An estimated 170.38 million elderly adults suffer from some stage of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) worldwide, a vision defect that damages the macula, the central region of the retina required for sharp vision, such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces. Genetic factors strongly modify one''s risk for developing AMD, and most of these genetic changes are found in genes of the alternative complement cascade, a component of the immune system. The lack of effective AMD prevention calls for the identification of druggable molecules and pathways. In my research, I use microarrays and RNA sequencing to investigate the events occurring in early AMD, the reasons for macular susceptibility to AMD, and the events triggering aberrant blood vessel growth in late AMD. First, I found that genes associated with endothelial cells tend to be expressed at lower levels in human donors eyes affected by early AMD than in control eyes, concordant with previous studies indicating loss of choriocapillaris in early AMD. Second, I found that molecular signals across regions of the retina, retinal pigment epithelium, and choroid generally mirror the distribution of cell types in these regions. Third, I found that damage to cultured primate chorioretinal endothelial cells by the end product of complement activation, membrane attack complex, produces an environment conducive to choroidal neovascularization, a symptom of late-stage AMD. I propose a model that bridges genetic variants in the complement cascade genes with blood vessel loss in early AMD and the pathological growth of blood vessels in late AMD.

Research suggests there are a number of factors that influence band directors'' repertoire selection. Findings suggest that decisions can be influenced by musical and non-musical internal and external factors. This study examined the effect of musical and non-musical considerations on band directors'' repertoire selection for performances at the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE). High school band directors (N = 123) completed a survey designed to report and reflect on the viability of the criteria used to select the repertoire performed at LGPE in 2014. A factor analysis identified eight primary musical components for selecting repertoire for LGPE: Composition Elements, Various Standards, Confidence Selecting LGPE Repertoire, Teaching Musicality, Teaching Fundamentals, Importance of Rehearsal Time, Importance of Double Reeds and Low and High Brasses. A second factor analysis revealed three unique decision-making styles among participant directors: Power Risk-Taking, Passive Decision-Maker, and Reactionary Decision- Making. Results revealed a relationship with passive decision-making regarding the component Confidence Selecting LGPE Repertoire and with reactionary decision-making styles components Confidence Selecting LGPE Repertoire and Importance of Rehearsal Time. Additional analysis revealed the importance of teaching experience and the components Confidence Selecting LGPE Repertoire, Teaching Musicality, Teaching Fundamentals, and Low and High Brasses. The number of ensembles band directors supervised at the 2014 LGPE revealed significance with the components Various Standards and Confidence Selecting LGPE Repertoire.

Concurrent error detection (CED) is the detection of errors or faults in a circuit or data path concurrent with normal operation of that circuit. The general approach for CED is to calculate a check symbol for the inputs to the circuit under operation, predict the check symbol that will result for the output of the circuit for those inputs, and compare the predicted check symbol to the one that is actually calculated for the output. If the predicted and actual check symbols are different, an error or fault has been detected. The alternative to this check symbol prediction is to use a second copy of the circuit under operation and compare the results of the two circuits. For some classes of circuits the prediction of the output check symbol can require less circuitry than a second copy of the circuit being tested. Four examples of these types of circuits are examined in this dissertation: Arithmetic Logic Units (ALUs), array multipliers, self-synchronous scrambler-descrambler pairs with their intervening data path, and switch fabrics. Faults in integrated circuits tend to produce unidirectional errors. Unidirectional errors are those in which all of the errors are in the same direction (e.g., 0 to 1 errors) within the block of data covered by a given check symbol. For this reason, codes that are optimized for unidirectional errors are the focus of investigation for most of the applications. In particular, the Bose-Lin codes are examined for those applications where unidirectional errors are expected to be typical. In order to examine the performance of the Bose-Lin codes in one of these applications, it was necessary to determine the theoretical performance for Bose- Lin codes for error rates beyond what had been previously studied. This analysis of Bose-Lin codes with large numbers of "burst" errors also included a further generalization of the codes.
