The Effects of Music Choice on Perceptual and Physiological Responses to Treadmill Exercise
This study investigated the effects of music choice on the ratings of attentional focus, affective valence, perceived exertion, and enjoyment during and after self-paced treadmill exercise of varied intensities. Thirty-four college-aged, healthy, active males and females volunteered to participate in the study. Participants completed 6 visits to the laboratory: the first visit was a medical screening to ensure safety of the participants. For the second visit, participants completed a maximal treadmill exercise test. On the third visit, participants completed the Brunel Music Rating Inventory-2 to determine their preferred and non-preferred music genres, and to self-select the low, moderate and high intensity exercise speeds that would be used in the experimental trials. During the last three visits, participants completed each of the three (preferred, non-preferred, no music) randomized and counterbalanced experimental trials. The Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale and the Feeling Scale were used to measure baseline and post-exercise ratings of enjoyment and affective valence. During exercise, the single-item Attentional Focus Scale, Feeling Scale, Borg 6-20, and Exercise Enjoyment Scale were used to measure attentional focus, affective valence, perceived exertion, and enjoyment, respectively. Results revealed a main effect for condition for affective valence and enjoyment (p

Essentials of Developmental Plant Anatomy

Essentials of Developmental Plant Anatomy
The main aim of this book is to provide a developmental perspective to plant anatomy. Authors Steeves and Sawhney provide fundamental information on plant structure and development to students at the introductory level, and as a resource material to researchers working in nearly all areas of plant biology i.e., plant physiology, systematics, ecology, developmental genetics and molecular biology. The book is focused on angiosperm species with some examples from different groups of plants. "Essentials of Developmental Plant Anatomy" starts with an introductory chapter and a brief introduction to plant cell structure, which is followed by the structure of the flower, plant reproduction (vegetative and sexual) and the development and structure of embryo - the precursor to the plant body. Each chapter then deals with essential information on the shoot system, diversity of plant cells and tissues, the structure and development of the stem, leaf, root, and the secondary body.

Design of Financial Securities

Design of Financial Securities
We study the key drivers of security design in the residential mortgage-backed security (RMBS) market during the run-up to the subprime mortgage crisis. We show that deals with a higher level of equity tranche have a significantly lower delinquency rate conditional on observable loan characteristics. The effect is concentrated within pools with a higher likelihood of asymmetric information between deal sponsors and potential buyers of the securities. Further, securities that are sold from high-equity-tranche deals command higher prices conditional on their credit ratings. Overall, our results show that the goal of security design in this market was not only to exploit regulatory arbitrage, but also to mitigate information frictions that were pervasive in this market.

Daddy's Little Princess

Daddy's Little Princess
In today''s society, women suffer from the objectification of the female body in the media and in everyday interactions. This objectification leads women to self-objectify by adopting a third-person perspective of their bodies. While the effects of mother-daughter relationships on self-objectification have been studied, there is minimal research examining the effects of father-daughter relationships on self-objectification, specifically during the period of adolescence. In this study, adolescent girls (N=102, M=16.5 years) completed a survey measuring perceived paternal closeness, perceived paternal benevolent sexism, and self-objectification. Analyses indicated that perceived paternal closeness was negatively correlated with self-objectification. Paternal benevolent sexism was not significantly correlated with daughters'' levels of self-objectification. Additionally, the Appearance subscale of benevolent sexism was positively correlated with the Control subscale of self-objectification; however, it was negatively correlated with the Body Surveillance subscale of self-objectification. These findings suggest that while paternal closeness may act as a protective factor against girls'' self-objectification, benevolent sexism in the context of father-daughter relationships may be more complex than in other male-female relationships.

Tactile and Digital Courses Within the Interior Design Curriculum an Exploratory Study on CIDA Curricula and Perspectives of Educators and Professionals
"This study explores the CIDA design school''s curriculum, specifically in relation to tactile and digital courses, and the preferences of the professional interior designer. One of the major goals of this study is to provide additional insight into the contemporary interior design practice, as well as the preferences and opinions of professionals on tactile and digital skill sets. This study will highlight the opinions and preferences of the interior design professionals, as well as provide insight into educator''s perspectives on curriculum''s strengths and weaknesses. Future studies on this subject could help educators develop curriculums that benefit the current student, best prepare graduates for the work force, and cater to the entry level design position requirements. This research addresses the CIDA requirements, the percentage of course type and focus in three analyzed curriculums, as well as the responses of design professionals and educators to the topic of curriculums, digital and tactile skill and professional preferences. This study utilizes a mixed methods approach using both quantitative and qualitative means in a two-phase exploratory methodology. The first phase of this study thoroughly examined the curriculums of CIDA accredited interior design programs, focusing on the percentage and type of courses taught, concentrating on digital versus tactile course focus. The sample for this phase included the CIDA accredited design programs from three schools; Chatham University, Mount Ida College, and New York School of Interior Design. The second phase consists of two online surveys that evaluate digital and tactile requirements within the field and in current design school education. The survey sample included both interior design professionals and educators. Both surveys addressed how tactile and digital courses influence professional practice as well as investigate views on curriculum and graduate skill set. Furthermore, this exploratory study developed a basis for future research. The problem statement and surrounding questions were explored. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the contemporary designers? Is what is being taught in design school being used in today''s entry-level interior design practice? Future research topics include: the connection of tactile courses and creative learning, digital hierarchy within curriculums, the design student learning style and curriculum''s connection to design thinking skills. A major finding of this exploratory study is that the combination of CIDA required and professional requested courses overwhelm a typical 120 credit, four-year interior design program." -- Abstract.

Investigating the Existing Stigma of Marijuana Use and Its Effects on Recreational Marijuana Users
With the recent legalization of marijuana in Colorado and Washington State, and the decriminalization in several other states, it is time to reflect on the existing research pertaining to marijuana. Forty-nine percent (49%) of Americans, 12 years and older, admitted to using marijuana and over eight million reported to have used marijuana at least once in February 2015 (Pew Research Center 2015). I explore in this thesis how a sample of recreational marijuana users perceive changing attitudes and how they internalize existing norms. The purpose of this thesis will be to explore the internalization of norms, and its lingering effects while also revealing implications as a result of stigmatization that the marijuana user must process.

VO-OHpic Treatment Reduces Cardiac Remodeling in Doxorubicin-induced Cardiomyopathy
Furthermore, Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) and Masson''s Trichrome histological stains confirmed reduced hypertrophy and fibrosis in Doxo+VO treated subjects compared to Doxo group. Western Blotting confirmed the reduction of p-PTEN levels and the increase in p-AKT cell survival protein expression in Doxo+VO subjects. In addition, VO-OHpic administration was shown to reduce the number of pro-inflammatory macrophages and increase the number of anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages that may further be involved in reduced apoptosis and fibrosis. Finally, heart function was improved in mice treated with VO compared to Doxo group. Collectively, our data suggests that VO-OHpic treatment reduces apoptosis, cardiac fibrosis and the process is mediated through the PTEN/AKT and inflammatory mechanisms with improved heart function in the DIC heart.

The Real Costs of Corporate Credit Ratings

The Real Costs of Corporate Credit Ratings
Credit rating agencies emphasize the importance of specific financial ratio thresholds in their rating process. Firms below these thresholds are more likely to receive higher ratings than similar firms that are not. I show that firms near key Debt/EBITDA thresholds are significantly more likely to reduce R &D and SG &A expenditures (boosting EBITDA) prior to bond issuance compared to observationally similar firms not near a threshold. Subsequently, they are more likely to experience declines in patent productivity, profitability, and Tobin''s Q. These distortions highlight an important cost of arm''s-length financing and an adverse consequence of transparency in credit rating criteria.

The Therapeutic Artist
This project is an exploration of artistic identity and the role of integrated arts in the formation and professional development of an art therapist. This is an in-depth review of integrated arts for personal growth and professional development viewed through the framework of the artist-as-therapist approach to clinical practice. The role of performance in personal and professional development is also discussed, and the opportunities it affords the student or therapist in strengthening self-awareness and becoming a more diverse clinical practitioner. This project proposes that the integration of creative arts into personal artistic and professional processing leads to an increased sense of self-awareness and the foundation for an overall more effective clinical practice.

The Effects of Compressive Myofascial Release on the Triceps Surae and Its Influence on Dorsiflexion at the Ankle
Conclusions: Compressive myofascial release significantly increases hamstring flexibility acutely after a single treatment, in participants with range of motion deficits. These results may suggest that adding multiple treatments or adding other interventions may increase results even more. Clinicians should consider adding compressive myofascial release in rehabilitation protocols for athletes with dorsiflexion deficits.

Driving Demand for Broadband Networks and Services

release date: Jun 21, 2014
Driving Demand for Broadband Networks and Services
This book examines the reasons why various groups around the world choose not to adopt broadband services and evaluates strategies to stimulate the demand that will lead to increased broadband use. It introduces readers to the benefits of higher adoption rates while examining the progress that developed and emerging countries have made in stimulating broadband demand. By relying on concepts such as a supply and demand gap, broadband price elasticity, and demand promotion, this book explains differences between the fixed and mobile broadband demand gap, introducing the notions of substitution and complementarity between both platforms. Building on these concepts, ‘Driving Demand for Broadband Networks and Services’ offers a set of best practices and recommendations aimed at promoting broadband demand. The broadband demand gap is defined as individuals and households that could buy a broadband subscription because they live in areas served by telecommunications carriers but do not do so because of either economic, limited awareness, or lack of digital literacy reasons. This grouping represents a range from 30% of the population in the US, 40% in Germany, and over 80% in most emerging countries. Research indicates that broadband usage is critical for social development, economic performance, and overall welfare and so it behoves governments to encourage demand. This study is the first of its kind to address the demand side of broadband diffusion, incorporating an economic analysis while offering real world examples of policies and initiatives that have successfully spurred demand in developed and emerging markets alike. This book is intended for policy makers, managers of telecommunications and other technology companies, as well as academics and graduate students in the areas of public policy, economic development, and technology management. This book is an eye-opener for policy makers. Traditionally ICT policy has focused on the supply side. Katz and Berry develop great ideas to leapfrog Internet penetration from the demand side, where the value of the Internet is. - Diego Molano Vega, Minister of Information Technologies and Communications of Colombia This book is an instant classic. It brilliantly and convincingly lays out the case why dealing with inadequate internet penetration has moved from the creation of supply to one of encouraging demand. It provides an information-rich and well-written presentation of the factors holding back people from becoming users, and offers a hugely valuable survey of the various programs around the world to make the broadband internet truly useful to people everywhere. It is the kind of book writers in this field will use constantly. - Eli Noam, Professor of Finance and Economics, Columbia Business School This new study by Katz and Berry examines the rationale for national broadband plans and the evidence for their success in driving demand. It presents the latest data on broadband in a range of case study countries, and provides best practice advice for policy-makers and development practitioners. - Dr Tim Kelly, Lead ICT Policy Specialist, World Bank

Design and Fabrication of Evaporators for Thermo-adsorptive Batteries

Design and Fabrication of Evaporators for Thermo-adsorptive Batteries
Current heating and cooling within electric vehicles places a significant demand on the battery, greatly reducing their potential driving range. An Advanced Thermo- Adsorptive Battery (ATB) reduces this load by storing thermal energy within a bed of adsorptive sheets. A phase change heat exchanger capable of delivering the required cooling via liquid-vapor phase change was designed and prototyped for ATB. The thermal performance and fluid flow within the phase change heat exchanger were characterized for both coolant and refrigerant. A full-scale and quarter-length prototype was designed within the desired geometric and operating condition constraints. In order to build the phase change heat exchanger, fabrication techniques, including brazing, copper sintering, and bonding porous media were explored and characterized. In addition, the quarter-length design was fabricated and insights from its construction are proposed as recommendations for future work.

Main Street Revitalization Effort for the Village of Union, Nebraska
Rural communities across America are working to strengthen their economies, provide better quality of life to residents, and build on assets such as traditional main streets, transportation initiatives, and natural amenities and resources. Today, rural communities face an array of challenges. Small communities are vulnerable to the impacts of expensive commutes, lack of mobility, financial resources, and other services. According to the USDA, "Some small communities, have limited local government staff, experience, or funding, which can mean few resources dedicated to providing sustainable amenities, regional collaboration, and other efforts to identify shared community goals and visions that can help shape growth and development" (USDA, 2011). Small communities must work hard to compete with larger cities and other communities to sustain economically and become prominent. This is often noticeable when there is a lack of investment and economic prosperity. Many rural communities have limited transportation options. Most small communities are not fit to support multiple modes of transportation, which limits access to jobs, medical care, and educational opportunities. For those who do drive, commutes to distant employment centers can be time consuming and require a large percentage of the family budget to be spent on transportation (USDA, 2011). In addition, intercity and regional mobility are drivers of economic growth in rural communities and bring tourists and other consumers to community businesses. Rural communities and small towns should be valued for their distinctive and historic features. Communities that conserve and build upon these resources, such as historic downtowns and main streets, will be better positioned to enhance quality of life for their residents. Without revitalizing main streets we would not see the places of shared memory where people are suppose to come together to live, work, and play.

A Study of Beaver Pond Morphology and Site Characteristics After Disturbance in Eastern Glacier National Park, Montana

A Study of Beaver Pond Morphology and Site Characteristics After Disturbance in Eastern Glacier National Park, Montana
Little research has been conducted on alterations or disturbances to beaver ponds, which is important to understanding beavers'' interactions with the environment. Three sites with beaver-pond sequences in Glacier National Park in northwest Montana were chosen for study, including sites near Saint Mary Lake, Lake Sherburne, and Lower Two Medicine Lake. The Saint Mary Lake site was subjected to an extensive forest fire in the watershed in 2006. The latter two sites are adjacent to human-constructed reservoirs. Aerial photos were used to create maps in a Geography Information System for all three site locations over a twenty year span from 1991-2011. Statistical analysis compared average pond areas of beaver-pond sequences between sites, as well as a comparison of average area of pond sequences between years and site locations. Analysis proved that the Lower Two Medicine is statistically different in average area of pond sequences when compared to the other sites, but no statistical difference in beaver-pond area existed between the Saint Mary and Lake Sherburne sites. There was also no statistical difference between area of ponds when compared to different years. Varying lake levels because of irrigation draw-down at Lake Sherburne and Lower Two Medicine created a dynamic base level, whereas the local base level for the Saint Mary ponds remains relatively constant year round. The fluctuating base levels of Lower Two Medicine and Lake Sherburne ensure dynamic environments for the creek systems, and the ponds along it. The Saint Mary Ponds appear to be undergoing rapid siltation following the 2006 forest fire within the drainage basin.

Improved Electrolyte-NRTL Parameter Estimation Using a Combined Chemical and Phase Equilibrium Algorithm

Improved Electrolyte-NRTL Parameter Estimation Using a Combined Chemical and Phase Equilibrium Algorithm
Chemical and phase equilibria for aqueous monoethanolamine and piperazine carbon dioxide absorption solutions were modeled using the electrolyte-NRTL activity model. Binary interaction parameters were estimated using differential evolution, and a statistically significant improvement was noted in the ability to calculate total system pressure of the solutions. Calculation of partial pressures was met with mixed success; piperazine vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) experimental data showed excellent agreement with calculated values, while monoethanolamine VLE experimental data showed non-trivial systemic deviations from calculated values. Equilibrium compositions were determined using a paired free energy minimization and simultaneous equations approach developed in this work; this paired approach is shown to calculate chemical and phase equlibria more quickly than traditional free energy minimization in the context of this work. Estimation of parameters for single amine systems followed by simultaneous estimation of parameters from all pertinent amine systems has been shown to effectively narrow the parameter search space and results in parameter estimates with narrow confidence intervals. Parameter estimates were obtained using data from multiple literature sources, and verified using separate data sets and additional data from the regressed data sets that was withheld from the parameter search to test the predictive capability of estimated values. Parameter estimation was performed without the use of any data that requires a complex experimental apparatus; instead computationally intensive methods were used to replace experimentally intensive methods. Despite the relative simplicity of the data used, model calculations were reasonable for monoethanolamine and excellent for piperazine.

All Shall Hide
A literal interpretation of Revelation 6:12-17 states survivors from a future great earthquake shall flee to hide in dens And The rocks of mountains. Such behavior is very unusual. Earthquake survivors normally flee to open spaces, away from buildings, To avoid injury from falling debris. All Shall Hide uses the findings from historical, aerospace, astrophysical, geophysical, and medical studies to show why world populations will be frightened into seeking heavily shielded shelters. What is the source of their terror? People suddenly collapsing in public from increased rates of heart failure caused by a great space weather storm. The awesome intensity of its cosmic ray output and harsh variations in the Earth''s magnetic field will dwarf the Carrington Event of 1859. All Shall Hide shows the foretold darkening of the Sun to levels beneath global tempest of sunspots shall be the cause the perfect space weather storm. All Shall Hide formed its multidisciplinary, literal interpretation of Apostle John''s scripture from the fiery truths of scientific studies. For example, statistically significant correlations between the variations in cosmic ray neutron rates and changes in the rates of death caused by acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), sudden cardiac death, cerebrovascular accident (stroke), or arrhythmia were manifested from collaborative research by Israel, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Azerbaijan, Russia, and Greece. The ability of the Moon to glow in the absence of sunlight was derived from observations and studies of solar particle induced lunar luminescence. The dates of solar blackouts, like the darkness at the crucifixion And The third Persian invasion of Greece, were deduced from trustworthy historical accounts of acute solar darkening events that could not be attributed to solar eclipses and/or clouds. All Shall Hide is a must read for those concerned with strengthening their beliefs in the Holy Bible.

Post Traumatic Coping Strategies
"Previous research suggests that religion is a frequently used coping mechanism in response to stressful life events. The manner in which individuals approach and utilize religious practice can be affected by the types oflife events they experience. The current study proposed that intrafamilial trauma would be related to higher levels of extrinsic religiosity, as well as higher practices of negative religious coping strategies. Extrinsic religiosity was also expected to relate to higher levels of negative religious coping strategies. Predictions of the current investigation were partially supported. Extrinsic religiosity was more related to negative religious coping styles than intrinsic religiosity, but was not more associated with intrafamilial trauma. In addition, intrafamilial trauma showed no significant relationship with negative religious coping strategies, though general intrapersonal trauma was"--Document.
