bus to cross the border. The hijackers will kill themselves and their hostages if they cannot escape. Jeff knows it''s down to him to rescue his friend. Joining forces with US special agent Reason Johanson, he faces his toughest test yet: a race against time to track down the bus before it reaches the border. Secondary Physical Education Avoidance and Gender

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Secondary Physical Education Avoidance and Gender
Our goal was to locate and evaluate the barriers that impact and cause females to avoid secondary elective physical education courses. We sought to find answers to stop the further decline of female enrolment in secondary physical education by looking into curricula, program and instructional variables. Anecdotal evidence informed this study which was very much exploratory, building upon several key facts. First, Ontario (Canada) secondary students are only required to take one credit (course) in physical education in order to graduate and second, most students take the required physical education course in grade nine which is their first year of high school. Following this there is an average of 10% fewer females in every physical education class in the province of Ontario and only an average of 12% are enrolled in physical education each year. Several issues were identified and explored including self-confidence; motivation; perceived value of physical activity; opportunities for physical activity; marking scheme; competition; co-ed classes; teaching approach; and peers as possible problems and solutions.

The Microwave Opacity of Ammonia and Water Vapor: Application to Remote Sensing of the Atmosphere of Jupiter

release date: Jan 01, 2008
The Microwave Opacity of Ammonia and Water Vapor: Application to Remote Sensing of the Atmosphere of Jupiter
The object of this research program has been to provide a baseline for microwave remote sensing of ammonia and water vapor in the atmosphere of Jupiter through laboratory measurements of their microwave absorption properties. Jupiter is not only the largest planet in our solar system, but one of the most interesting and complex. Despite a handful of spacecraft missions and many astronomical measurements, much of Jupiter s atmospheric dynamics and composition remain a mystery. Although constraints have been formed on the amount of certain gases present, the global abundances and distributions of water vapor (H2O) and ammonia (NH3) are relatively unknown. Measurements of H2O and NH3 in the Jovian atmosphere to hundreds of bars of pressure are best accomplished via passive microwave emission measurements. For these measurements to be accurately interpreted, however, the hydrogen and helium pressure-broadened microwave opacities of H2O and NH3 must be well characterized, a task that is very difficult if based solely on theory and limited laboratory measurements. Therefore, accurate laboratory measurements have been taken under a broad range of conditions that mimic those of the Jovian atmosphere. These measurements, performed using a newly redesigned high-accuracy system, and the corresponding models of microwave opacity that have been developed from them comprise the majority of this work. The models allow more accurate retrievals of H2O and NH3 abundances from previous as well as future missions to Jupiter and the outer planets, such as the NASA New Frontiers class Juno mission scheduled for launch in 2011. This information will enable a greater understanding of the concentration and distribution of H2O and NH3 in the Jovian atmosphere, which will reveal much about how Jupiter and our solar system formed and how similar planets could form in other solar systems, even planets that may be hospitable to life.
