Learning from Las Vegas, facsimile edition

release date: Sep 22, 2017
Learning from Las Vegas, facsimile edition
A fascimile edition of the long-out-of-print large-format edition designed by design icon Muriel Cooper. Upon its publication by the MIT Press in 1972, Learning from Las Vegas was immediately influential and controversial. The authors made an argument that was revolutionary for its time—that the billboards and casinos of Las Vegas were worthy of architectural attention—and offered a challenge for contemporary architects obsessed with the heroic and monumental. The physical book itself, designed by MIT''s iconic designer Muriel Cooper, was hailed as a masterpiece of modernist design, but the book''s design struck the authors as too monumental for a text that praised the ugly and ordinary over the heroic and monumental. The MIT Press published a revised version in 1977—a modest paperback that the authors felt was more in keeping with the argument of the book—and the original Cooper-designed book fell out of print and became a highly sought-after collectors'' item; it now sells for thousands of dollars in the rare book market, while the author-redesigned paperback has remained continuously in print at a price affordable to students. Now, decades after the original hardcover edition sold out, the MIT Press is publishing a facsimile edition of the original large-format Cooper-designed edition of Learning from Las Vegas, complete with translucent glassine wrap. This edition also features a spirited preface by Denise Scott Brown, looking back on the creation of the book and explaining her and Robert Venturi''s reservations about the original design. Learning from Las Vegas begins with the Las Vegas Strip and proceeds to "Ugly and Ordinary Architecture, or the Decorated Shed," on symbolism in architecture and the iconography of urban sprawl. As Scott Brown says in her introduction, the book “upended sacred cows … would not bad-mouth bad taste, and redefined architectural research.”

The Riddle of Jael

release date: Feb 27, 2018
The Riddle of Jael
Winner of the 2019 SECAC Award for Excellence in Scholarly Research and Publication In The Riddle of Jael, Peter Scott Brown offers the first history of the Biblical heroine Jael in medieval and Renaissance art. Jael, who betrayed and killed the tyrant Sisera in the Book of Judges by hammering a tent peg through his brain as he slept under her care, was a blessed murderess and an especially fertile moral paradox in the art of the early modern period. Jael’s representations offer insights into key religious, intellectual, and social developments in late medieval and early modern society. They reflect the influence on art of exegesis, the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, humanism and moral philosophy, misogyny and the battle of the sexes, the emergence of syphilis, and the Renaissance ideal of the artist.

The Definitive Guide to Grails 2

release date: Feb 03, 2013
The Definitive Guide to Grails 2
Grails is a full stack framework which aims to greatly simplify the task of building serious web applications for the JVM. The concepts within Grails, like interceptors, tag libs, and Groovy Server Pages (GSP), make those in the Java community feel right at home. Grails’ foundation is on solid open source technologies such as Spring, Hibernate, and SiteMesh, which gives it even more potential in the Java space: Spring provides powerful inversion of control and MVC, Hibernate brings a stable, mature object relational mapping technology with the ability to integrate with legacy systems, and SiteMesh handles flexible layout control and page decoration. Grails complements these with additional features that take advantage of the coding–by–convention paradigm such as dynamic tag libraries, Grails object relational mapping, Groovy Server Pages, and scaffolding. Graeme Rocher, Grails lead and founder, and Jeff Brown bring you completely up–to–date with their authoritative and fully comprehensive guide to the Grails 2 framework. You’ll get to know all the core features, services, and Grails extensions via plug–ins, and understand the roles that Groovy and Grails are playing in the changing Web.

Power, Perception and Foreign Policymaking

release date: Nov 13, 2017
Power, Perception and Foreign Policymaking
This book examines the changing dynamics of power in the international arena since the end of the Cold War. Brown engages in analysis of how the United States and the European Union have responded to the so-called rise of China through an examination of how policymakers’ perceptions of China have changed over time and influenced their policy choices. This study undertakes rigorous analysis of how these perceptions have evolved between 1989 and 20092016, offering a comparative perspective on the similarities and differences between the policy discourse and behaviour within these two Western powers. Brown argues that ‘China’s rise’ is a contested notion, with varied perceptions of how the implications of China’s ascendancy have shaped policy preferences in ways that are inconsistent with concerns over the threat of an impending power-transition. Combining concepts and methods derived from IR and FPA, the book examines the linkages between great power politics and policymakers’ competing interpretations of key international actors, and their influence upon foreign policies. The main objective of the study is to illuminate the different ways in which the US and the EU have responded to the rise of China through a close analysis of their decision-making processes and outcomes across a series of key encounters and events, including the transatlantic debate over the EU’s proposal to lift its China arms embargo (2003-2005). Undertaking qualitative analysis of the development of American and European policymakers’ perceptions of China, this book will be of interest to graduates and scholars of post-Cold War international politics, Foreign Policy Analysis, policymaking, US-China relations and EU-China relations.

The Last Rejection

The Last Rejection
"You remember a girl we knew back in high school named Linda Brown?" he asked solemnly. "Hmm, if I remember correctly, we used to hang out with her quite a few times." I replied. My connection to Linda was deeper than that. We were high school sweethearts. We dated through most of high school, eventually breaking up our senior year. I never wanted to end our relationship, but she did. It''s hard when you are young. "Yes, well, she''s been murdered." Scott said. There was a long pause while I tried to recover from the massive amount of shock I was experiencing. It was kind of like getting hit in the stomach with a bowling ball, only the wind hadn''t been knocked out of me. I had not seen her in many years and yet I felt so sad as if we had kept touch since we graduated. "What happened?" I asked almost in a whisper."I don''t have time to go over the details. I''m faxing you my report on this caseas we speak. I''m also going to arrange a flight for you. I want you to help me."Scott said. The fax was just coming in. "You want me to fly out there? What use would I be?" I asked. "I''ll explain when you get here, if the FBI will fit the bill. Sorry, I can''t talk anymore. I hope to see you soon. Bye." Scott said then hung up.

Pediatric Physical Diagnosis for Nurses

Pediatric Physical Diagnosis for Nurses
At first glance, the idea of teaching nurses the essentials of physical diagnosis may seem new and perhaps controversial. In 1965, when the authors were students in one of the first Pediatric Nurse Practitioner programs at the University of Colorado, the idea of nurses using stethoscopes, otoscopes, and other instruments traditionally assigned to the physician was heralded with a great deal of skepticism. This book provides a detailed guide for the nurse learning the skills of physical diagnosis. It is designed to help any nurse interested in improving her skills of physical assessment. Each chapter of the book is divided into a discussion of why an examination of a portion of the body is important, a review of the anatomy, a description of the method to be used in the examination, a description of the instruments to be used, and some discussion of conditions of which the nurse should be aware when examining that particular portion of the body. - Preface.

A View from the Campidoglio

A View from the Campidoglio
These seventeen essays span thirty-two years in the careers of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown. In these careers one can see the inextricable blending of the building of buildings and the building of words. They "look, analyze, synthesize through writing, synthesize through design, then look again." Robert Venturi''s Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, published in 1966, has been acknowledged as the most important thinking and writing on architecture since Le Corbusier. It provided a theoretical base for architects to transform architectural design from Modern to contemporary. A leading exponent of the Postmodern, the firm of Venturi, Rauch and Scott Brown has been in the forefront of new approaches in architecture and design, combining traditional with modern. And their writing has been viewed as "brilliant and liberating." Paul Goldberger, in The New York Times, says of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown: "They merge a kind of childlike delight with an adult''s ironic sensibility, bringing to architecture an attitude not altogether different from that which Lewis Carroll brought to literature." -- from book cover.
