Challenging the established historiography that frames the French picturesque garden movement as an international style, this book contends that the French picturesque gardens from 1775 until 1867 functioned as liminal zones at the epicenter of court patronage systems. Four French consorts--queen Marie-Antoinette and empresses Joséphine Bonaparte, Marie-Louise and Eugénie--constructed their gardens betwixt and between court ritual and personal agency, where they transgressed sociopolitical boundaries in order to perform gender and identity politics. Each patron endorsed embodied strolling, promoting an awareness of the sentient body in artfully contrived sensoria at the Petit Trianon and Malmaison, transforming these places into spaces of shared affectivity. The gardens became living legacies, where female agency, excluded from the garden history canon, created a forum for spatial politics. Beyond the garden gates, the spatial experience of the picturesque influenced the development of cultural fields dedicated to performances of subjectivity, including landscape design, cultural geography and the origination of landscape aesthetics in France.

Prior to 1985 polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was the most commonly used well casing material for ground water monitoring. In 1985 the EPA published the initial draft of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Ground-Water Monitoring Technical Enforcement Guidance Document. This document stated that ''steel casings deteriorated in corrosive environments; PVC deteriorated in contact with ketones, esters and aromatic hydrocarbons ... '' and recommended that either Teflon or stainless steel 316 be used for constructing wells. The EPA''s concerns were that PvC and the casing materials commonly used for ground water monitoring either altered the ground water samples or did not meet the long-term structural characteristics required of RCRA monitoring wells. While we have found many studies that have examined the effects of well casing materials on ground water sample, little information exists on the long-term stability of casing materials exposed to extreme environmental conditions such as highly salinity or pH, or to either pure of high concentrations of organic of organic solvents. The study examined the antecedents of met expectations. It combined three streams of research, namely, the ''strength of weak ties hypothesis'' (Granovetter, 1973, 1974) in accessing job opportunities, the effects of job sources on the initial expectations of the job seekers (Wanous, 1980, 1992; Wanous and Collela, 1989) and the effects of socialization on expectations (Irving and Meyer, 1994, Major, et al, 1995). Data was collected from college graduates before and after they entered employment. The me del was tested using hierarchical regression design. The results showed that prior work experience (number of years) was positively related to the use of referrals whereas the relatedness of work experience was positively related to rehiring and negatively related to the use of employment agencies. We did not find any relationships between job sources and initial expectations. Initial expectations and socialization had a main affected on met expectations. Socialization also acted as a moderator in the relationship between initial expectation and met expectations. Socialization had a greater impact at low levels of initial expectations than at high levels of initial expectations. A surprising finding was that referrals had a direct negative relationship with met expectations. The model explained 53.9% of the variance in met expectations and had a significant chi-square goodness of fit.
