Countermeasures to Shark Attack

Countermeasures to Shark Attack
This handbook describes the appearance, habits and distribution of some of the more common sea snakes, land snakes and crocodiles of southeast Asia. Color photographs and paintings of these animals are included as aids to recognition. A section on the American honeybee is included as a general guide to dealing with venomous insects; future, additional sections will cover southeast Asian insects, spiders and scorpions. A medical section describes tests of the potency of antivenins for the bites of the Malayan pit viper, common cobra and blue krait, and suggests a dose schedule for treatment. Revisions and additions to this handbook are expected in response to readers' comments and descriptions of encounters with dangerous animals; to this end, questionnaires and encounter description forms are included at the end of the handbook. A section on shark attack was added to the Handbook in June 1974. This section describes the causes and distribution of shark attack and discusses the countermeasures that can be taken during operations at sea. General advice on avoiding attack is given, and emergency treatment of victims is outlined.

Coastal Marsh Vegetation Dynamics of the East Bay of Galveston Bay, Texas

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Coastal Marsh Vegetation Dynamics of the East Bay of Galveston Bay, Texas
The structure and function of coastal marshes results from a complex interaction of biotic and abiotic processes that continually influence the characteristics of marsh vegetation. A great deal of research has focused on how tidal processes influence vegetation dynamics along the Atlantic coast, but few studies have investigated the influence of similar processes in the marshes along the Gulf of Mexico. This study aims to identify the characteristic vegetation assemblages of the coastal marshes bordering the East Bay of Galveston Bay, Texas, and identify if elevation, inundation frequency and burning frequency are important to their structure. To identify characteristic vegetation assemblages, hierarchical cluster analysis was used. The cluster analysis resulted in seven statistically different vegetation assemblages that were used in diversity analysis and classification and regression analysis (CART) as dependent variables. Diversity measures were calculated at both the plot and assemblage scale using Shannon's diversity index and species richness. The resulting diversity measures were used as predictor variables in the CART analysis as well as regression analysis. Hydrologic modeling was accomplished using Mike 21, a flow and wave simulation model, along with a geographic information system (GIS), to model hourly inundation frequency at each of the sampled plots. The inundation frequency was then used as a predictor variable in the CART analysis and regression analysis. This study found that the main factor contributing to species richness was elevation. Vegetation assemblages at high elevations generally had high diversity, and assemblages at low elevations had lower diversity. Elevation and inundation frequency are inversely related, and the strong correlation between species richness and elevation also assumes that inundation frequency is important in structuring the marsh. Burn frequencies had no influence on diversity in general, but more frequent burning did result in monospecific stands of Spartina patens at Anahuac NWR.

Fatigue Behavior and Microstructure of Direct Laser Deposited Inconel 718 Alloy

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Fatigue Behavior and Microstructure of Direct Laser Deposited Inconel 718 Alloy
Inconel 718 is a nickel-based superalloy with a series of superior properties, such as high strength, creep-resistance, and corrosion-resistance. Additive manufacturing (AM) is appealing to Inconel 718 because of its near-net-shape production capability to circumvent poor machinability. However, AM parts are prone to detrimental porosity, reducing their fatigue resistance. Thus, further understanding of AM fatigue behavior is required before widespread industrial use. The microstructural and fatigue properties of heat treated AM Inconel 718, produced using Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENSTM), are evaluated at room and elevated temperatures. Fully reversed, strain-controlled fatigue tests were performed on cylindrical specimens at strain amplitudes of 0.001 to 0.01 mm/mm. Fracture surfaces were inspected using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Heat treatment caused initial dendritic microstructure to mostly re-form into an equiaxed grain structure. AM specimens experienced reduced fatigue life in testing as compared to wrought material due to inclusions or pores near the surface.

This is Also the City
The Conservative party ruled Colombia from 1886 to 1930. During this period, a coterie of grammarians, poets, and theologians consolidated political power by appealing to literature as a form of rhetorical expertise. The Liberal party took power in 1930 and would hold it until 1946. Recent scholarship has argued that during this period Liberal intellectuals defended the political authority of literary expertise even as they endorsed a modernizing program. Although these charges of hypocrisy are well founded, they tell a limited version of the history of the so-called Liberal Republic, failing to take into full account the work of intellectuals at the edges of the Liberal party’s patronage network. This dissertation considers a series of writer-journalists—including Luis Vidales, Luis Tejada, José Antonio Osorio Lizarazo, José Joaquín Jiménez, and Arnoldo Palacios—who were active in Bogotá between 1920 and 1950. It examines their essays, chronicles, novels, and poems in newspapers and magazines, and less often in books, to argue that they elaborated a new function for literature in Colombia, appealing to the genres of urban journalism and the emerging discipline of urban sociology in order to transform literature into a form of social investigation.

Addressing Discontinuous Root-finding for Subsequent Differentiability in Machine Learning, Inverse Problems, and Control

Addressing Discontinuous Root-finding for Subsequent Differentiability in Machine Learning, Inverse Problems, and Control
There are many physical processes that have inherent discontinuities in their mathematical formulations. This thesis is motivated by the specific case of collisions between two rigid or deformable bodies and the intrinsic nature of that discontinuity. The impulse response to a collision is discontinuous with the lack of any response when no collision occurs, which causes difficulties for numerical approaches that require differentiability which are typical in machine learning, inverse problems, and control. We theoretically and numerically demonstrate that the derivative of the collision time with respect to the parameters becomes infinite as one approaches the barrier separating colliding from not colliding, and use lifting to complexify the solution space so that solutions on the other side of the barrier are directly attainable as precise values. Subsequently, we mollify the barrier posed by the unbounded derivatives, so that one can tunnel back and forth in a smooth and reliable fashion facilitating the use of standard numerical approaches. Moreover, we illustrate that standard approaches fail in numerous ways mostly due to a lack of understanding of the mathematical nature of the problem (e.g. typical backpropagation utilizes many rules of differentiation, but ignores L'Hopital's rule).

Module-level Power Converters for Parallel Connected Photovoltaic Arrays

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Module-level Power Converters for Parallel Connected Photovoltaic Arrays
"A new solar technology with the capability to increase array-level power production is introduced by using simple integrated power converters that connect directly to photovoltaic (PV) panels is investigated. The power converters proposed here are full-bridge DC-DC converters with high voltage gain that operate with an open-loop control scheme. The outputs of these converters could then be directly connected to a grid-tie converter eliminating the need to connect panels in series to achieve the appropriate voltage. With a high-efficiency converter, the total system efficiency would increase even though one panel in the array may be compromised. The simulation results show that a highly-efficient converter is possible. To assist in experimentation, an auxilary [sic] circuit using a microcontroller was implemented to supply power and gate signals to the gate driver of the power converters. The design and construction of a transformer for use with the full-bridge converter is discussed. A novel transformer topology is utilized to increase converter efficiency. The converters were tested both in a laboratory environment and outdoors for solar data collection. Transient response, source regulation and load regulation analysis was performed. The maximum power points of the array were investigated for different insolation levels. Even when insolation differs substantially, the panel output power levels are within their individual maximum power levels when the total output is maximized even without independent power trackers. Analysis of both field data and random insolation indicate that the new approach does increase power generation and therefore system efficiency"--Abstract, leaf iii

Essays on the Tall Building and the City

Essays on the Tall Building and the City
"The tall building is barely a century old, but it has transformed older cities and shaped new settlements around the world. In Asia and the Middle East, a forest of high rises has risen in the space of a generation, from bare ground or in place of humble villages. Behind the seeming chaos of tangled roads and unrelated buildings, is an underlying order and a hierarchy of scale that every city aspires to. Unlike some smaller works of architecture, tall buildings contain highly technical systems which are replicated and costly. These buildings have the capability of generating significant financial return and there is a global community of real estate investors constantly surveying potentially beneficial locations around the world. While the uniformity of this global industrial sector might suggest uniform outcomes, the regions in which opportunities exist are varied, each with its own history, governance and economic marketplace. It is this dialectic between universal sameness and regional distinction which provides the narrative for this book and informs our observation of the important similarities and differences of tall buildings in our world cities."--Publisher's website.

Narrative and Form in Dvo\v R\'ak's Symphonic Poems Based on the Folk Poetry of Karel Jarom\'\i R Erben

Narrative and Form in Dvo\v R\'ak's Symphonic Poems Based on the Folk Poetry of Karel Jarom\'\i R Erben
Czech composer Antonin Dvorak's last orchestral works were five symphonic poems written in the years 1896-97, following his return from a sojourn in the United States. All but the last of these works, The Hero's Song, were inspired by poetry of the Czech poet Karel Jaromir Erben. Dvorak's settings--The Water Goblin, The Noon Witch, The Golden Spinning Wheel, and The Wild Dove--are unique within the genre largely because they portray the narrative elements of their source texts with much greater specificity than symphonic poems by other composers. Details of plot such as sound effects depicting specific events and themes associated with individual characters are meticulously represented. The music also expresses actual dialogue in the source poems, through the use of speech-melody, or melody that bears the characteristic rhythms of the Czech poetry because they were originally composed as direct settings of lines from the text. Narrative-musical connections are not limited to surface elements, however; they also play a part in the larger structure of the music. Whereas key relationships are most often linked to elements of the narrative, the thematic organization and sectional divisions derive from traditional instrumental forms--usually sonata- or rondo-like arrangements. Poems that are episodic, for example, are represented by the alternating sectional scheme of the rondo. Each large form also contains within it smaller local constructions such as ternary forms. Often these smaller units relate to more detailed events in the narrative. A remarkable characteristic of Dvorak's forms is the occasional overlapping or hybridization of more than one form in a single work. Sonata form, for example, may be combined with elements of the multi-movement sonata cycle (The Noon Witch), or a linear narrative treatment may also contain elements of a rondo with numerous ternary substructures (The Golden Spinning Wheel). Detailed analyses of these pieces reveal the various interrelationships of narrative and form, and help to explain their unique place within the symphonic poem genre.

Do Changes in the SG&A Ratio Provide Information about in Future Earnings, Analyst Forecast Revisions, and Stock Returns?

Do Changes in the SG&A Ratio Provide Information about in Future Earnings, Analyst Forecast Revisions, and Stock Returns?
In fundamental analysis, increases in the ratio of selling, general and administrative (SG&A) costs to sales (SG&A ratio) are viewed as negative signals about future firm performance. However, this interpretation focuses on the overall change in the SG&A ratio and ignores the underlying changes in the components of the ratio. For example, prior literature finds that the interpretation offered by fundamental analysis does not hold during periods of decreasing sales. I contend that a further partitioning of the full sample into subsamples representing all possible combinations of changes in the components of the SG&A ratio, and the ratio itself, will yield incremental information about future firm performance. Accordingly, I identify six subsamples representing these combinations of changes and examine whether they are incrementally informative about future earnings, analyst forecasts, and stock returns. I find that changes in the SG&A ratio in four of my six subsamples are associated with changes in future earnings, and that results from prior literature regarding periods of decreasing sales are driven by a specific set of circumstances. I also find that analysts do not always recognize the information in the signals and incorporate the information into their forecast revisions. Finally, I find that changes in the SG&A ratio in five of my six subsamples provide statistically significant information regarding future stock returns that is not subsumed by the information contained in forecast revisions.
