The Wolf and the Watchman

release date: Aug 29, 2013
The Wolf and the Watchman
What happens when a father asks his son to lie for the greater good? Growing up, Scott Johnson always suspected that his dad was different. Only as a teenager did he discover the truth: his father was a spy, one of the CIA’s most trusted officers. And, as Scott came to realise, his father had been living a double life for so long that his lies were hard to separate from the truth. When an adult Scott embarked on a career as a war correspondent, he found himself returning to many of the troubled countries of his youth. In the dusty streets of Pakistan and Afghanistan, amid the cold urbanity of Yugoslavia, and down the mysterious alleys of Mexico City, he came face to face with his father’s murky past — and his own complicity in it. The Wolf and the Watchman is a provocative, meditative reckoning on truth, deception, and manipulation, and the fidelities we owe to ourselves and to our families.

Neoconstructivism

release date: Nov 25, 2009
Neoconstructivism
Arguments over the developmental origins of human knowledge are ancient, founded in the writings of Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hume, and Kant. They have also persisted long enough to become a core area of inquiry in cognitive and developmental science. Empirical contributions to these debates, however, appeared only in the last century, when Jean Piaget offered the first viable theory of knowledge acquisition that centered on the great themes discussed by Kant: object, space, time, and causality. The essence of Piaget's theory is constructivism: The building of concepts from simpler perceptual and cognitive precursors, in particular from experience gained through manual behaviors and observation. The constructivist view was disputed by a generation of researchers dedicated to the idea of the "competent infant," endowed with knowledge (say, of permanent objects) that emerged prior to facile manual behaviors. Taking this possibility further, it has been proposed that many fundamental cognitive mechanisms -- reasoning, event prediction, decision-making, hypothesis testing, and deduction -- operate independently of all experience, and are, in this sense, innate. The competent-infant view has an intuitive appeal, attested to by its widespread popularity, and it enjoys a kind of parsimony: It avoids the supposed philosophical pitfall posed by having to account for novel forms of knowledge in inductive learners. But this view leaves unaddressed a vital challenge: to understand the mechanisms by which new knowledge arises. This challenge has now been met. The neoconstructivist approach is rooted in Piaget's constructivist emphasis on developmental mechanisms, yet also reflects modern advances in our understanding of learning mechanisms, cortical development, and modeling. This book brings together, for the first time, theoretical views that embrace computational models and developmental neurobiology, and emphasize the interplay of time, experience, and cortical architecture to explain emergent knowledge, with an empirical line of research identifying a set of general-purpose sensory, perceptual, and learning mechanisms that guide knowledge acquisition across different domains and through development.

A Father for Our Father

release date: Oct 01, 2008
A Father for Our Father
A Father for Our Father The Foundation for a Flourishing Family We are losing the battle for our children!! Family is no longer defined as father, mother, and child and this trend must stop!! "Dysfunction" is the buzzword describing our families. Rather than fight this trend, we are accepting it. The cultural shift from a God-fearing, family-oriented society has forced our children to fend for themselves. Our children are depending on us to do the right thing and, frankly, they deserve better than we are giving them. Consider the facts: - 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes - 90% of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes - 85% of all children that exhibit behavioral disorders come from fatherless homes These are just a few of the shocking statistics linked to the impact of a missing father in the lives of our children. In A Father for Our Father, we will discover how the "Lord's Prayer" is more than an outline for prayer but also an outline for establishing a flourishing family. While this book is written with men in mind, women will discover the vital role they play in facilitating the changes necessary for men to become who they were created to be. And young men will find help defining their future roles as well. We will discuss the reference, the motivation, the role, and the calling that is unique to men, and clearly identify their responsibilities. Join me in discovering the power and influence that only you possess. We can restore our families! We can reverse this trend! Learn what it means to be A Father for Our Father!

The Hebron story mixes talented twins, spurred on by a pro-athlete older brother; a reed-thin, 6-101⁄2 center, coming late to basketball but getting better with every game; two hot-handed outside shooters overcoming challenges of their own; and a "Little Napoleon" of a coach, utterly focused on putting together just the right ingredients to win a state championship and more importantly, to best his mentor. Desire, devotion, dedication--it all came together for the Green Giants in 1952. They did what it took. They won it all.
