This is a family saga set in West Yorkshire spanning 3 generations of the Crowther family, against the backdrop of vicissitudes in the cloth trade and important national events. The patriarch, Simeon Crowther, works his way up to establish the family business, which prospers while others, older and more established, decline. His two sons, Zebediah & Joshua, very different in character & temperament, are rivals in the business. They marry very differently: Joshua''s wife is Annie, a former mill girl. Zebediah marries Clara, devious and ambitious for superior social status over the more established local families. The untimely death of his brother (the latter in an accident caused by his brother''s negligence) and his father''s fatal heart attack, enable Zebediah to take control of the business. However his son, Lancelot, is not interested in the family business unlike his nephew Simeon. The book is divided into 3 time periods (1854-1867; 1883-1894;1908-1921) which enables the different generations to play their parts in the future of the family firm.

Adam, a young man brought up in a colony of northcountrymen among the lead mines of Spain, comes home on his father''s death to the little town of Winterings, among the dales of the North Riding. The fells about the town are a warren of small lead mines, and Winterings is still a mining community, though the prosperity of the mid-19th century has passed. On the one hand are the Nattrasses, cousins to Adam through his mother, but long-standing enemies of the Brunskills; on the other Titus Alderson, uncle of Cherry Dinsdale, a local girl to whose goodness and charms Adam soon succumbs. When Adam begins to suspect who has plotted Titus'' disgrace, the stage is set; sides are taken in the little community and tongues wag; subterfuge and counter-plot get to work.

This novel is set in 14th century Yorkshire and tells the story of Ughtred, a young monk and artist at Rievaulx, and Lazelle, a young nun from a Gilbertine convent at Watton. The opening ten pages are titled 2The Immurement3 and describe how the pair, who have been convicted of heresy, are walled up alive. Just before the walling up is completed a Franciscan friar, Jerome, looks in at the couple and declares that he sees signs of plague. The walling up is completed hurriedly and the observers leave in a panic. The main part of the novel then describes the events leading up to this punishment, beginning with 2The Eleventh Month before Immurement3. Ughtred and Lazelle meet by chance when she is swept into a river and Ughtred rescues her. He thinks of her constantly and decides to use her face for that of the madonna in a painting he works on at Rievaulx. Because of their vows, they may not meet but chance does offer opportunities. Alongside this developing relationship, Armstrong shows Ughtred''s exposure to the ideas of John Wycliffe and the Lollards and his increasing disillusionment, not with Christianity, but with the worldliness of the Church.

Set in the small but strategically important town of Dover against the backdrop of the French Revolution, the rise of Napoleon and the resulting European wars.
