Longshore Spatial and Temporal Variabilities in Cape Cod National Seashore

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Longshore Spatial and Temporal Variabilities in Cape Cod National Seashore
Beach and dune systems are dynamic environments where changes occur from season to season due to a continual influx of energy from waves, currents, and winds. For coasts to best be managed, and to protect or preserve valuable natural and economic resources, the process-form relationship between beach and dune systems needs to be better understood. It is, therefore, necessary to look at these features at a variety of spatial and scalar resolutions. Throughout history, the relationship between both systems have been found to act coincidentally with one another, but somehow the interaction has rarely been looked at. This exploratory research investigates the different methodologies that are used to obtain and monitor coastal changes in the alongshore variation of the shoreline and duneline to try and find the most accurate approaches in terms of sample length/location and optimal transect spacing interval. This study focuses on two different sized zones (3.89km and 6.4km long) in the Province Lands Dunes area of Cape Cod National Seashore. Both areas are characterized by beach segments backed by a line of foredunes. GIS, DSAS and remotely sensed data sources are used to quantify and describe both shoreline and duneline changes based off of orthoimagery from 2001-2012 time periods. To analyze the data from DSAS, visual and statistical analyses are completed and compared to one another to answer the proposed research questions.

Stand Dynamics of a Unique Pygmy Forest, El Malpais National Monument, New Mexico, U.S.A.

release date: Jan 01, 2015
Stand Dynamics of a Unique Pygmy Forest, El Malpais National Monument, New Mexico, U.S.A.
The pygmy forest is a rare ecosystem found on the 3000-year-old McCarty''s basalt flow in El Malpais National Monument, New Mexico. The forest is dominated by contorted, shortstatured forms of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Douglas ex C. Lawson) and piñyon pine (Pinus edulis Engelm.). The purpose of this research was to investigate the history of this unique forest and attempt to isolate reasons why the trees grow in such peculiar forms. We first used tree-ring patterns from 32 ponderosa pines growing on a sandstone kipuka located within the McCarty''s flow as a proxy for past precipitation, and used this to identify linkages between climate and tree establishment. We collected 286 cores in seven plots in the pygmy forest to analyze species composition, age distribution, and establishment dates, and also tallied seedlings and saplings to project the future forest composition. Climate response analyses revealed that tree growth responds positively to precipitation during the pre-monsoonal months of January through May. The pines are sensitive to drought years, and we found three major drought episodes since the early 1800s. We found that the oldest trees in the pygmy forest were junipers aged at least 400 years, and that no forest likely existed until approximately A.D. 1600. The forest is regenerating mostly with Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii Nutt.) and piñyon pine. We found only 10 seedlings of ponderosa pine. Disturbance features observed on the trees, such as lightning scars, dead leaders, and "stagheaded" shapes in the crown, indicated that the peculiar growth forms of the pygmy trees are likely the result of dieback from one or more lightning strikes and new apical dominance from branches of the tree. Lightning storms are known to occur more often over the dark basalt than over the surrounding sandstone areas, and the McCarty''s flow may have properties that enhance convectional uplift and increase storm activity.

Call Me Evil, Let Me Go

Call Me Evil, Let Me Go
Sarah had lived in fear for over a decade. Humiliated, ostracised and brainwashed, her spirit had been crushed. But as the realisation of what she was subjecting her children to began to sink in, she found new strength and determination - the strength to try to escape the world that had consumed her for so long. Sarah was never a troublesome child. She smoked and drank a bit when she was underage, and shoplifted once, but she was generally well-behaved and didn''t mean to upset her mum and dad. But Sarah''s parents had seen first hand what could happen when a teenager went off the rails. Scared the same would happen to Sarah, they sent her away, many miles from home, to a church school that would put a stop to her bad behaviour. They had no idea they were sending Sarah to a place where she would be forced into obedience - a place that sanctioned force-feeding and beating in order to smash a child''s will. They had no idea she would end up marrying a boy from the cult, and cutting the rest of her family out of her life. Or that she would begin to treat her own children in the same way - believing there was no other option, and that everyone in the outside world was evil. But she did. And the day they sent Sarah away to the little church school miles from home was the last time they saw their real daughter for over a decade. Until one day when Sarah found the courage to fight back, the strength to protect her children and bravely venture into the world she believed was full of evil. This is Sarah''s story - the shocking but ultimately inspiring true story of her struggle to save her children from the suffering she was forced to endure.

Where the Sidewalk Ends

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Where the Sidewalk Ends
In 2005, 54.4 million people in the United States reported some degree of disability. For many of these people - particularly the 13.5 million Americans who use wheelchairs, canes, crutches, or walkers - the issue of sidewalk accessibility is not merely one of convenience, but of civil rights and public safety. Faced with public sidewalks that are impassable due to disrepair, physical obstacles, or an absence of curb ramps, many individuals with disabilities are forced to choose between remaining housebound or traveling in the streets, posing a danger both to themselves and to drivers. However, as disability activists push for greater accessibility, cities point to the significant expense of upgrading thousands of miles of sidewalk. How to best handle the deterioration of public sidewalks has become a topic of debate between disability advocates and cities grappling with severe budget constraints. Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides that "no qualified individual with a disability shall, by reason of such disability, be excluded from participation in or be denied the benefits of the services, programs, or activities of a public entity, or be subjected to discrimination by any such entity." This Note examines the circuit split regarding whether public sidewalks can be considered "services, programs, or activities" within the meaning of Title II such that plaintiffs have a private right of action under the ADA to force cities to insure that public sidewalks are accessible to the disabled. This Note argues that the statutory text, legislative history, implementing regulations, and agency interpretation of those implementing regulations support the conclusion that public sidewalks constitute "services, programs, or activities" under Title II of the ADA.
