Corporate Strategies for Electronics Recycling

release date: Jan 01, 2003
Corporate Strategies for Electronics Recycling
This case study compares two very different models for recycling obsolete computers and electronics hardware that have been created by the two largest computer makers in the U.S. -- Hewlett Packard''s partnership with Micro Metallics of Roseville, California, and Dell Computers'' (recently renamed Dell, Inc.) partnership with UNICOR, the Federal Prison Industry. This study found that the two facilities differed dramatically in their transparency to the public. The Atwater facility exhibited a "fortress UNICOR" mentality, allowing only restricted access to investigators. UNICOR failed to respond to repeated requests to allow an industrial hygienist trained in occupational health and safety to inspect its facility, approving the visit too late for its findings to be included here. During a visit by other inspectors for this study, both investigators and inmates were forbidden from speaking with each other. Fortunately, the investigators were able to supplement their observations with testimonials from inmates, which are presented anonymously in this report to protect prisoners from reprisal. The Atwater facility refused to provide air quality test results, claiming that this information would have to be sought through a Freedom of Information Act request addressed to the federal Bureau of Prisons. In contrast, the Micro Metallics - Hewlett-Packard facility allowed our industrial hygienist to inspect freely, permitted investigators to speak informally with employees, and provided air monitoring and employee blood-lead test results.

Diamonds Are Deadly

Diamonds Are Deadly
The West African diamond mining industry makes a good setting for this adventure mystery. Nigel Ballantyne works for the diamond mining company, WADMINCO. His job is to stop the rampant illegal digging of diamonds which goes on in the WADMINCO lease area. But he finds this is difficult in the pervading political climate. Some of the illegal miners are financed by a shadowy figure known as Mama Sia. Nigel swears he will close her operations down. But as the story unfolds we sense that Mama Sia is gaining the upper hand. One of the main mysteries is to her identity. Who or what is she? From the begining Nigel realizes he is fighting a losing battle against the illegal miners? One of the main reasons is there is a ready market for their diamonds. How do you tell if a diamond has been mined legally or illegally? Intertwined with some violent events is a romance between Nigel and a Sierra Leonean named Rose Dunway. The story illustrates how dificult it is, in an economically poor country, to extract diamonds without suffering a high level of criminal activities.

A Walk Round Plugstreet

release date: Jan 01, 1997
A Walk Round Plugstreet
"A walk round Plugstreet highlights the multitude of little-known actions, places of interest and the activities of the men who served in this area during the Great War. Although much has been written of Plugstreet''s links with Bruce Bairnsfather''s ''Old Bill'' and its position on the southern edge of the Messines Ridge, little has been documented of its importance during the early- and mid-stages of the war. This book helps to remedy this and brings to life an area of the Western Front in which most regiments of the British and Commonwealth armies saw service"--Page 4 of cover.

release date: Dec 31, 1990
Poets And Pals Of Picardy
This book, following a weekend on the Somme with Mary Freeman as she visits the old front line and back areas, is about the soldiers who wrote poetry and those with whom they lived, fought and, in many cases died. It takes the reader to to the places where they saw action and to the cemeteries and memorials where those who did not survive, rest or are commemorated. Her uncanny knowledge of the battlefields and her deep understanding of poetry, brings to life the men who shared hardship and horror together, men who experience comradeship forged in conditions that are beyond comprehension today, men with normal desires and aspirations who happened to be wearing uniform and some who chose to express themselves through the medium of poetry.
