Jeweled Splendors of the Art Deco Era

release date: Apr 11, 2017
Jeweled Splendors of the Art Deco Era
A visual celebration of jeweled masterworks from Paris in the Art Deco era One Christmas Eve, Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan gave his wife, Princess Catherine, an exquisite jeweled box made by Cartier in the 1920s, thus starting the most magnificent collection of objects created in the Art Deco era by jewelers, at a time when the jeweler’s art was at the height of beauty and creativity. In the 1920s, rapid changes in society and technology were rejected in art through striking contrasts of line, color, and material. The innovative luxuries in this book—breathtaking bejeweled vanity and cigarette cases, timepieces, jewelry, and a photograph frame—take their inspiration from varied sources, including the natural world, exotic locations, and industrial design. Chinese dragons, Persian birds, and Japanese plum blossoms appear on boxes created with an explosion of colored gemstones and enamel juxtaposed with boxes in black, white, and gold stripped of excessive ornamentation. The exuberance of the boldest pieces contrasts with the starkly elegant machine-inspired designs, but both are equally considered and iconic of this era of excitement, change, and creativity. Smoky nightclubs, with flappers drinking cocktails, and exotically decorated apartments, resplendent for chic dinner parties, provided a new landscape for the designs of the great jewelry houses of Europe and America, with Paris as the undisputed center. In Jeweled Splendors of the Art Deco Era, published to coincide with an exhibition at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Museum, New York., expert authors explore the development of this new artistic world by considering the exotic influences of the important jewelers—including Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, Boucheron, Lacloche Freres, and, above all, Cartier—as well as the process of design and making, and the impact of changing femininity. Well over 100 pieces are accompanied by detailed descriptions and were specially photographed for this publication by the renowned photographer Doug Rosa. This collection from the most important period in the history of jewelry and the decorative arts is unsurpassed in quality and is beautifully shown here with a wealth of context and detail.

Stories from the Stacks
INTRODUCTION by Julianne Tillis - For one to see a galaxy firsthand, look no further than your library. Thousands of universes housed within the walls of a single building. Miraculous, is it not? Libraries present us the opportunity to travel through time and space and have experiences one could only dream of, simply by picking a book from the shelves. The atmosphere of the library has its own allure - its history, its mystery, its limitless wisdom. A library can have many tales of its own to tell, if only we listen carefully. Within these pages, you will find libraries of all varieties - those from a distant past, a recognizable present, and even a possible future. The libraries serve as the framework for these stories - tales of romance, intrigue, death, destruction, and adventure - and they will transport you among the stacks to share in their stories. The Wicked Wordsmiths of the West have an affinity for libraries, as that is where we began our own story. Our group of ambitious writers met four years ago in the meeting room of a branch of the Cabell County Public Library in West Virginia to participate in National Novel Writing Month. Afterwards, we called ourselves Wicked Wordsmiths of the West, and we''ve been meeting at the library ever since. Our first anthology, Wicked Words, was published in October 2014, and includes an assortment of spooky tales from the horror genre. In Stories from the Stacks, libraries are explored as settings that are mystical, dark, enlightening, seductive, and even sometimes frightening. And if you look hard enough, you may even find a familiar thread that serves as homage to our own Cabell County Public Library. Enjoy, and never forget the wonders your local library can offer you. Examining Officers' Physical Fitness Needs in University Campus Police Departments

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Examining Officers' Physical Fitness Needs in University Campus Police Departments
Abstract: Law enforcement officers have a unique job description. Long periods of sedentary behavior are intermixed with moments of required physical exertion. The purpose of this study was to assess the need of a regulated exercise training program, the effect of the motivational environment of a workout facility, and the need for incentives to benefit law enforcement officers'' health and physical fitness levels. Participants included 76 (62 male) active law enforcement officers employed by a university in the Big XII conference. Measures included a fifty-four item questionnaire including demographic information, specific health and exercise questions and questions concerning specific incentives to increase exercise adherence. The Commitment to Exercise Scale and the Perceived Motivational Climate in Exercise Questionnaire are two previously validated surveys that were also used. University police departments were contacted via email and asked for their willingness to participate. Upon agreement an email was sent containing the link to the online Qualtrics survey. The survey was available for one month. Descriptive statistics were calculated for the Commitment to Exercise Scale and the Perceived Motivational Climate Scale. Demographics and total responses for health and exercise questions also were examined using descriptive statistics. Frequencies were calculated for gender, individual health information and individual exercise information. Results found the average BMI was 29.43 which is classified as overweight. The most common health symptom was high blood pressure. The majority (51.4%) spent 3-5 days per week participating in exercise. Police officers in the Big XII perceive the climate within their fitness facility as ego-involving which involves individuals being motivated by extrinsic factors as opposed to the desirable intrinsic motivators. Incentives that are important to this population include the ability to earn time off or being promoted. These results are important because it is apparent that the current fitness regimens being performed are not successful in decreasing health complications. This population, which is at a greater risk for cardiovascular disease and is involved with a known stressful occupation, will benefit from participating in a regulated physical fitness regimen.

Learning Disabilities in the Foreign Language Classroom

Learning Disabilities in the Foreign Language Classroom
The purpose of this report is to inform foreign language (FL) educators about students with learning disabilities (LD) so that instruction can better serve their needs. It applies this to Spanish FL education in the United States, examining reading performance due to the role of reading in academic success and the prevalence of reading LD. The report outlines reading models and the cognitive processes within these approaches to explain how students read. With this understanding, the report examines LD, focusing on the role of phonemic awareness in L1 and FL reading. It analyzes reading instruction in English and Spanish in order to evaluate existing FL strategies and propose new interventions. From this report, educators should gain an understanding of how LD in reading impacts FL and how reading could be better addressed in the Spanish FL classroom.

Evaluation of Behavioural Skills Training with Volunteers Teaching Motor Skills to Individuals with Developmental Disabilities

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Evaluation of Behavioural Skills Training with Volunteers Teaching Motor Skills to Individuals with Developmental Disabilities
Reaching early motor milestones is essential for positive growth and development. Individuals with developmental disabilities may fail to reach these milestones due to gross and fine motor impairments. However, very few physical education programs address motor development issues that may be a concern for individuals with developmental disabilities. The Special Needs Activity Program at Brock University capitalizes on university student volunteers to support individuals with developmental disabilities in developing motor skills. Evaluating various methods to train these volunteers may positively impact training outcomes, and save valuable time and resources. This research employed a mixed methods evaluation to evaluate volunteer training through: (1) a component analysis of behavioural skills training for teaching volunteers how to also use this methodology to support individuals with developmental disabilities in a movement program; and (2) a thematic analysis of the volunteers'' experiences and approaches to teaching this population. The component analysis results were variable across participants; however, following all training phases, all volunteers met a predetermined performance criterion. Through a qualitative analysis five themes in the volunteers'' approach to teaching individuals with developmental disabilities were identified: individualization, respect, collaboration, flexibility, and commitment. Strengths and limitations of this evaluation are discussed and recommendations for future research are provided.
