Beware tall buildings. Always have your knives. Raised in isolation by her mother and Maeve on a small island off the coast of a post-apocalyptic Ireland, Orpen’s life has revolved around training to fight a threat she’s never seen. More and more she feels the call of the mainland, and the prospect of finding other survivors. But that is where danger lies, too, in the form of the flesh-eating menace known as the skrake. Then disaster strikes. Alone, pushing an unconscious Maeve in a wheelbarrow, Orpen decides her last hope is abandoning the safety of the island and journeying across the country to reach the legendary banshees, the rumored all-female fighting force that battles the skrake. But the skrake are not the only threat... Sarah Davis-Goff''s Last Ones Left Alive is a brilliantly original imagining of a young woman''s journey to discover her true identity.

An Exploratory Study on the Leadership Development of Seasonal Staff at Camp

release date: Jan 01, 2017
An Exploratory Study on the Leadership Development of Seasonal Staff at Camp
Often, emerging adults spend their summers working in the camp environment. While efforts have been made to understand the camper experience, research regarding the growth and development lacks, especially as it concerns leadership. This study uses data gathered by Ribbe and Cyrus in their exploratory study, "Exploring the Impact of Summer Camp Employment on Camp Staff." In this study, 236 camp staff between the ages of 18 - 24 completed the Leadership Practices Inventory by Kouzes and Posner. This study seeks to explore the following: (1) the impact of Christian summer camp employment on leadership development of emerging adult staff and (2) what aspects of staff training, supervision, and care are correlated with positive growth in leadership. The data showed that emerging adults do grow in leadership ability from the beginning to the end of their summer spent working in the camp employment. Although camp cannot be claimed as the cause of this positive change in leadership, Pearson Correlation tests reveal that there is a connection between aspects of staff training, support, and supervision and what the Leadership Practices Inventory measures.

Young with the Twentieth Century

release date: Jan 01, 2007
Young with the Twentieth Century
The tales in Sarah Davis Pearson''s charming book offer an informal history of a great American Age. In retelling the stories members of a Wisconsin family told one another between the Civil and Second World Wars, she touches on the changes in life and customs during that century. Although meticulous research enhanced her memory, the author admits that, being family, not every one of the principals involved would agree with her account of every episode. Many of the stories are humorous. Others illustrate rapid advances in science, communication, and transportation and the effects of massive European immigration to the United States. In essence, this memoir is an affectionate recollection of growing up in a close and lively family during days long gone.
