Theorizing Outdoor Recreation and Ecology

release date: Apr 29, 2016
Theorizing Outdoor Recreation and Ecology
Deciding what user impacts are natural or unnatural has inspired much debate. Biophysically, moose cause similar kinds of soil and vegetation impacts as hikers. Yet moose are the sign of nature while hikers are the sign of damage. The field of outdoor recreation is beset with paradoxes, and this book presents a unique, alternative framework to address these dilemmas. Examining outdoor recreation through the lens of ecological theory, Ryan draws from theorists such as Foucault, Derrida and Latour. The book explores minimum impact strategies designed to protect and enhance ecological integrity, but that also require a disturbing amount of policing of users, which runs counter to the freedom users seek. Recent ecological theory suggests that outdoor recreation''s view of nature as balanced when impacts are removed is outdated and incorrect. What is needed, and indeed Ryan presents, is a paradoxical and ecological view of humans as neither natural nor unnatural, a view that embraces some traces in nature.

Saint Patrick’S Secret

release date: Jun 26, 2013
Saint Patrick’S Secret
Mary Jo Ryan travelled over twenty thousand miles, from Ireland, to Australia, to Savannah, Georgia, in search of love, security, and peace. Instead, she found bigotry, hatred, betrayal, and pain; and the nightmare of a secret which she carried alone, until she met Frances Jackson and Richard Frankel. Frances was an African-American war widow whose courage saved Mary Jos life and whose strong faith inspired her to live above her loneliness. Richard was a combat pilot and Korean War hero seeking the truth in a world of wartime lies. Richards search to find his brother, a priest who had disappeared in 1949, revealed a Catholic conspiracy and a cover-up buried in the Pentagon. But it also led him to meet Mary Jo, and to help her carry the burden of a secret which she would keep for fifty years. Mary Jo and her two sons became the family which Richard never knew. But his attempt to overcome his own secret shame would lead to a crime which would forever link Saint Patricks parish and a 1961 CIA operation in Cuba, in a countdown to tragedy. Much more than a mystery, this is the story of a Christian womans faith, an embittered soldiers desperation, and a lonely warriors courage. In Gods providential plan, they overcome a web of lies and secret sins, on their shared journey to forgiveness and truth.

The Case of a Small Luxury Resort
This case examines the dilemma of a SME located on an island on the West coast of Florida. The land was originally used for development of summer homes and evolved to a business of rental management of the units. Amenities including a swimming pool, tennis courts, a restaurant and snack bar, a store, and bicycle and golf cart rentals were added. A consultant determined The Resort''s positioning, in relationship to its competitive set, had been performing well in terms of occupancy level and ADR, but was declining in general business activity. Analysis of reservation data indicated that most of the market came from within Florida, which was a surprise to management, who realised they needed further research to understand how to effectively market the resort.

The Politics of Cultural Production in the DIY Hardcore Scene in Bandung, Indonesia

The Politics of Cultural Production in the DIY Hardcore Scene in Bandung, Indonesia
[Truncated abstract] In this thesis I explore the efforts by a group of young Indonesian hardcore punks to establish an autonomous community based on participatory ''Do It Yourself'' principles, as they strive to avoid the reduction of their cultural production to an assemblage of commodities for sale. I position my thesis as a critical engagement with the social theory and political practices of the anak DIY themselves. My argument draws primarily on the participant observation fieldwork I carried out with the Bandung DIY community, and particularly the DIY activists organised around the Kolektif Balai Kota (City Hall Collective), in 2004 and early 2005. Drawing on global anarcho-punk and DIY hardcore currents, these ''DIY kids'' (anak DIY) position themselves as critics of Bandung''s thriving underground music scene, which they perceive as having ''sold out'' to the commercial cultural industries. Indeed, while this scene has maintained a degree of independence from direct corporate ownership and control, it has increasingly been drawn into the capitalist logic of accumulation. More specifically, as the scene has developed into a small but significant youth-oriented fashion industry, the subcultural forms of independence, distinction, and resistance which characterise the underground have been transformed into a neoliberal form of competitive entrepreneurialism based on precarious cultural labour. Breaking with the spectacular subcultural transgression of the commercial underground, the anak DIY promote the values of kemandirian (autonomy) and komunitas (community) as a positive alternative to capitalist alienation. They seek to express and realise their values through their performances of DIY hardcore. DIY hardcore performances establish a positive synthesis between community participation and political critique and collapse the divide between performers and audience. However, the aesthetics of DIY hardcore display a degree of tension between sincere expression and ironic performance. I also identify an unresolved conflict between hardcore as a specific music genre and DIY as an ethic of practice. The specific aesthetics of hardcore serve as a vital vector for affective investment and identification, yet this renders the political practices of DIY production vulnerable to aestheticisation and commodification. I further analyse DIY hardcore as an autonomous practice of cultural production and exchange. The Bandung community is part of a global network of DIY enterprises, a system of social and economic relationships mediated through DIY hardcore products...
