The Impact of U.S.-Soviet Relations on Cuba, 1959-1964

release date: Jan 01, 2008
The Impact of U.S.-Soviet Relations on Cuba, 1959-1964
Fidel Castro assumed power in Cuba on January 1, 1959. Dwight D. Eisenhower was president. The United States government watched closely as the new leader of Cuba began expropriating U.S. property on the island. By the beginning of 1960, the United States feared the emerging socialist nature of the Castro regime and took strides to prevent it from expanding to other areas of Latin America. After the U.S. withdrew its support of Cuba the Soviet Union quickly took its place. The Soviet Union''s influence on Fidel Castro played a decisive role in future United States-Cuban relations. In the climatic [i.e. climactic] years of the struggle between East and West, when nuclear war became more than a theoretical possibility, Cuba was the center of a world-wide diplomatic issue. During the period from 1959 to 1964 the United States, Soviet Union, and Cuba entered into political debates surrounding nuclear weapons and the role of communism in the world. The U.S. did not want to see a communist nation develop in the Western Hemisphere. Cuba, under the leadership of Castro, did just that. The leaders of the United States and the Soviet Union targeted Cuba as a staging ground for diplomatic issues during this time. After Eisenhower was replaced by John F. Kennedy, the Cuba issue intensified. The Bay of Pigs fiasco led the Kennedy administration to plan again to overthrow Castro by supplying pro-U.S. guerillas. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev aided Cuba in the fight against imperialism leading to the almost catastrophic missile crisis of October, 1961. In the end, Castro''s Cuba has endured the test of time.

Lady Killer and Lust-murderers

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Lady Killer and Lust-murderers
ABSTRACT: During the years following the First World War, and until the consolidation of the Nazi party, paintings and drawings of nude murdered and butchered women proliferated in the German art galleries and avant-garde publications of the Weimar Republic. Lustmord, a term derived from criminology and psychology, was the label assigned to such works, and the representation of the lust-murder of women by men became curiously ubiquitous in Weimar culture. Although previous scholarship has tended to treat Lustmord art homogonously, in this thesis I argue that these works must be considered individually to grasp the varying meaning of Lustmord to Weimar artists and audiences. My study surveys the transformation of Lustmord from a crime to an artistic genre, then looks specifically at two paintings: Der Kleine Frauenmörder by George Grosz (1893-1959) and Der Lustmörder (Selbstporträt) by Otto Dix (1891-1969). I argue that despite the shared subject matter, and compositional and temporal parallels of Der Kleine Frauenmörder and Der Lustmörder (Selbstporträt), the two paintings have meaning beyond that generically attributed to Lustmord art. The separate meanings that can be culled from these works speak specifically to the circumstances and intentions of the artists who created them, and offer insight to the multivalence of Lustmord in Weimar society.

High School Teacher Perceptions of Music Performance Anxiety

release date: Jan 01, 2016
High School Teacher Perceptions of Music Performance Anxiety
Music Performance Anxiety (MPA) can be defined as "the experience of marked and persistent anxious apprehension related to musical performance that has arisen through specific anxiety conditioning experiences, and which is manifested through combinations of affective, cognitive, somatic and behavioural symptoms" (Kenny, 2011, p. 433). This is a disorder that many students and performers, no matter what level or ability, seem to experience in the music classroom. Though MPA can inhibit students from reaching their full potential, there is a plethora of information available to guide teachers to become more aware and helpful towards students who are experiencing MPA. The concept is to see how much teachers really know and how are they being efficient and proactive in their classrooms to help their students. This study will examine the perceptions of five high school music teacher''s views of Music Performance Anxiety as compared to existing literature. The qualitative data collected were grouped into four themes: (a) traits and symptoms, (b) coping techniques, (c) environments, and (d) impact of MPA. The teachers in this study appeared to feel that that there was a need for better education and knowledge on MPA in order to better assist their students.

Taxing Outsiders in Mississippi

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Taxing Outsiders in Mississippi
Mississippi began levying sales taxes and other taxes that discriminated fiercely against political outsiders in 1822. Designed to protect local businesses, the higher taxes targeted peddlers, auctioneers, and other traveling vendors in the early 19th century. After the Civil War, the targets changed as retailing changed, to include itinerant vendors of all types, including gypsy bands, fortune tellers, patent medicine salesmen, out-of-state trappers, and employment agents offering out-of-state jobs. In the 20th century, transient vendors bearing higher taxes did NOT include vendors needed by Mississippi businesses (such as business-to-business salesmen) but did include double taxes on chain stores until the courts stopped it. In the 21st century, Mississippi has helped lead the fight against the Internet Tax Freedom Act, so that it could tax sales by internet vendors from other states as heavily as it taxes vendors who have a physical presence in Mississippi. The state''s nearly 2''02year tradition of protecting local businesses by heavy taxation of political outsiders is costly to Mississippi consumers but protects the politicians from voter retaliation.

Prayse

Prayse
So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.Isaiah 55:11God has blessed each of us with the ability to create and destroy. We use our words to define purpose. Words are containers of power that transcend the concept of time and echo for eternity. They are containers of power, loosed in the earth. Our faith is strengthened by the power of confession. God inhabits the praises of his people. When we pray in secret, God rewards us openly. Choose life that it may be well with our souls and with our children. In this we can be confident - God is listening.

Climate Change, Agriculture and Poverty
Although much has been written about climate change and poverty as distinct and complex problems, the link between them has received little attention. Understanding this link is vital for the formulation of effective policy responses to climate change. This paper focuses on agriculture as a primary means by which the impacts of climate change are transmitted to the poor, and as a sector at the forefront of climate change mitigation efforts in developing countries. In so doing, the paper offers some important insights that may help shape future policies as well as ongoing research in this area.

Student Transience in North Carolina

release date: Jan 01, 2009
Student Transience in North Carolina
This paper describes the school mobility rates for elementary and middle school students in North Carolina and attempts to estimate the effect of school mobility on the performance of different groups of students using student fixed effects models. School mobility is defined as changing schools at times that are non-promotional (e.g., moving from middle to high school). We used detailed administrative data on North Carolina students and schools from 1997 to 2005 and followed four cohorts of 3rd graders for six years each. School mobility rates were highest for minority and disadvantaged students. School mobility rates for Hispanic students declined across successive cohorts, but increased for Black students. Findings on effects were most pronounced in math. School mobility hurt the math performance of Black and Hispanic students, but not the math performance of white students. School mobility improved the reading performance of white and more advantaged students, but had no effect on the reading performance of minority students. "Strategic" school moves (cross-district) benefitted or had no effect on student performance, but "reactive" moves (within district) hurt all groups of students. White and Hispanic students were more likely to move to a higher quality school while Blacks were more likely to move to a lower quality school. The negative effects of school mobility increased with the number of school moves. Tables are appended. (Contains 1 exhibit, 9 footnotes, 5 figures, and 15 tables.).

Seismic Noise Analysis to Constrain Shallow Velocity Structure in the Southern San Andreas Fault Region

Seismic Noise Analysis to Constrain Shallow Velocity Structure in the Southern San Andreas Fault Region
The seismic velocity structure in the southern San Andreas Fault region is characterized by a known, distinct seismic velocity contrast on opposite sides of the fault, with a thick sedimentary region on the west side (Salton Sea area). Reverberations would affect the duration of shaking for El Centro, Mexicali, and other communities in the Coachella Valley and Imperial Valley. Furthermore, there are other areas where deep basins are bounded by faults that could have similar effects. Therefore, being able to determine the 3D structure is a critical facet of assessing the overall seismic hazard for structures on such basins.

Mortality of New Zealand Native Frogs in Captivity

Mortality of New Zealand Native Frogs in Captivity
Three species of New Zealand native frogs (Leiopelma archeyi, L. hochstetteri, and L. pakeka) have been held in captivity in various institutions since 2000 as part of a programme to maintain and breed these threatened species. Following the death of a large number of these captive frogs, the Department of Conservation Native Frog Recovery Group decided that an investigation was needed to determine the cause. In this mortality study, we obtained data from captive populations to analyse mortality rates and causes of death for 252 wild-caught Leiopelma spp. These were held in captivity at the University of Canterbury and later transferred to other institutions between 2000 and 2006. Leiopelma archeyi and L. hochstetteri had similar overall average mortality but different yearly mortality patterns, whereas L. pakeka had much lower overall mortality. The major cause of death for L. archeyi and L. hochstetteri was bacterial infection, which was thought to be induced by a combination of husbandry factors, but mainly from oversterilising the substrate. Consequently, Auckland Zoo instigated a change in management, whereby soil was only heated to a temperature and for a length of time that was just sufficient to kill amphibian chytrid. New disease syndromes (skin blisters and muscle deterioration (rhabdomyolysis)) were also detected. Knowledge of disease is an important component of captive husbandry, so that healthy breeding populations can be maintained and we can gain an insight into diseases that may be affecting free-living populations. It is recommended that the staff at each institution undertake a review of all captive mortalities and report back to the Native Frog Recovery Group on an annual basis, so that any husbandry or disease issues that have arisen can be identified quickly.

Epigenetic Modulation of the UL97 Gene Product in CMV-associated Central Nervous System Tumors

release date: Jan 01, 2005
Epigenetic Modulation of the UL97 Gene Product in CMV-associated Central Nervous System Tumors
Abstract: Gliomas are the most common primary central nervous system (CNS) tumor and are associated with a particularly poor prognosis despite the advances of multimodality therapy. Recent work demonstrating an association between gliomas and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection has led us to postulate that modulation of key viral gene products presents an attractive opportunity to selectively deliver therapy to this refractory CNS tumor. We hypothesize that drugs capable of targeting epigenetic processes will provide antitumor activity while simultaneously inducing viral gene products that can subsequently be targeted by a variety of agents including nucleoside analogues. Here we provide data demonstrating that drugs with histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACi) activity facilitate glioblastoma cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in vitro. The glioma cell lines, Gli3605 and U251, and the neuroblastoma lines, NB11 and NB11 CMV were used in experiments to test our hypothesis. All lines treated with the HDACi depsipeptide or HDACi 42 underwent induction of programmed cell death in a dose-dependent fashion. However, the CMV-infected NB11 cell line demonstrated increased resistance to HDACi-mediated apoptosis. Treatment of the NB11 CMV cell line with doses of depsipeptide and HDACi 42, previously shown to inhibit histone deacetylase activity, resulted in the induction of the CMV protein kinase UL97 in a dose-dependent fashion. Addition of the nucleoside analogue ganciclovir (GCV) to HDACi-treated cells resulted in enhanced cell death that selectively occurred in NB11 CMV cells but not the parental line NB11 suggesting a CMV-specific effect. These data support consideration of combined use of histone deacetylase inhibitors and antiviral compounds in cytomegalovirus-associated malignant brain tumors. Studies are in progress to further characterize (i) mechanism(s) leading to enhanced HDACi-mediated UL97 expression, (ii) whether CMV-infected glioblastoma cell lines demonstrate similar findings and (iii) the effect of this combination treatment strategy in an in vivo model of PCNS-glioblastoma.

Adoption Of The Sawyer Water Filter In Peru

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Adoption Of The Sawyer Water Filter In Peru
In Peru, lack of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) results in 6,600 deaths per year that represents approximately 3.9% of total deaths. Three thousand and nine hundred of these deaths were due to diarrheal diseases (Prüss-Üstün et al., 2008). Systematic reviews suggest that interventions to improve microbial quality of drinking water are successful in reducing diarrheal diseases (Fewtrell et al., 2005; Clasen et al., 2007; Fry et al., 2013). Interventions for household water treatment and safe storage to ensure safe drinking water reduce diarrhea by 31-52% (WHO/UNICEF, 2013). The SAWYER PointONE filter, a portable and adaptable membrane filtration device as small as the hand, is one point-of-use (POU) technology option for populations that rely on unsafe water from an improved source, or for areas that still rely on unimproved water sources for drinking and cooking. The filter functions strictly through mechanical exclusion accomplished by a hollow fiber membrane. The filters are certified for 0.1 μm as the largest pore size; therefore preventing diarrhea-causing bacteria such as E. coli, cholera, and typhoid to pass through the membrane. This research focuses on SAWYER water filter users who use a filter purchased through a sales agent in Independencia, Ica, Peru. Fifteen households in 9 communities and a total of 39 individuals were surveyed with the overall goal of better understanding the adoption of the SAWYER water filter as a POU water treatment technology in relation to three themes of: 1) household socio-economic factors 2) water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) related characteristic and behaviors of users, and 3) Health Belief Model factors. The results showed SAWYER water filter users to have higher socio-economic status on average. All households had a high Progress out of Poverty Index® (PPI®) score. The heads of households, both male and female, were found to be more educated than the national average.
